How is ArmA?

Recommended Posts

HI!

Ive seen this game and thought it to be a miracle!!!

but first i would like to know if soldiers perform realistic movements and tactics or just run around the battlefield.

Please watch this video, I know its funny, but its the best example I found to show you what im asking

Do they cover themselves, and perform those movements??

thanks a lot biggrin_o.gif

No, nothing quite like that. In close quarters, the AI is a little lacking. But in the country side, which makes up 95% of the island, they do move in leaps and cover eachother.

ArmA is an excellent game. The stock campaign is a little lacking, but player made content is generally excellent.

It's worth the money.

Hi b1sh0p

AI do cover their arcs.

Skylining your self like in you video (hint hint) does result in more detections and kills by AI

They are as good as humans in flanking maneuvers.

They do not supress enough. (needs improvement)

AI in ArmA is editable so this can be fixed. We have FSM editors so we as a commnity can do what we want with this.

The AI are better in country than Urban

AI in ArmA is editable so Urban can be fixed.

Kronzky has already produced an AI Urban Patrol script that has improved AI in Urban environments. Expect other improvements.

The AI in ArmA is better than any other game.

Kind Regards walker

If you live in the US, than its worth the money because its no more than $20 biggrin_o.gif

The AI of course is not that professional but there are certain "tactics" they also possess. One being for example to shoot like a sharpshooter even with a pistol tounge2.gif

If you want anything that tactical you need to be dedicated in the game!! This means that a period of 3-4 or even 6 month to completely get into the game and invest a lot of time in so you can join a professional clan that always/only plays like that.

And ONLY buy the game if your rig is monster strong smile_o.gif

Why? The game runs fine on Geforce 6600s and Radeon 9600s so why would you need a monster rig? Of course if you want max settings you will need an 8800 but otherwise the game is playable on most normal PCs.

I wouldn't call the AI in the game "sharpshooters" unless you turn on "Super AI" in the difficulty options. On the easiest setting they actually aim pretty badly.

Hi all

[CS]SOBR[1st-I-R] is incorrect you do not need a monster rig but it helps.

I am running ArmA on a laptop with

Athlon 64 3400

512MB Ram

ATI 9700 128mb

Realtek AC97 sound card

More or less minimum spec it runs fine on Low settings and recently with the new beta patch I was able to trebble my view distance, which even at default is at least 3 times what I get in any other FPS game.

Best game you will ever buy.

In the UK it is still in the Charts the latest BF was released two weeks after ArmA at 10 UK pounds cheaper never got as high in the charts; was reduced in price to less than 10 pounds and left the chart 3 weeks ago.

ArmA did not have one hundredth of the advertising and marketing that BF has had and is out performing it in sales.

That means that most perople are buying ArmA on personal recommendation from people who have it or have seen it on their friends machines or have seen the vast array of vidios for it on YouTube.

ArmA is not just an FPS it is a tank sim and flight simulator, and has the best scenario/mission editor of any game.

Kind Regard walker

ArmA is not a tank and flight simulator.

You do get to drive tanks and fly some planes and choppers, but only in very limited mode, a million miles away from it being a simulator though.

Second that!

I'm running a 6600GT on AGP, a low end card, with a fairly low end machine now( smirk, used to be so good, sad_o.gif ) and I can run it smoothly on low.

Ok sorry I need to correct that. You'll need a monster rig if you want to play the game in a good graphical quality.

I have a Radon 9600Pro myself and it doesnt really work. It doesn on low of course but then again.. honestly at that stage OFp provides better graphics.

So if you want to enjoy the game in the quality you have seen pics and movies from, THEN you need a monster rig. Otherwise a upper standard PC would do quite fine in medium Id guess.

I disagree. As you can see in my sig, my system is far from being a monster rig. The game runs great and easily looks 10x better than OFP. Even when putting textures on low its better than ofp, very low and yea you have the ofp look.

thanks a lot!

actually, im a pilot at Falcon 4, Pacific Fighters and Lock on. So when i buy a decent pc, i will especialise in aircraft...

And do AI cover themselves and get up attacking in group? I mean, is it something like Brothers In Arms system or CoD?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHtrKmikJJo

Or they just act individually and stand wherever they want and shoot, something like in MoHAA or Hidden and Dangerous 2.

thanks.

As [CS]SOBR[1st-I-R] says ArmA at any price is a bargain.

AI do stick together and attack together, but they can also be ordered individualy.

"How is ArmA?"

The engine rocks and the gameplay, graphics, animation are top notch but game design doesnt give it justice.

If your into MP then buy it. If your like me and prefer the SP then still buy it but be prepared to be dissapointed on more than one occasion.

I wouldn't judge the AI on videos that show them moving. You really want to see the AI reactions when there fired upon  whistle.gif

Yea, the AI can be a little slow to shoot sometimes. And they also seem alittle bit out of it.

I've had teamates run pointlessly run towards the enemy in the middle of the road while getting shot at.  sad_o.gif

Still, it's not really all that bad. I was surprised, when doing a stealth mission, to see an enemy unknowingly walk past me when I was hiding behind a wall. I assumed he would have automatticly seen me.

not so good.. is it? biggrin_o.gif

The a.i.?

Well that might depend on skill settings and mission design.

The a.i. is imo quite good since not every single action performed by them is scripted/coded into the mission. In most games with what you might consider "good" a.i. you dont get to place them on a map and play/edit to understand what makes them good.

In Arma:

[*]The a.i. colect and share information (report enemy positions).

[*]Use a rank system.

[*]Comunicate with other a.i. squads (i.e. call for medical assistance).

[*]Use real team comunications (squad leader will direct squad members where to receive medical aid or magazines).

With 2 waypoint and a trigger you can make one a.i. squad reinforce another one that is under atack, and you dont even need to tell them where to go. They are far from perfect but i wouldnt trade them for any other a.i. out there smile_o.gif .

Perhaps also consider: ''Red orchestra''.

Note, the AI is bad but the gameplay is much better then Arma (my opinion) and still very realistic and its really only an online game.

This game (ArmA) I think will be on your HD for a very long time since it will upgraded often with new patches, new vehicles etc etc.

But for pure fun and realistic man to man fighting Red ochestra is higher on the list for me.

The campaign is a joke. The rest of the game is close to A+. It's worth the money wink_o.gif

As much as the fanboy in me wants to scream out, I gotta agree with you. RO has the infantry combat well thought out and it plays nicely. But it's not ArmA, it's not the tactical shooter that incoroporates so much more than just infantry.
