Does the distant sound delay only apply to explosions?

Recommended Posts

I made a mission in the editor and sat back and watched it unfold, basically it waas an attack on Stary from the perspective of a hidden US 'Spotter' and i noticed that whilst the delay on the explosion sounds reaching me was cool, and is an awesome feature, the sounds of the machine gun fire coming from the Russian vehicles and ground troops was instant no matter how far away they were. I don't know if this is a bug, intended for some reason or simply local to my install of A2. So i'd like to know if everyone has the same 'issue' and if so can it be patched. It's a bit of an imersion killer but i understand that it's hardly a priority patch-wise.

Yeah, I noticed that too. I believe it's in the bug tracker, but I can't seem to find it at the moment..

Hey, at least this way you can dodge incoming sniper fire! :D

this is my favourite bug, snipers in PvP get completely hosed when they take a shot at me and i maneuver before the bullet reaches me, invalidating any lead they had on me. i'll be sad to see it gone.

usually bullet sounds seem instant, but i've been shot and even killed before i heard the gunfire before. I think it's just a design flaw. But over most distances you will see the gunfire before you hear it.

Speed of bullet is quicker than speed of sound. So it would make sense if you get shot before hearing the gunfire.

Yep, it's definitely not the case on Arma2, only explosions sounds are delayed with distance.. that sucks.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the bullet sound is a property of the ammo used. Right? If correct: That would explain why bullet sounds travel faster (the bullet is moving) than explosion sounds (the explosion is stationary).

Maybe, but the muzzle bang sound - the sound produced by the weapon itself should take time before it reaches our ears.

I wasn't talking about how bullets/sound behave in the real world. I was making an assumption on how they are being simulated in the game. I've never made a weapon addon, though. Does the muzzle give off a sound in ArmA2, or is it (as I suspect) only the bullet used that triggers the corresponding sound file?

hmm, if that's true. Then the game simulates quite poor in this area. I mean, how would one explains how bullet sound travels faster than explosion sound? Sound only travel at one speed (hence speed of sound).

But at the end of the day, it is better for you to fire before your enemy does :) teh you won't have to worry about the sound.

No, not true at all. I haven't really noticed whether this is true in ArmA 2 but In OFP all sounds definately behaved realistically in terms of speed of sound/distance... including gunshots.

I'm kind of lazy to start Arma2 right now but judging the new beta patch changelog it's fixed "?".

Haven't got time to test it yet but according to the notes for the beta patch it is indeed fixed:)

[58729] Fixed: Simulate speed of sound

[58727] Fixed: fire from rifle distort sound

Nice work BIS.

AK's still go thump-crack instead of crack-thump, so I don't think the patch fixed it. I wonder how difficult it would be to mod a sound delay into every report?

It sort of works, you hear the round hitting the object first (in the case of my testing, me :p ), then you hear the gun going off, then the crack of the round breaking the sound barrier.

Works fine for me, that's awful saturated sound every burst I shoot has also vanished, it's already much better than 1.03 patch. :)

If a passing round makes a sonic boom, what is the whining sound I hear on occasion? Is it a spent round that has passed below supersonic speed?
