AI accuracy

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Is there a way to reduce the laser like accuracy of the AI insurgents? I'm often popped off before I can even get a bead on one of the bad guys, I don't mind a challenge but somtimes it borders on the ridiculous (I'm playing on regular).

Basically I'm hankering after a fire firefight that lasts a bit longer - more like the footage of real life contacts with poorly trained insurgents spraying off rounds willy nilly.

Any idea on how to do this guys?

Thanks in advance!

go to game options and difficulty and reduce the AI skill level. If you want more control open your arma 2 profile file in notepad and set parameters for precision and skill.

Who would want to reduce it? I've got it on expert and I like it.

Takko you are my hero - good for you and enjoy your arma experience. :)

Barely injured - thanks for your help - I will have a look at that file you mention in notepad. Had it on veteran and was getting anhilated - putting it to regular has made the bad guys pause a little longer before opening up its just their laser like precision that was getting unbearable.

Thanks again.

Hey skimbo,

That the AI has laser-like precision is a myth that's been around for ages. Even though they aim worse in ArmA2 than they did in ArmA1 (in which they aimed worse than in OFP) this myth is as alive as ever. When people complain that they get shot 200-300 meters away, they fail to realise that they themselves are quite accurate at the same range.

Instead try to not getting pinpointed at all. That's the easiest way of not getting shot. Always be on the move, use cover, and try to attract as little attention as possible. There's so many factors that you have to consider when you play ArmA 2 you don't realise half of them are there, because most other FPS games don't bother to include them. And that's what keeps you attracted to the game, and makes you fall in love with it over and over again.

Hope I don't sound like a prick that is trying to teach you how to play the game 'properly'. Just trying to be helpful. :)

Hi skimbo72

ArmA is a bit tough; here have a read there are several links:

http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/ArmA_II_Hints_and_Tips

See particularly the bits about cover and concealment, then look at battle drills and follow the links to Dslyecxi's ArmA II Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures Guide.

As dmakatra points out you have been trained by all other FPS that you are some uber soldier. They were to be brutaly honnest conning you by telling you what you wanted to hear. It is First Person Ego Strokers. Almost everything you learned from every other FPS you played was just plane wrong.

ArmA is a simulation.

You have a four week hump to get over untill you become better at playing sorry just the way it is.

Good luck! Hope to see you playing on line with the rest of us if you make it through the hump.

Kind Regards walker

Great post bud, I agree 100%. Took me a few weeks to get good/decent at ARMA2.

Yeah, the learning curve is pretty steep but you know I usually play with three of my friends and sometimes we just want to kill crowds of people... Most of the times we are faced with more than a couple of squads, we get our asses handed to us.

Which is perfectly realistic, I admit it and I respect it, but I too would like the enemies to be a bit more movie-like and the firefights to last longer. For fun's sake!

Well, if you just want to have a little fun with your friends, I guess you can make an addon with has a new config in which a few selected weapon have huge disperse values.

Just alter the enemyprecision values for certain difficulty levels. Then you can pick and choose at will!

You might be able to mod the game to be more like that, but I think you should also consider just playing a different game when you want to have an unrealistic movie-like experience. Not trying to be rude, but it's just like if you want to play a realistic flight sim you don't pick up Arma - you play something designed to give you that experience.

Going around in a small squad killing "crowds of people" is just not what the game is designed for - in addition to having to make the AI really really stupid in order for you to have a chance against those kinds of odds, you'll have problems with running out of ammunition. These can solved with scripting and careful mission design but it's probably easier just to play a game that's designed to give you that kind of gameplay experience. There's nothing that says your group has to pick one game and only one game. When you and your friends feel like playing a serious tactical shooter, Arma will still be there.

Well, you can set the AI skill way down... but for a movie like experience maybe play a movie like game?

Thanks for the replies all.

I'm not after a movie style experience with ARMA - its just I wanted to put the enemies accuracy down as I considered them (not cannon fodder!) but poorly trained with little experience at shooting weapons let alone in combat.

I know for a fact that if someone handed me an AK and asked me to shoot at well trained USMC units I would 'wig out' when it came to pulling the trigger and send bullets everywhere because:

(a) I would be shit scared

(b) I've never fired an assault rifle

© did I mention I would be shit scared? :)

I love op flash/arma series and I have owned every game since it first came out but like dmakatra and walker said I guess I'm still to used to my 'uber' ness from playing other recent fps.

Thanks again for the help/info all!

Agree here - for me the only niggle with ARMA(2) firefights is that fear is not really modelled, i.e. it has no bearing on accuracy, which means enemy fire is just a bit too precise and not as chaotic as it would be in a real engagement, i.e. they see you, they shoot you, thats it.

I have lowered the accuracy of the ai to try and reflect this 'fear', however in an ideal game, perhaps the initial exchanges should be wild and chaotic, but as the firefight continues the combatants grow more confident that their cover is good and their fire should become more precise.... not really possible to model this for AI I guess....not yet anyway ;)

Even professional armies put fire down in the general direction of the enemy before taking cover and taking more aimed shots. Enemy accuracy should be a lot more dynamic and customisable.
