Big OFP fan now considering buying ArmA...

Hello All,

Unfortunately, it looks like I won't be able to play ArmA II in a reasonable fashion until I get a new rig, which won't be for a VERY VERY VERY long time.

The first ArmA looked quite good during the demo as I had crisp textures and decent framerates, but I didn't buy it at the time due to how buggy and under-featured it was (graphics are not everything to me) so...

Since I can now get ArmA, the Gold Edition for super cheap, is it worth the purchase with the mods that have been released for it, or am I better off reinstalling OFP with the mods that were beloved by me (like SLX)?

And, if the first ArmA is highly recommended, could anyone advise to me The Best mods that improve...

(1) AI behavior

(A) Use suppressing fire

(B) Lean around corners/edges and/or strafe

© Fight within structures soundly

(D) Rescue/administer first aid to comrades

(E) Replaces or enhances vocal interactions between

units during combat (for ALL sides)

(2) Ballistic properties

(A) Rounds penetrate believably

(B) Affected by wind

(3) General physics

I'm not looking for something super duper robust here, but certainly something that will address some of the silly things I saw in ArmA's demo, such as tanks driving ON TOP OF wooden road barrier posts instead of snapping them like toothpicks or driving them completely down into the ground.

*It might appear that I'm looking for a realism mod, and if all of the above fits the description, and you know of a good realism mod, then I'm all for your words of wisdom regarding it.

(4) Awesome "must play" missions where the player's involvement is as an infantryman.

(5) Awesome "must play" campaigns where the player's involvement is as an infantryman.

While I enjoy the other avatar aspects of OFP, my one true point of interest is infantry.

there are plenty af addons/mods out there to customize the game at your liking, surely they won't fit your expectations 100% but surely they will make Arma experience a step forward from what OFP was.

if you can get Arma at good prize i think it is worthy the pay out

I'm using ACE (Advanced Combat Environment) mostly in single player and I do recommend it, though it is able to screw some missions.

From the viewpoint of OFP ACE is a combination of WGL and ECP mod. Making the game more realistic.

If you don't like the stock ArmA sounds try HiFi Novus Aevum sound mod.

Sadly most of the custom single player experience does focus on mediocre special forces scenarios. Have a look for your self on this board or OFPEC.com

Why not to take a look at flashpoint.ru?You have to register(use altavista babelfish to translate whole pages)but there is many campaigns you can't find anywhere else.

Have you tried the ArmA II demo on your current computer? My bro had an older computer that struggled playing ArmA and was pleasantly surprised to find that the demo ran smootlhy on his old computer. But if you have and it was too slow, then yeah I recommend the ACE mod as well, although you REALLY appreciate the ACE mod playing multiplayer where certain features of realism become very much appreciated. But its great for single player games as well. ACE is the most popular mod right now but there are dozens of others (an even more individual addons) out there to have fun with.
