Flying the choppers!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I finally bit the bullet yesterday and bought Arma 2. Got it all patched up and I'm looking forward to getting my teeth sunk into it.

Anyway, I've been doing the flying training for the choppers continually,specifically the transport training. I just cannot seem to quite get the hang of putting the chopper into a hover and bringing it down properly. I've crashed loads of times and even crashed a few times while trying to bring it down with auto hover on.

For the transport training, I fly on over, and then pull the nose up to slow the chopper down, but even trying to do this gradually, the chopper appears to go to a halt but then begins drifting backwards and to the side. It can be quite frustrating. I'm wondering, should I be decreasing the thrust to bring the chopper down to the ground and then pull the nose back to try and control it better?

I can fly the jets easier...but have crashed them a few times too :) The flying mechanics are certainly different from BF2 that's for sure. Alot more sensitive.

Cheers guys!!

Decreasing thrust is integral to landing.

Auto-hover is for girls.

haha perhaps :) But even then it can be tricky to try and hold the chopper steady above the ground and I actually ended up drifting into the side of a tree.

I'm guessing i'll just have to keep on trying until I get used to the flying mechanics....hopefully there shouldn't be any flying involved too soon into the game campaign :S

The next step will then be practicing proper attack runs in a chopper :bounce3:

Hi Sisko

You obviously missed this thread:

Also Read this:

As others have pointed out the best way to train is SP in the editor. Even when they think they are good the really good pilots train in the editor near everyday just to maintain their skills.

Kind Regards walker

Here's an idea, practice hovering just 1-3 meters above the ground without auto hover for a prolonged duration of time. Nothing else just a low hover. If you can maintain a stable hover that low, increase your height to 100m and bring yourself back down to land. When you are at 15m or less, decrease your rate of descent (throttle up, but not enough to start rising again). With a Seahawk you can put your nose up a bit to touch down with the landing gear on the back first and then let the front come down on it's own.

It just takes practice, practice, practice. Some get it right away, others it takes time. If you have a joystick handy, it'll make things much easier (for me it did at least) than trying to use a keyboard and mouse. Always watch your speed and alt, and if you can see them, use the instruments on your dash if you must (again IF you can see them, as shadows sometimes make them hard to see clearly during the day). They come in handy for me as I still have troubles hovering close to uneven terrain, so often I chose to ignore most of what I see out the window and look at the panel instead.

And me cause I'm lazy. I like Autohover and got used to it until they put in analog throttle into the game and haven't practiced.

Do these shoes match this outfit?

Auto-hover is for men.

Men = lazy

Auto hover = lazy

Men = Auto hover

Oh and Having a joystick with TrackIR makes you a much better pilot.
