modemmaik 53 Posted July 23, 2009 Gnat;1376950']Rockets points are very valid' date=' amazing they did it, and I hope very much no low-life distributed a ripped BI model, but they did it once and I really hope they'd do it again.EDIT: Just thinking, in many cases if they ripped out the first few resolution LODs to protect themselves a bit .... that would likely still be useful. .[/quote'] Why ripping... as stated before: The ODOL format is no protected format (in other words: crypted), it is just a binary format. All values (config, model) are included, only not ASCII-formated... So there is no protection of 3'rd party content in your released addons...
granQ 293 Posted July 23, 2009 yeah addon/expansion pack should be a engine upgrader, otherwise people wont really pay unless the reviews are really good. Personally I found QG very weak, I liked the new uniforms and technicals, but didnt like the new forced loading screens. Which is why I uninstalled. but thats a bit off topic (even if i keep the thread on first page so dont mind).

I believe it goes against part of the EULA, but I'm not entirely sure. While they might not be physically encrypted, they are still protected under the EULA. So anyone with a little programing experience could very easily "un-binarize" any odol model file, BIS and User models alike ?! Shyt .... I thought it was a little tougher than that :/ Well ...... are my models protected under the same EULA ? ... probably not.
DaSquade 0 Posted July 24, 2009 @Gnat: Fact is, that little programming falls afaik under reverse enginering (as you try to reverse something that isn't meant to be done)..and so that makes it an illegal action. But again correct me from wrong, i failed on my 'Uber-excited-self-proclaimed-Addons-Police-Officers' tests ;) , so correct me from wrong. -> Back OT. rocket 9 Posted July 25, 2009 I reviewed the ODOL format with the lead programmer on a previous project of mine. It's heavily compressed and optimized. While you might not call it encrypted, he didn't think it was straightforward at all to decompose it. As with any 3d format - yes, you can extract 3D vertex information from it. Possibly even UV data. But yeah, it looked like a reasonably major undertaking to me and not really worth someones while.
t_d 47 Posted July 25, 2009 Well it is quite doable and already done. Just some trouble with the namedSelections in Res and Shadow Lods that need to be resolved.
