Force Floating Zone

Recommended Posts

Hello!

A while ago, I checked around the forums to see if it was a possibility to force-enable floating zones on a server in ArmA1. Unfortunately, this didn't seem to be possible - that is why I am now suggesting it for ArmA2.

When disabling crosshairs, restricting your floating zone will greatly enhance your reaction time which is especially vital in CQB. This gives players who favour the more difficult floating zone setting an unfair disadvantage compared to those that turn it off.

I'm all for turning off the floating zone, the more options you have over your own gaming the better. However, since this is a control setting rather than a server-sided difficulty setting like crosshairs at the moment, the effect is that players like myself who really enjoy the floating zone is forced to turn if off in order to play on equal terms to those that shut it off.

I reckon this to be a serious problem, since I can't enable one of the best features in the game. What I want is for BIS to incorporate a "force floating zone"-setting under the difficulty settings so that it can be forced by the server. It can be turned off by default, I don't mind, as long as it is there to turn on if needed.

It shouldn't be too hard to incorporate even now in the last hectic months of development, should it? smile_o.gif

Why force the floating zone on?Its a personal gameplay setting like sensitivity. If you think that this is a disadvantage turn it off.

Exactly !!

Why Floating zone ?

Its NOTHING to do with "realism".

Crosshairs maybe, 3rd person, ..... but not floating zone.

That would make it harder to find the "right" server.

If there only was a hotkey for the floating zone, I would use it a lot more...  whistle.gif

[EDIT]

...and separate sliders for X and Y axes.

If the floating zone and aiming in general were less jerky and inaccurate, turning it off wouldn't even be necessary. I constantly feel like the reticle moves 2 times more than I wanted and I moved my mouse as little as I could. Pixel perfect aiming would be a blessing to the game. Instead we have a grid-like feel that makes your aim snap to a predetermined direction.

Like all arcade shooters ?

[EDIT]

When I think of it, maybe "pixel perfect aiming" would be great for the floating zone, until you reach that "movement zone".

Indeed most unrealistic shooters have a more fluent mouse aim when it comes to pointing your reticle where you want it. What I want is that Armed Assault wouldn't skip pixels when I want to fix my aim as little as possible be it in sight mode or with floating zone.

Floating zone triggers motion sickness for some people, so I disagree.

I use a bit of floating zone myself as I like not having the screen move all the time, but I have no problem with people turning it off.

Also people with TrackIR will have it off as it only makes things awkward for them.

IMO turning off crosshairs doesn't make the game any more realistic anyway. Less accurate crosshairs without the centre point that we have in ArmA1 would be better.

I dont like floating zone. Tiny bit is realistic but when you aim through a scope left to right you need to move the upper body as well (just try with a broom or something). When you aim fast left to right you dont have your upperbody stiff. Not even if your inexperienced with weaopns. You move the body naturally. And its (to me) hard to use the floating zone as others stated. I miss my target a lot with it on as i cant correct the weapon with my muscles as in real life. Therefor (to me) leaving it off is best.

So please, no forcing that crap on. smile_o.gif

Alex

That's exactly right. It's easier to point a rifle to your desired direction in real life than in Armed Assault with no reticle. A reticle without the aiming bead would be the perfect compromise for realistic results as opposed to realistic visuals.

I don't know what drug people are on, but having a floating zone is a huge help with aiming, at least for me.

It's not crap !

Do you mean the center within the crosshair, or center as in center of the screen ?

The centre point within the crosshair that shows the exact spot where the rifle is pointing. While in real life you have an idea of where the rifle is pointing, as can be simulated by a crosshair, no way is it going to be as accurate as that dot depicts unless you are looking down the sights.

My intention with this thread was not to debate whether or not the floating zone is a good feature. Like I said, I'm all for the option to turn it off if the server decides not to force it. The more you can customize the game to your own tastes - the better.

What I am asking however, is for an optional setting on my privately owned server that can force the floating zone to be turned on. It's my own server, so I should be able to set whatever rules I want it to have - whether that means it only has one mission, runs 4000 obscure addons, has no crosshair or forces a floating zone.

If you don't like this, then you are free to play on any other server you'd like. I don't see people complaining about clan servers because they are locked and therefore limits the server you can play on. Or servers running addons because it makes "finding the right server harder".

Simply put, it's my server, and I should be able to do what I want with it. I'm not saying every server WILL use this feature, I'm just saying some servers might - should they want to.

It's a good suggestion and would even the field a bit in MP, depending on people's experience and preference with the FZ.

Personally, I love the floating zone. Makes MP and SP a bit more challenging since you need to be more aware of where your barrel is pointing before you turn that corner or lean out to give or return fire. I figure since my rifle isn't magically welded to my shoulder IRL, why should it be ingame?

I play large MP matches against similarly skilled people who use no floating zone, and still hold my own well; it's a matter of practice. Having no zone on makes me annoyed - feels like any other shooter.

No it doesn't trigger anything if it's made like in insurgency.

Be careful what you say, the socialists will take you to a crazy center.
