Bizarre resolution problems

Recommended Posts

Hi, I've recently got a copy of ARMA Gold (1.08) and set it to 1280x1024 pretty much instantly. Whilst having varying success with my frames per second, I really wanted much better performance.

So I lowered the resolution down to 1024x768 and for some reason I get absolutely no performance gain at all, even at 640x480 it stays the same.

Does anyone know the reason for this or a way of fixing it or am I alway going to be stuck with mediocre performance until the time I upgrade.

Any help is much appreciated.

Specs are as follows

Athlon XP 2400+

1gb Ram

Nvidia 7600GS w/whql 91.47 drivers

With those specs you will struggle to get any decent FPS at all.

Your graphics card is quite good, therefore lowering resolution helps little. What is limiting factor in your system in the CPU. To get better framerate, you may try lowering options which reduce the CPU load, like view distance.

With such an old CPU and not so good gfx card i´d never put resolution this high, except for screenshots. Im running AMD 2500+ & 7800 so i know the 'fight for FPS' rather good.

Keep it at 1024x768 and set everything to low-normal, and shadows off, that´s the main performance eater on old systems.

Viewdistance 1200 is enough to keep the CPU from getting bored.

And you really should use lowplants mod by kegetys.

That way im getting enjoyable 25-50 frames depending on location and number of involved AI (with AI´s being the main CPU killer).

Try Lowplants1.1 by Kegetys, i have a good graphics card but it still doesnt like the shadder effects applied on the flora.

If you are patched up to 1.09 (and you definetly should) you can delete the grass pbo after you install Lowplants (grass is fixed in 1.09b).

And yes, i believe the trees look prettier over distance using Lowplants smile_o.gif .

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I've got the 1.09b patch + Kegetys' Lowplants installed and have noticed a fair improvement.

Guess I'll just have to save for a few months and get a new PC.

Thanks again

Buy an AthlonXP 3200+, but check if it will be compatible with the mainbaord. That would help a lot, without investing much money. wink_o.gif

Thanks for the suggestion, I did a little looking around and came across somethign that might fit the bill perfectly.

It's an AMD Athlon 64 3700+ with a MSI K8T Neo2-F motherboard that supports AGP x8 and DDR 266, so i can basically just move my existing graphics card and ram over onto it.

I'm so pleased right now tounge2.gif

Sorry, but ... hell no!!

Go Intel! AMD just can´t keep up with performance lately.

E7500 has the best price to performance ratio atm.

I see no sense in updating outdated parts with other outdated parts biggrin_o.gif

edit: Some boards offer AGP & PCIe capability .. you might want to get one of those of you don´t wanna update your GFX card right now.

When an AthlonXP 2400+ is in use, it would be cheaper to upgrade to the XP 3200+.

And my outdated system can handle ArmA, and other games very well. No need to buy a new sys. only because it`s "outdated". wink_o.gif

I wasn´t questioning that .. otherwise i wouldn´t be sitting in front of a 7 years old PC right now wink_o.gif

What i said was: If he wants to spend money, he should spend it on proper parts! Not the same old shit that he got already again.

A new Mobo isn´t that pricy nowadays...

The mew stuff get`s outdated that fast, that an upgrade or new build of an PC can be very cheaper if you do it the next month.

Only to run ArmA there is no need for PCI-E video cards, or Multi-Core CPU`s that are not supported directly by ArmA.

My post was made in relation to that one.

The AthlonXP 3200+ would be cheap, but give an way better performance than the currently used AthlonXP 2400+. wink_o.gif

Yeah, i found a 3700+ 64/Mobo bundle that I can just transfer my current Ram and GCard over to for 70 quid. Pretty cheap and will keep me happy until I really need to upgrade.

Having a 1300Mhz high rating should help out a little I think and atleast stop the CPU bottlenecking the Graphics, which is what was happening.

Edit* It came!! So now instead of running with everything on very low, low or off. I have everything (except post process - low) on normal. Not exactly high but considering how good it looks now compared to how it did look, I'm more than pleased. Very smooth and the loading stuttering has disappeared aswell (eg when flying over Ortego or Corazol).
