Arma2 is a very CPU-dependant game. (As well as GPU also) My AMD Phenom II X3 720 overclocked to 3.5 GHz and overclocked AMD/ATi Radeon 4890 (900\4400 MHz) aren't enough for this game to run on maximum settings, and today there are no CPU and GPU that can run this game on maximum settings smoothly. The same situation was when OFP and Armed Assault came out... So... You can try 2.7 GHz'ed K8 CPU... but I'd rather you bought a K10.5-generation-CPU from AMD, if you like AMD.

(P.S. Phenom II X3 720 is 2.8GHz at stock, and game is playable even without overclocking it, supposing that you have a hi-end videocard.)

No, i got the 2,2ghz version and i wouldnt even recommend a 2,7ghz version of it for ArmA2. Its just not worth it.

If your going to get a Athlon get what I have and thats in my sig ... 3 gig dual + or then step to quad, dont bother with anything less. If you check the troubleshooting section search for "athlon" theres a dedicated thread with much feedback of dual althon users.

Im playing it pretty well here but even I would go to quad in time for the more AI intensive moments, but its seems than Athlons 6000+ onward is best.

As regards "will it work" .... the answer would be "yes" ..... and then .... "but not so well with AI intensive moments and slightly busy campaign moments" ... simple fact is, go for 3 gig dual + or straight to quad.

I don't actually know what that means

And all I want is a "yes it will run" or "no it won't".

Sorry to be a noob, but I just wanna get the parts ordered :(

EDIT: I should mention I'm on a fairly tight budget.

.

Will they fit into an AM2+ Socket?

Yes mine is AM2+ socket :)

Ignore some other posts "Best" and "What you can afford" are the reality of these things. Id say on a budget try to get what I have or more if you can get a good deal (not sure what you can afford but quad would be "ideal"), and also crank the graphics card, im running on mainly high settings, with not as much show stopping FPS (im happy) and ive removed stuttering too.

My mobo is Asus m2n-sli deluxe.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 2.7GHz is not enough for this game, IMHO.

AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8GHz 3 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Black Processor - Retail - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103649 ($119) - that CPU I told about. It is a choice for a money (not expensive, but quite fast and overclockable to 3.5-3.8 GHz, depends on luck, MoBo and other factors). In multicore applications it will be faster than dualcores at the same clock speed.

P.S. it can work in AM2+ sockets.

P.P.S. if your Motherboard has "Supports 140W CPU" label, than you will be able to get a good overclock with it.

3.99 Ghz i7 should do the trick.

Happy gaming :)

even this, with four HD4890's in case, won't show minimum 60fps at maximum settings.

It WILL work. But you won't be happy. I tried running it on my second computer which I use for my ARMA2 server and it has an Athlon 64 X2 4200. The computer also has an old Geforce video card something like a 6200. The game starts and plays. But with everything on LOW, it still lags like hell.

Being that this game benefits from a strong CPU and utilizes Multi-Core technology. I'd strongly recommend going to a higher level CPU. If you can't afford a higher end CPU. I would suggest going with the original ARMA. Same great game with tons of addons. But with a lower system requirement.

And with a tight budget. You're better off banking that money and adding to it until you get enough for a larger CPU and possibly system upgrade. but that time, the game will be a lot more stable and you'll have yourself a better rig to enjoy the game with all it's glory. ;)

I found this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AMD-Athlon-64-x2-6000-3-1GHz-CPU-Brisbane-Heatsink-NEW_W0QQitemZ120461592921QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Motherboards_CPUs?hash=item1c0c120959&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

I'm going to get it, I think, and whilst you lot tell me yes or no, I'm going to go and call my gran for a loan. :j:

If I get that, am I looking at stable playability?

I can live happily off noodles for a few weeks/2 months. I just want to get a PC up and running that can handle ArmA 2 as this laptop is on its last legs.

well it depends, but yeah i still go to 20s but very very smooth 20s, which is the point, and i do have lots of 60s average, and even hit 100s, it all depends on the area/mission.Also i never use PP or go over 2500VD. 3.8/4.0 i7, 4870x2's ,1792/1344 90hz

I advice against the whole x2 series. Better wait until you can afford something better.

Seconded. It's not worth the money because it will still lag. The Phenom for AM2(+) sockets really isn't that expensive on ebay.

If you still can't afford it, sell your body for one night. You know, ArmA II is worth it! :D

I sympathize with building a computer on a very tight budget. What you choose depends on the bottlenecks in your other hardware--what's the maximum wattage your cpu socket supports? What power supply unit do you use? What's your ram and GPU?

It also depends on what you consider acceptable gameplay settings and frames per second. If you can live with around 25 fps on the lower end of medium setting, then you might do well enough with a Phenom 9600 or 9700 coupled with a decent GPU.

I have a Phenom 8400 (overclocked at 2.2), 3 gigs ram, and a 9800gtx+. Not the CPU or GPU I would have picked, but I got them for free so I can't complain. I was worried that the slow CPU would really kill me with Arma 2, but I get around 25 fps with mostly default medium settings in most scenarios outside of the large capitol city. FPS goes down to the teens in Chernarus with a lot of other players/AI, and starts to stutter if I'm flying a jet low to the ground with a 3500m viewdistance. Otherwise, it's playable for me. I think what saves me is the third core, because it sure isn't the crappy clockspeed of my CPU.

I think in Arma 2 a triple or quad core will generally do better than a faster clocked dual core.
