malik22 0 Posted August 2, 2007 Hi guys Im new at this game and need some help with flight controls is fast forward usefull with planes? And how about gears up and down do I put gears up when im in the air or before lift off? how about flaps how does that work? Thx in Advance
StryDa 0 Posted August 2, 2007 If you mean fast forward time then not really unless you have to fly from one end of the island to the other and can't be bothered to fly at normal speed. The gears are the wheels so you have to gear up once you are off the ground. You can keep them down but they cause drag and the plane can't fly as fast. When your landing make sure you have then back down .
malik22 0 Posted August 2, 2007 Thx for the reply how about flaps? and I meant fastforward like the infantry key that makes me run fast.
Infam0us 10 Posted August 2, 2007 The fast forward key for the flaps does'nt make your plane go faster. Flaps afaik are used in take off, where they are lowered, and likewise raised on landing to give you more control in the air.
celery 8 Posted August 2, 2007 Lower your flaps when landing or taking off and raise flaps and gear when you are airborne. Flaps slow your plane down and bind it to the ground. As default you press Q or Z to control the engine power, there is no fast forward in aircraft. You can use the infantry movement keys for bigger moves and use the mouse for more precise moves. Flaps increase lift... TOP: You should use flaps when you are traveling slowly, like when you are taking off or landing. They will allow you to keep control of the airplane at speeds lower than 250 km/h, in the case of the a10. On real aircraft, the landing gear produce drag and slow down aircraft. The reason why landing gear are retractable in most cases now are because of this. I'm not sure it has the same effect in ArmA, but I'd just gear up anyways. Fast forward gives the aircraft full throttle all the time. ArmA has AI controlling the throttle on jets, and the fast forward / normal / slow down buttons basically tell the AI what your preference is. Fast forward is definitely useful in climbing, evasive maneuvers, and for setting up attacks. For strafing runs, though, it's best to be traveling a bit slower. malik22 0 Posted August 2, 2007 thx guys so is it flaps up or dpwn when flying?
NoRailgunner 0 Posted August 2, 2007 Just go and try it! During takeoff and landing, the flaps are extended rearward and downward from the trailing edge of the wings. This effectively alters the shape of the wing, allowing the wing to turn more air, and thus create more lift. The downside of this alteration is that the drag on the wings also increases, so the flaps are put away for the rest of the flight.
frederf 0 Posted August 2, 2007 thx guys so is it flaps up or dpwn when flying? Flaps increase lift at the expense of greater induced drag. Use them for landings, short-field takeoffs, and possibly some close air support flying. Other than that keep the flaps up, they WILL reduce your top speed. Cheers. Dynamax 0 Posted August 2, 2007 fast forward will give you an extra bit of speed when you hold it down, but its only usefull if your flying with keyboard and mouse, if your flying with a joystick thats has a throttle then you dont need it. also note that fast forward doesnt work too well in helicopters as it makes the nose dip. as for flaps, full flaps for landing, half flaps for takeoff, and no flaps for normal flight. you can use half flaps when attacking ground targets, which makes it easyer to keep the plane steady on target. Gears, up when flying and down when landing. dont know why someone would mention fast forward time since his question is about aircraft controlls.

When using a joystick with a throttle control, less than 50% throttle is slow down, 50% is speed control neutral, and more that 50% is fast forward. There is no direct throttle control for fixed wing aircraft in ArmA.
Sniper121 0 Posted August 5, 2007 Thx for the reply how about flaps? and I meant fastforward like the infantry key that makes me run fast. To make your troop sprint/run faster than normal, find Turbo in the Control Screen. Even though Fast Forward is a listed command, in my trial and error method, I found that Turbo made my soldier sprint. Of course, the longer he sprints, the heavier his breathing is when going to take a shot at the enemy. The other answers to your questions about gear and flaps are answered imho. When I'm driving, I hold down the left shift key while moving forward for a speed boost.
