charliereddog 9 Posted May 24, 2007 I've noticed that whenever you take hits in a vehicle, or inflict it on a vehicle, you can hear the beep beep beep of an alarm. Is this realistic? Surely the large explosion/bang bang of MG fire, or visual cues are enough to tell you that you've been hit? Anyone know how to turn it off?
Fekin-Detri 0 Posted May 24, 2007 I don't know how to turn it off, but it is the most stupid thing to be able to hear it beeping well above the actual explosion.
Spokesperson 0 Posted May 24, 2007 In ALL vehicles? In choppers it's very handy. Signals rotor engine failure. It's important to descent in order to get it going. Very handy beep.

Commando84 0 Posted May 24, 2007 i think its a firealarm of some sort. usually it hapens when you are about to get blasted and blown up
l mandrake 9 Posted May 24, 2007 I like the beep. It serves as compensation for the lack of tactile feedback you get in a computer game compared to real life. In OPF I sometimes didnt even notice when my vehicle was taking hits from cannon and small arms, the beep in ARMA helps me to know straight away, so IMO it is in fact more realistic. Admittedly a better solution would be a force feedback chair but in the meantime..... Same thing applies to the crosshair. Because of 2d to 3d translation issues with crosshair disabled you have very poor feeling for where your weapon is pointing when firing from the hip, which is not realistic - IMO it is actually MORE realistic to have crosshair on than off, although I admit it does make it too easy to hit targets at distance without aiming (but better that than completely missing an enemy soldier standing 3 metres in front of you )
charliereddog 9 Posted May 24, 2007 But it doesn't signify critical damage as far as I can see. I've had it happen, and still fly on, and it happen again so it's just bloody irritating. After all, we have a totally unrealistic armour bar top right of the screen, so why have two unrealistic systems? And, I've not tried EVERY vehicle. But you fire a couple of FFAR's near, but not on a BMP/T72 etc and you'll hear the alarm, much louder than the explosions as someone pointed out.
bravo 6 0 Posted May 24, 2007 yup, i must agree on this and it can bee seen in some videos already released. I think official videos aswell. It's really irritating and anoying.

Tankbuster 1744 Posted May 24, 2007 maybe the sound plays through some kind of headset the crew wear Maybe the beeping is covering up the swearing of the crew? OMFG We're hit, becomes beep beep beep beep.

frederf 0 Posted May 24, 2007 I like the auditory alarm feature in concept. The values need to be tweaked though as some helicopters "whoop" off at 1% damage when there's really no cause for alarm. The fact you can hear the warning beeps while not inside the vehicle is the most silly thing ever. I mean, just ridiculous. I think there should be a few sounds, one for tanks, one per each side BLUFOR/OPFOR, and even a warning tone when you get lit up by radar (Shilkas track targets using active radar) to actually help you survive. Wouldn't it be nice to actually hear "rrrzzt rrrzzt" warning buzzer that a Shilka is targeting you so you knew to duck your AH-1 behind cover?
Yoma 0 Posted May 24, 2007 The most stupid thing about that beeps is that here in Belgium the exact sound is made by trucks when they reverse. To warn pedestrians so they don't get splattered. So every time i hit a tank with some AT in Arma, my silly mind tells me to watch out for a reversing truck. I would gladly have it removed and instead have amplified damagetaking sounds corresponding to weapons. I think BIS added it to overcome muffled sounds inside a vehicle. Anyway it's silly and takes away some of the (great) atmosphere.
MisterXY 0 Posted May 24, 2007 The beeps suck so bad. When you get hit in the real world, you don't even know with what you got hit, so it's too late to take a guess uhh?
Big Dawg KS 6 Posted May 24, 2007 Well it was in OFP too and nobody ever brought it up. The only difference was it was a little quieter and only sounded from more critical damage.

So every time i hit a tank with some AT in Arma, my silly mind tells me to watch out for a reversing truck. I have the same problem , every time I hear the beeping I'm wondering if I'm about to be run over by a tank backing-up. I really don't mind that they have a beeping firealarm. Only thing wrong with it that it sounds like it's near you when it's actually the tank 500m away you just hit.
Rynthas 0 Posted May 24, 2007 Yeah, I've wondered about this as well. All too often I don't hear the large explosions (AT hitting the tank I'm in) but instead I get a little "Beep-beep-beep." Same rings true for aircraft, though any damage sets it off. I'd really much rather have audible damage sounds and the beeping as a critical failure indicator: Tank engine is on fire, time to get out...or helo engine is on fire/shut down, need to restart it or autorotate down. Oddly, I tend to hear bullets pinging off of my vehicles, but not the huge booms...
KaiserPanda 0 Posted May 24, 2007 It's kinda funny that the sound of a tank firing - which has enough force to kill if you're right in front of it - barely carries over a distance, but you can hear that stupid beeping for miles. Also that whipcrack from bullets that you can realy only hear for a few feet (small object, small sonic boom) caries over the deafening sound of a support MG. Wierdness! Razgovory 0 Posted May 25, 2007 Is that what that little cracking noise is? I figured it was bullets breaking the sound barrier but since nobodies ever really shot at me I wouldn't know. Do bullets really make that sound.
frederf 0 Posted May 25, 2007 Yes, super sonic crack (although ArmA has it on the subsonic MP5 rounds too, oops). Check out: http://dslyecxi.com/bestoftactical3.html The "X. Future Stuff" section has a very good video of such sounds in real combat.
4 IN 1 0 Posted May 25, 2007 edit: i dont think there is need to change supersonic 9MM into lower power subsonic, it aint .45 which have a good stoping power
frederf 0 Posted May 25, 2007 edit: i dont think there is need to change supersonic 9MM into lower power subsonic, it aint .45 which have a good stoping power Um, the MP5SD and M9SD magazines have 340m/s (i.e. subsonic) muzzle velocities. They shouldn't make the supersonic crack. M9 is 360m/s, which is just above the 340m/s speed of sound, and probably would be subsonic very quickly after leaving the gun. MP5 is 400m/s M4SD is 850m/s.
