You hate OFP's implementation of DirectPlay in MP?

Recommended Posts

Woohoo! Read what Suma (Ondrej Spanel) wrote on this thread:

OK. Patience everybody. You know this is going to take a long time.

DirectPlay is Microsoft's DirectX interface for MP network gaming. OFP currently uses it.

A large proportion of OFP's MP limitations has been blamed on DirectPlay. Other games using DirectPlay seem to have similar MP limitations.

BIS is now talking about replacing the use of DirectPlay with something else to provide MP gameplay.

Well, I think it's definitly worth the money to get adsl or at least isdn. I have fiber or whatever it's called in English, 10 Mbit/sec (10.000 kbits/sec).

Nothing can stop BIS it seems!

id, Bungie, Epic and all the others can go blow a pipe - BIS rules the game(s)!

Great! Its currently only a minor problem, but its still nice to see that BIS are doing this kind of stuff. All thats lacking now is a less bouncy physics and OFP will be the 2nd best game ever. Well, at high levels an increase of 1 is harder to gain than from 9999th to 9998th wink.gif

BIS are one of the few companies to give a damn about the fans. Which is great. Clearly.

They are propably making a clean udp based lowlevel networking code from scratch, wich im sure will perform _much_ better than the ms directplay shite... And it would also mean a very easy port of the dedicated server to linux or other OS´s... Great stuff BIS! smile.gif

I agree that would be a nice fix/addition. BIS does provide better game support than many companies I've purchased from.

Way to go!

smile.gif Halleluja!!!

This will indeed probably take a while, but I'm sure the whole community will benefit from this. This will probably mean that there will be a linux port so that a lot of isp's and gaming server host will start running an ofp server!!! And if they don't it will at least be possible to rent one on e.g. barry'sworld.

Fantastic news! biggrin.gifbiggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

My rough guess would be that this will take about 4 months. 1 month to design, 1 to implement, 0.5 to test, 0.5 to bugfix, 0.25 to test and 0.25 to bugfix and 0.25 month to put available for download.. (or something like that :-))

Finaly they made it. Thank god, thanks for your blessings.

Well, you might happen to know why I am so glad about this.

I think their choice will fall on winsock2, probably, or something very similar.

What is the difference you may ask?

The difference is that Sockets are at a much lower level then DirectPlay. This means you can do more tricks and tweaks during programming, and make the impossible come true. That's not likely to happen with a high level API as DirectPlay, but probably with a low level like Winsock.

What else? Winsock is the implementation of Unix sockets, the invention of it goes to the credit of some very genuine people. DirectPlay, on the other side, goes on the credit of non gamers, and uses most likely Winsock underneath, and so It can impossibly be faster then Winsock.

What's the additional Fuzz? Sockets are common programming practice. It makes little difference wheater you write your sockets on windows, or unix or linux. Therefore, server will get very better, as for now, they are forced to simulate a DirectPlay server with sockets, this extra fuzz can most likely be skiped completely.

And off course, DirectePlay in it's current development cycle represents how M$ Programmers think of online gaming. How it has to communikate, and what it supports or not. If you write the neteninge yourself, it's rather the net engine suiting in your game, then the game suiting in the netengine ( which can't happen after the game has been developed ).

It's nice to know that BIS are still updating OFP after it has been out for 8 months now biggrin.gif

don't think there's many other games companies that do this kinda thing, though maybe they are just smart and realise that OFP could be their one and only hit of this size, bit like Valve and Half-Life biggrin.gif Hehehe, well either way, kudos to 'em

All this and oxygen/visitor too! lucky old us, thanks BIS
