A problem

Recommended Posts

Only yesterday i downloaded Arma2 from steam after purchasing it and i decided to have a quick look what the game was like. I loaded the game up and i found that the game was rather jerky and a bit laggy, so i decided to play about with the graphic settings to try and get this sorted. While adjusting the graphics the screen went black and came up with a message 'out of range', i couldnt even access the game from then on as that message was all i could see, i just tried to redownload the game and the same 'out of range' message popped up.

Any ideas on how to fix this? :confused:

That sounds like you have tried to acces a resolution that your monitor does not support. Go to your arma2 cfg file and enter a resolution that you know your monitor will support. this will then get you back in the game where you will be able to change it again if needs be.

To access the game again, just play in window mode (add -window at the end of the target line in the shortcut).

Your resolution is here :

Resolution_W=848
Resolution_H=480

and refresh rate here :

refresh=75

Haha sorry i though i could get away with that before someone posted. :D

One other thing i wanted to ask, is why the game is such a hog on gfx? I mean i have only just got my new PC around a week ago. PC specs are:

Quad Core Q8200 @ 2.33GHz

4 GB RAM

512mb 9400GT nvidia

The game is so laggy and jaggy its just stupid, i have changed the gfx, lowered everything i can, texture detail and such and still it runs so poorly. Any tips?

It's just your graphics card, did you buy a pre-build computer from some market? They usually only hype the multiple cores of processor and gigabytes of ram, but never speak about the graphics card that's currently the most expensive and meaningful piece in games. To be able to run all today's games maxed, you'll probably need to spend around 300-400$ to graphics card, if not more.

You could try overclocking but I wouldn't say there'd be much headroom or inprovement with your card, best bet is to save a little money and upgrade to at least a 4850 (preferably a 4870), you could go a 9800gt for a little less than a 4850 but the 9800 is such an old core now that you'd be losing out a lot more on performance per price.

85€ (120$) are absolutely sufficient. You never need the newest card for playing games. Ã'm always using the last generation that becomes very cheap whenever the new generation hits the market. (like HD3870 vs. HD 4870)

Hmm maybe its the only way to play to get a new gfx card. Redicious i think as the one i have now plays everything i play, call of duty 4 and such perfectly.

yeah, the beauty of COD4 is that it's so linear that it only renders 1/20th of what arma does (good ol' sneaky virtual worlds)

No its not. go have a look on this forum and Armaholics forum for some advice on how to get it to run smoother. I have a Q6600 and 2x 8800 320mb and if I can run it on normal/high setting after a week of tweaking, I'm sure you can too. Also buying the new and oh so awesome 200 series will only give you more headaches trying to play arma2 and bankrupt you.

In other words look at arma 2 forums troubleshooting sections and you should find a fix.

Good luck!

At some point soon you will need to upgrade your graphics card if you want to be able to play new games in high detail as they come out. 9400 is similar performance to the graphics in my laptop which plays many games very nicely but I wouldn't want to have it as my main rig. Look at it this way, you can save a little money when you can and in say 4-6 months time buy a reasonable card that will suddenly make your PC graphics a lot better and increase its overall "life" substantially. I have a gtx-260 in my machine which I upgraded to in January, I loved the sudden increase in perceived performance but I also have all the gtx-260 issues people have with Arma2. As has been suggested here, no point in upgrading just yet until the issues have been ironed out and it's clear what you can actually play the game on without wanting to defenestrate your PC every time you move the mouse. Stick with what you have now, wait for the patches to come and use that time to save... Just think, the longer the patches take the better the gfx card you can buy.

Got the game to play fairly smoothing by turning down the gfx memory to low. So at least i can play it. ;P

Yeah. Unfortunately as basic as it is, the 9400gt isn't a very good card. Running on low settings should allow play for the time being (and yes, gfx memory, even if your card is 512, if you're forcing all that memory to textures then your card is not going to have enough grunt for everything else due to bandwidth)

If you really enjoy the game and want to get the most out of it (and other games of recent release) then I'd suggest upgrading your video card. You can get a fairly good one cheap these days.

9800GT's are fairly cheap now days and they're basically a clone of the much fabled 8800GT, that said, they have an old core and for only slightly more you can get a 4850GT or a 4870GT.

Any which way, if you need anymore help on choice just let me know and I'll try help, and I'm sure everyone else on this forum will too.
