Fat hummer

Recommended Posts

Ok, i always thought that the Hummer seemed a little to tough, so i decided to test my theory.

I put both an empty Hummer and an empty Hind on a field, then proceeded to blast away with them with an M16.

The results?

The Hummer (shots fired at engine from straight ahead): 285 shots, give or take some.

The Hind (Shots fired at armoured section ofcrewcompartment): 304 shots, give or take some.

Now tell me, is this really reasonable? I´m no expert at choppers but isn´t the Hind supposed to be REALLY heavily armoured? It should be able to withstand some serious punishment... Or is the Hummer overpowered?

Some other vehicles taking part in this test:

Trabant: 3 shots. Pathetic... tounge.gif

Jeep: 58 shots.

UAZ: 60 shots.

BDMR: 90 shots. This one surprised me the most. The BDMR is classed by the game as an armoured vehicle, and yet the Hummer, being classified as a car takes 3 times more damage? Very dissapointing.

Anyway, that´s about it... If you have some data on damage values, feel free to reply.

(Note: The above tests are in no way precise. I did shoot all vehicles in more or less the same spot though.)

Yep, the Hummer in OFP is definitely overarmoured, especially when compared to the BRDM......but the fact that it comes close to the Hind?!? wow.gif .BIS you gotta fix this!

Why do people always just assume that the hummer should be just like an armored jeep?

I'm no hummer expert, but I do believe that hummers are pretty tough. They are much more than just "tough jeeps" The military also uses hummers as attack vehicles equiped with machine guns, radars, missiles on the roof, completely underwater submersible, and all sorts of other features, hummers were built to withstand damage. Built tough. They can act as a small lightly armored tank or even a forward base. Too bad these features are not implemented in OFP.

The HmmWv family consists of lots of Hummer configurations, but in 1985, most of them were not invented.

In 1985 we should be stuck with the M998 and M1043.

These HMMWV variants have only supplementa armour, and are no way that tough as in OFP.

The M1109 and M1114 HMMWVs are an Up-Armored Armament Carrier configuration of the HMMWV family. The vehicles are equipped with additional armor both on the sides and underneath to protect the crew from small arms ammunition and mines.( and did not exist even in the 90's)

I had a fat hummer once. Had to get rid of her though. Didn't want my friends seeing me with her around town. But now that I'm older I have to say whether she's a fat or thin it really doesn't matter. YOU R STILL GETTING A HUMMER! tounge.gif

Ok I'm no expert on Humvee's or BRDM-2's myself, but even by looking at these two, which one do you think looks tougher?

brdm-2-ntc.jpg

hmmwv-dvic368.jpg

I mean really....does the BRDM-2 even look like it could be scratched by an M-16?

I found this quote:

"The BRDM-2 series, with maximum armor of 14 mm, can be penetrated by artillery fragments and .50 caliber machine gun fire"

Ok, sounds reasonable right? but 3 M-16 clips? dream on!

Yeah, BIS should put some thought in the vehicle specs before rushing them for release. In first patch that contained Humvee addon it could be destroyed with singe bullet to the tires and driver would automatically eject after that smile.gif

Now it seems that Humvee is a bit over-armored when compared to BRDM. HMMW is an armored car while BRDM is more like an APC like BTR, M113 etc.

I also beg BIS to add BTR-80 into OFP since it can carry full squad of troops. Also top-mounted 12.7mm M2

for Humvee is needed, equally useful would be turreted version of BRDM with mighty 14.5mm heavy machinegun is desperately needed!

the OFP hummer has ridiculous armoured glass too.. it seems the windows will absorb a outragouse amount of damage. i believe the hummer armour upgrades in real life only consist of kevlar inserts for the body panels.

I know that the armored IDF hummers here have withstood major roadside detonations, protecting their crews. Besides the "glass" (it's better than glass) being about 2 inches thick, the rest of the passenger cabin is armored with heavy plates - don't know if it's steel or otherwise.

No matter. OFP's in 1985 and should take the reality of that time into consideration.

If I remeber correctly, its (the cabin) some sort of laminated kevlar and glasses might be polycarbonate. Which would make sense, 'cause hummer wheigs "only" about 2 tonnes. If cabin would be steel plate armored, it would probably wheigh about 4-8 tonnes, just my speculations.

If someone has exact knowledge, feel free to point them to me. confused.gif

dont need to change th hummer armor because the hind has the strongest armor and unbreakable glass while the hummer is only a car and not many people use it anyway

so that means the apache is like the brdm and the hind is like the hummer

that meaNS the hind has tough armor and so does the hummer

and the apache has good armor like the brdm

Kinda. Haven´t tried the Apaches resiliance yet.

But anyway, does anyone have both the stats of a BDMR-2 and the Hummer (both from 1985) so we could compare?

FAS.org says that the BRDM2 has 10mm armor on the front of the turret and nothing else really... getting armor specs and main gun specs for military vehicles can really be a bitch sometimes, and i dont feel like go hunting.
