tophe 69 Posted April 16, 2007 I read the old OFP thread on using SketchUp for building models in OFP. http://www.flashpoint1985.com/cgi-bin....ketchup SketchUp is a really nice program and it speeds up modelling ALOT! But... After imorting a model into O2 i find that faces and vertices are completely messed up. If I make a simple box in SketchUp I'll end up with atleast 5 vertices in every corner. There is just tons of "junk-code" in th exported SketchUp models. So it seems that the cleanup-process before the models are usable are so great that I might aswell model in o2 directly. I know that many of you think that's better, but that's another discussion so please do not discuss that here. This thread is about how to use SketchUp with AmrA. I'm looking for good sollutions to import cleaner models from SketchUp into O2. Are there any good export plugins or setting in Sketchup? Or is there any preferable way to model in SketchUp to make it more suitable for export to O2? Kindly. Tophe of OOPS
opteryx 1562 Posted May 31, 2007 Bumping because I'm curious too, just got a hold of SketchUp today and.... WOW! what an amazing program, super easy to use. Made my very first 3d model ever today too. http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/1753/irakhuspf5.gif Not very impressive or done yet, but it's a start! Any chance for me to get this working in ArmA with current tools?
Dannyllnl69 0 Posted May 31, 2007 nice guys so , you can use it to work on buildings ??
wika_woo 182 Posted May 31, 2007 Building will take like 10 seconds to make lol.. I tried sketchup, only once though.. I've never tried using it for mods..
StryDa 0 Posted June 2, 2007 just downloading now. been wanting to get into model making and it looks easy to use TY will have some fun tonight.

opteryx 1562 Posted June 16, 2007 Bump Come on, does anyone know how to get cleaner models in O2 from SketchUp?
seafire6 0 Posted June 17, 2007 I just checked out sketchup 6 and it certainly appears to be far more intuitive to use than other 3d modelling programs out there, particularly for buildings/structures. From looking at the FAQ's available at sketchup , you can export sketchup files to 3ds. format and from there we should be able to bring them into O2. A while [yrs ago] I used a program called Wings 3d and there was a way to convert the wings file to 3ds and then to 02; or perhaps it was the 3ds file directly into O2, I can't remember. Did you try the 3ds format to O2? If we can figure this out I'll use sketchup for all of my projects. Your building looks sharp BTW.
opteryx 1562 Posted June 17, 2007 I followed the tutorial that the the topic starter linked to, so I export it as a 3ds file, did the Anim8or thing and opened the file in O2, it works but the model becomes very screwy, here's what I mean: In SketchUp with textures In SketchUp wireframe In O2 I hardly know anything about 3d moddeling so I don't have a clue what's going on, but I'm trying to learn. seafire6 0 Posted June 17, 2007 The anim8tor technique is what I was referring to in my post. Its a shame since the sketchup program is so much easier to use. My main interest is in bringing more buildings into the Arma world. Perhaps the official tools will make it easier to import various files into O2 and maybe O2 will be in english. smellyjelly 0 Posted June 17, 2007 I've never used O2 or whatever, but I used Sketchup for about a year when I made mods for the GTA games. It didn't work too well because there would be invisible walls everywhere. Â Still, the way I'd do it was save it and then import it to Zmod. Would that work for Armed Assault? Opteryx: It looks like O2 made turned everything into triangles. I don't really know though because I've never used it. Â Â Also, if anyone wants to try out Sketchup, I think google released a free version. I'm not sure if it's any good or not, as I've never used it.

Yeah I made a box to test t out and every face had a diagonal line through it, I guess that makes everything into triangles ehehehe..Quote[/b] ]Also, if anyone wants to try out Sketchup, I think google released a free version. smellyjelly 0 Posted June 17, 2007 Yes, I think ZModeler is freeware. It's been a year or two before I used it though. Also, I don't think it will except .skp, so you'll have to use the full version of Sketchup or maybe there's a download that will add more save types. I'll try looking up some tutorials and I'll post them here to see if some of it could apply to Armed Assault. On second thought, it may have been Gmax. Both could work, but I'm just confusing myself now. I think this is the Zmodeler website: http://www.zmodeler2.com/ Gmax: http://www.turbosquid.com/
Guest Posted June 17, 2007 to be honest... I think this program is exactly what is named... Sketchup.... Its only good for making a sketch of a building. The real building will probally be reoptimized from whatever sketchup can produce. So you will need another 3d modeling prog. and you will have to probally unwrap the whole thing again anyways if you want your model to leave the oldschool beginners format of addons. The current mapping for sketchup is STACKING all the texture space. Will new shaders you are going to have some issues when trying to use them. Looks like a good tool, but by no means the last stage before exporting to o2.... mabey o3 in the future.
opteryx 1562 Posted June 17, 2007 Quote[/b] ]o3 in the future. Okay this has had me confused for a while, will ArmA have it's own 3d prog called Oxygen 3? or do we just use O2?
CameronMcDonald 146 Posted June 17, 2007 Yeah, apparently new Texview, and new Oxygen => O3 (which should actually be called Ozone).
