Jocktamson 10 Posted August 6, 2009 I think a way to rappel from the chopper would be a nice touch to enhance the realism in game
Kramxel 10 Posted August 6, 2009 Sounds like a great idea!
Quiet Blue Jay 10 Posted August 6, 2009 I don't believe Marines rappel from helicopters, however I could be wrong.
Goldline 0 Posted August 7, 2009 They do in 24 season 4 when the secretary of defense is captured by a terrorist group.
TechnoTerrorist303 10 Posted August 7, 2009 It's been done. Check out the "fastrope" addon.
Big Dawg KS 6 Posted August 7, 2009 They do in 24 season 4 when the secretary of defense is captured by a terrorist group. Of course, that's proof enough.

Big Dawg KS 6 Posted August 7, 2009 IMO rappelling from aircraft has become so cliché...
Daniel 0 Posted August 7, 2009 They'd have to train for it though if they intended to do so in battle. Seen some nasty videos of accidents during rappelling. @Kyle, know what you mean. But if you've got a human pilot and a human squad, it's still looks smart, good way to start a mission.
kocrachon 2 Posted August 7, 2009 All forces in the US Military train and use fast roping. While not the most conventional use of insertion in the Iraq war, do to fear of RPGs and so forth, it is still common practice and is in use. Most often it is used in Urban combat situations, when there is no sufficient location to land in an area of operation. Black Hawk Down is a great example of when to use Fast Roping. When you want to land near a specific building with no landing point in a near by and you need to move fast. However, for the most part in Iraq and Afghanistan its not typical because A) Not a lot of airborne insertions into hot zones or combat zones aside from CSARs and Medivacs, B) the missions we have taken part in, in the las 2-3 years of Iraq, don't require such insertions, becuase its now more of a peace keeping missions. However, it is still a common practice and does have some use. Fast Roping is more of an early war use. You use it when entering a city with little present ground support. I love the fast rope add-on that currently exists, but id rather see it add 2 ropes rather than just 1. I was also disappointed how in ArmA 1 it was advertised on the box but was not in game. Big Dawg KS 6 Posted August 7, 2009 ...in ArmA 1 it was advertised on the box but was not in game. I was not aware of any such advertising... you have a different box than me?
kocrachon 2 Posted August 7, 2009 I must, because when you opened the flap on the ArmA box, it shows soldiers (well, not in game but the guys on the cover) are rappelling out of it, giving the idea that fast roping exists in game as well.
Big Dawg KS 6 Posted August 7, 2009 Lol, come now. You should never use box art as an indicator of the game's features. Look at BF2... has Apaches on the cover but no Apaches in game (not counting SF expansion). It's just supposed to look appealing....
kocrachon 2 Posted August 7, 2009 Yeah.. but its still misleading in the end... its still suppose to be advertising of the product...
cjsoques 0 Posted August 8, 2009 I know reading Black Hawk Down they used fast rope for insertion, it's a shame it isn't implemented in this game. Would have been an amazing feature...

walker 0 Posted August 8, 2009 Hi all I am a trained rock climbing instructor rappelling/abseiling is the most dangerous thing you do. When I worked at The Castle Climbing centre in London I had to do a 60m free abseil (not touching the wall straight down the middle of the castle tower) twice a week, we would do the abseil first so the clients were not so frightened. We were always on a safety rope as well. It was rated as the most dangerous activity on the course other than tripping on the stairs or slipping on the floor, or being run over in the car park ;) I have also abseiled without a safety line 60m down a sea cliff as last person in; last 20m was free abseil as the cliff was undercut. Every time I do an abseil I know I am taking a risk. One of the 7 climbers I know who have died was killed on an abseil in the Alps. Abseiling off a single bolt at the top and it pulled. Kind Regards walker
Morten87 10 Posted August 19, 2009 (edited) First off, Nice Work. Second off, i have some suggestions. 1. Is it possible to make the rope more "real", like when you drope it, it falls more gentely. 2. Is it possible to shoot of the rope? 3. The feature should be done by a co-pilot or a team leader, and it shoulde take longer time to pull up. Mabye it shoulde be seen like some one is actually pulling the rope back in the chopper, not like it just pops right in to the chopper? Something like this.
