Please help! Tank/APC commander

Recommended Posts

Hi all

When commanding tanks/apc's Is there any way to have the commanders sights/view operate independently of the turret?

What I mean by this is when my gunner starts swinging the turret like crazy the commanders view/sight moves with the turret instead of staying where I was looking.

I dont know much about real life commander positions but its very disorientating and makes it damn near impossible to spot/target enemy vehicles infantry.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Regards

Skimbo

It is super annoying. The M1A2 and the T90 don't have this problem though. I think it's because they are newer tanks, and they have stabilised commander sights? I thought the M1A1 would as well, but I really don't know much about tanks. Anyone else? Maybe they'll fix it in the next patch.

Yes, its bloodly annoying and I mentioned it in another thread.

kju: that link doesn't seem to work.

I hope its changed in game rather than having to use yet another script.

Ditto.

A station lock would be nice...as would a TC over-ride.

You can take control of the turret & gunner by using the "watch there" command :

- press F2 (gunner) then Alt, choose a direction, then press the middle mouse button

(or if you only have a single tank crew under your command, you can simply press the space bar, instead of F2, and it will select the whole crew)

This command helps a bit to prevent sudden turret rotations.

don't mean to hijack this thread but this was the only one existed where i could post my question without the need of creating a new one. When i'm the commander, i use the CTR+F to switch to sabot then designate a target for my AI gunner, the AI turns the turret toward the target but never fires! unless i press CTR+LMB or choose manual fire which would take me away from my job being a commander and find other targets or engage other enemy targets, what am i missing here?

Also on the M1A1 the loader should be able to turn in and, ofcourse, load different ammo

turnout or switch to gunner seat

Turning out will get you killed real fast. Also switching to the gunner seat eliminates the commander position completely.

Im confused, you mean unless you give the order to fire he wont fire? Thats the way its supposed to be and has been since Operation Flashpoint. You may be able to set a "fire at will" command on your gunner crew and then give him a target. He may fire automatically now, I dont know? I havent experimented with it very much.

Thanks Crazy, you got it, but i was hoping he would fire once i designated a target for him. Waiting for me to tell him to fire diminishes AI, i may as well be the gunner and do the whole thing on my own! i already tried the engage at will and open fire to no avail.

If I remember correctly, at least for U.S. tank crews, the gunner isn't allowed to fire without the commander explicitly ordering it. It may sound stupid, but it helps to avoid fratricide and other issues.

Sure, I mean one could argue, if the gunner can fire whenever he wants -whats the point of a commander...

you shouldnt CQB'ing that tank then

judging by this topic it seems the commander position is useless anyway so might as will jump into gunner seat.

Eh, I do it and generally survive, as long as it's a Thunder Run and not just sitting there chillin', waiting for someone cite me for "Loitering in an urban area" with an RPG.

It has radar and a optic that isn't like viewing the world through a soda straw.

I can't believe this was overlooked in development. I never had a problem keeping the commander's view on the target in ARMA 1, so why should the newer version go backward. I'm getting more and more frustrated with this release.
