Russian tanks

Recommended Posts

Not directly ArmA related and just out of curiosity:

What do the T72 (and other Russian tanks?) carry in these round barrels at the back?

If I'm thinking of the same barrels you mean, I believe it's fuel. :)

If you set the fuel to below 50% I think it is the barrels go away. The percentage might be lower and I can't guarentee that works on all tanks.

I thought so too - and actually I just found a picture on this site where the fuel barrels are labelled "fuel barrels" ;)

I just thought it would be very dangerous for infantry to be close to such barrels during a firefight. Then again, diesel is not explosive and being close to a tank in a battle might be dangerous anyway.

In real life, the fuel barrels can be jettisoned whenever the crew thinks there might be some danger. As Atrocious noted, diesel isn't highly flammable anyway--but some of the other Russian/Soviet/Ex-Warsaw Pact tanks not in the game could be using gasoline, jet fuel, or kerosene.

Hi Atrocious

As others said they are Drop Tanks. Same principle as on combat aircraft since WWII.

The fuel in the barrels refuels the main gastank until they are empty or they are ejected on expectation of battle.

Kind Regards walker

I thought they might be for fuel, but got confused because they weren't red. ;)

Take the BMP series of IFVs....the crew sit on benches positioned on top of a central fuel tank. The rear doors are also fuel tanks. Only a couple of 12.7mm API in the right place could take them out.

In reality the fuel tanks on the T-xx MBT are the least of your worries (as you say it's generally diesel), ammo is stored in the turret and crew compartment and is quite susceptible to being hit.

Also tanks tend to be DPU and missile magnets :)

Yeah that's what I meant. Being close to a tank when a TOW hits it, is probably not funny. ;)

Fuel distance of russian "T-90С" (T-90S) is about 550 km on good road, and +200 km with extarnal fuel tanks.

Compare this with M1A2's 450 km's......

Yeah, but you can put pretty much anything into M1A2...jet fuel, petrol, diesel, yoghurt :D

T-90 is diesel only...besides you are unlikely to advance more than 50 clicks in a day w/o some kind of operational pause/resupply.

US Army's 3rd ID 150 km thrust in OIF was the farthest armored advance in a day in history. (Can't remember which date exactly, but I think it was on the third day of the campaign).

Yes but you need tons of them... It consumes twice as much jet fuel than the F-18 or twice as much diesel than the T-90. About the yoghurt I'm not sure, I can't find a suitable correspondent... :D

Bottom line is that fuel consumption is one of the main disadvantages of the M1A1. It might not be a problem now but in an total war those long fragile supply lines will be a handicap for the US Army.

Er...Kosovo Airport?

What about it? As I remember, it was the Russians who dropped a full regiment of airborne troops there.

Besides, the Serbians agreed to withdraw from Kosovo following the air campaing, NATO was unopposed in ground maneuver.
