M-N-0N 0 Posted March 13, 2002 also i can remember max as a memory hogger ... and ifb ya ran outta mem it started to use virtual mem "Ya HDD space" one thing i hate about max .. tho i have not used max 4 so i dunno what it is like ... LW is minimal on crashes i have only had 2 lyester day ... that was cozz i hadnt rebootoed in several days and i had been modelling every day and i was doing a scene in the 250k area and mym system crashed the prog 2 times the 3rd time my system didnt wanna know about it hahaha and that crashed lol

That seems to be my biggest complaint with 3dsmax - Near constant crashing, atleast 2 times per hour Is lightwave less prone to crashes?<span id='postcolor'> 3Dsmax should really be used under a WinNT based os (Nt4, w2k, xp). I remember when I used Win98 and 3dsmax, it crashed all the time... After I changed to w2k I didnt have many crashes anymore, still a few, but rather rarely. Win95 based OS's have poor memory management and 3dsmax does _alot_ of constant memory allocation and deallocation so I would guess thats why it crashes so much in them. Guest Posted March 13, 2002 I changed texture sizes to match the bitmap and haven't had a crash for a good 5, 6 hours and I've been working on quite a high poly scene, over 150,000 polys (not for WinterMarch). Maybe that's sorted the problem =/ I hope so.

M-N-0N 0 Posted March 13, 2002 Rob you need to skinmesh the model ... and that means getting the model and laying it out flat ... not a pic of just the side and skinning ... but you pull evey face out till it is flat and you have todo it properly in milk to get the cords so it wraps the texter around the model properly .... i am not the guy to talk about how to mesh in milk ... i didmt get the chance tho i know abit about milk.. Guest Posted March 13, 2002 Yep I'm now 95% sure that setting the texture to be the same size as the bitmap has sorted my crash problem. I spent most the day modelling a spitfire and not one crash  Dawdler: I fear that sort of thing happening Want me to try opening it and exporting to a different format? Hobo Sniper 0 Posted March 13, 2002 But sometimes my 3DS crashes even w/o textures...
Slider131 0 Posted March 14, 2002 Dawdler, go into your 3dsmax/autoback folder and rename autobak#.bak to autobak#.max then you can reopen it in an uncorrupted state
Dawdler 0 Posted March 14, 2002 It is no problem, I dont need it anyway (Im not sure if I could find it on my harddrive). It was one of the first scenes I made, a nice landarea with water and a few trees and a nice village, with a man infront looking at it all. Guess it would have been best to not add a huge numbered meshsmooth to them all The tree looked nice though, kind of like stick with a lump of jelly on top, so thick in mesh view, it looked like a solid tree
