Two different prone speeds

Recommended Posts

Recently, I noticed that I cannot prone crawl at two different speeds.  Now, I recall being able to use two different prone speeds at some point in the past (definately while playing ArmA), but now I just cannot seem to figure out what I was doing at the time. crazy_o.gif

I happened to notice this over on the TrueGameplay thread, confirming my suspicion:

Quote[/b] ]TrueGameplay-Animation-MovementSpeed v1.0

-------------------------------

- Decreased "Slow" PRONE CRAWL by 10% / Increased "Fast" PRONE CRAWL by 5% (For greater difference between fast/slow crawl and for a slightly faster "fast" crawl).

I personally use a combination of "Move Forward" to for slower speed and add "Turbo" for faster speed and this works for me in almost all situations, except I cannot get two different speeds while prone!  I have done some experimentation with evasive, but to no avail.  No matter what I try (including vanilla, various mods, etc), I cannot get the two different prone speeds.

So the question is:

Is anyone out there capable of using two different prone speeds?  If so, how are your keys set up?  What mods are you running?

Thanks in advance! smile_o.gif

i think for swimming and crawling "turbo" actually slows the character down!! This is how i dont lose my breath while crawling or swimming...

I think with the default controls Shift slows things down.  I always had it set so that shift sped things up in OFP so I made it that way in ArmA too.  ck-claw's post confirms it is possible to use two prone speeds, as I recall from my own expereince a while back!

@ck-claw (or anyone else who has this two-prone-speed ability)

It's great to know it is indeed possible, but if it's not too much trouble, can you post your key setup for the related keys and let me know what mods you are running, so I can join the party? xmas_o.gif

(Like I say I thought I had exhausted all combos...)

Thanks!

Ah yeah sry!

What i do the minute i spawn/start a mission is double tap 'left shift'

So my default movement is slow, weapon raised.

Then when needs be eg move between cover a bit quicker i hold shift for a faster movement.

Which also applies to crawling.

Hope that helps  smile_o.gif

Walk or run toggle: "C".

Press C and your character will "walk". Slow movement while standing, swimming, crawling, crouching.

Thanks for the help here guys!

@ck-claw

Your idea sounds like it might work for me, so I'm about to try it first.  Couple more quick questions for you that may expidite getting this working on my system.

1. Do you use the default controls?  (btw- I got a crazy custom setup going on.)

2. Do you happen to know which exact control you have 'double tap left shift' set on?  (i.e. in the key controls setup?)  I don't recall the default key setup and I'd rather not have to reinstall ArmA to see the default setup again.

Many thanks! smile_o.gif

If you double tap shift it toggles between two modes for the normal forward key (W default)

Holding shift goes to the other mode as long as you hold it.

When you start its in normal mode, double tap it and it toggles to slower mode. I usualy keep it on this mode, and hold shift when I need to go faster.

And of course, on foot double tapping W sprints, faster than "normal".

In water or crawling, it all depends what mode you have it set on.

If holding shift makes you go slower, you're on normal, if holding it makes you go faster, you're on slow.

I finally got it all sorted out... mostly!

OK, now this gets rather complicated, but I'll go ahead and explain it anyway, just in case it can help anyone else out as well or perhaps enlighten anyone on how the ArmA controls work.

Here goes. Back when I was playing OFP, I always used the run key to run around and then additionally held down the shift key whenever I wanted to sprint. Life was good.

Fast forward to ArmA release. When I first fired up ArmA, I had a devil of a time getting a keyboard setup I was happy with. The problem was that I really liked my normally run, then hold shift to sprint, but ArmA did not come out of the box defaulted that way.

Instead, there were all these "evasive" keys. And they were all set up to "double-taps", which I really hated. I just wanted the smooth transition from run to sprint (by holding shift key). So, I kept trying to set "Evasive Forward" to the shift key to act as my run/sprint toggle. It worked to convert the run into a sprint, but then when letting off the shift key, the sprint would just keep going. confused_o.gif

I seem to recall trying the shift key as "Walk or Run Temporarily" but that really just transitions between walk and run. So now I was really stumped. crazy_o.gif

And then I discovered "Turbo". "Turbo" does just what the doctor ordered, transitions from run to sprint while you hold it down, and then back to run when you let off the shift. xmas_o.gif

The new problem at this point became that the animation transition from run to sprint was broken (no transition at all), but that's a different story, which ended up later when Shakra Chan (sp?) fixed some of the broken transitions, including that one. Now I am starting to understand why I was one of the only people bitching about the broken transitions: Most people apparently use the default controls! tounge2.gif

OK, back to the story here. So with "Turbo" discovered (and subsequently the broken run-sprint animation transition fixed), life was good again. I could now freely go from run to sprint by holding and letting go of the shift key. thumbs-up.gif

Except for one thing. Apparently, despite all the wonders of the shift key as "Turbo", it does NOT for some unknown reason modify the prone speed! Thus this post.

However, if once prone, you press the "Walk or Run Toggle" button once, the "Turbo" key magically works to switch between the sprint speeds. wow_o.gif

You just have to remember to press it again before standing back up.

Thanks for all the help ck-claw and everyone else getting this sorted. Just now seeing your great explanation there as I type this too Blazin!

p.s. So now I see how you all defaults people switch back and forth between slower (i.e. walk) and normal (i.e. run). But I've gotta ask, how do you people switch from run to sprint?!? By double-tapping the forward key? I always hated that option because you have to stop your guy to do it! (vs. use the shift key as turbo for a smooth transition between run and sprint.)

Here's my current setup after this learning experience:

Shift = "Turbo"

Alt = "Walk or Run Temporarily"

Caps Lock = "Walk or Run Toggle"

It really might be worth it for some of you who aren't using it already to check out "Turbo"... To each his own of course though!

Also, if BIS is reading this, please do not simplify your control options for ArmA2. I really do need that "Turbo" key!

Np matey! smile_o.gif

And yes i just double tap the 'W' key to sprint!

Yes it does break the animation as such(not smooth transition)but i only use it to run like fook and i know im safe to do so!

There maybe a better way to config it but thats just what im used to.

MadRussian try this (for infantry)

Shift Turbo

Caps Evasive forward

CTRL Walk

2x CTRL Toggle walk

AWSD movement

MB3 lean left (thumb button)

MB4 lean right (thumb button)

Q Prone toggle

E Lay down toggle

R Optics

F Fire mode

< Zoom in

Y Zoom out

X Pistol toggle

C Reload

V Gear

Space Action menu ok

Tab Hold breath

For LWIN I am still undecided. Maybe do evasive forward to it.

Feedback, comments and ideas very welcome.

For A2 I am hoping for:

2x shift - toggle turbo

Crawling is the same as walking / running. Depending on what you have it toggled to, fast or slow, dictates what holding the fast / slow key down does. If you have it toggled to walk, hold it to run. If you have it toggled to run, hold it to walk. Crawling is no different. If you have it toggled to walk and you crawl, you will crawl slow, hold the button to crawl fast. If you have it toggled to run and you crawl, you will crawl fast, hold to crawl slow.
