FM-92a STINGER

Recommended Posts

Hey all!

im a bit dissapointed on the stinger.

i mean, its a nice gun but:

The ironsight isnt real.

since when can u reload a stinger?

no 'locking' sound?

no max-aiming time?

a very good example of aiming the stinger and the sounds it makes can be found here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAaUvynmW04

Note that the GAS module is not able to cool, and start IR eye for an endless time

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v....search=

see in the last movie, the gunner removing the GAS module.

i have been looking for ironsights of a stinger, but cant find it.

i guess i have to make a copy of my army instruction manual and post it later.

when you look thru the ironsight, you have 3 aiming points.

much like this animation. it enables you to fire the rocket a little infront of the airplane's direction, assuring a HIT.

stinger-aim.gif

i just CANNOT find any ironsight of a stinger online....

but i hope some mod-team will make a better stinger addon.

maybe a version without IFF?

inlcuding landrover, lil stinger stash in car-hanger(?) a tripod to put ur stinger on... and hopefully some cases

maybe gasmodule anims and a nice IFF ID sounds...

Sorry for my stinger fetish, but i once was a real stinger shooter in the army.

Cheers!

He has a point about reload tho. You cant reload a M136, neither can you with a stinger. At least not as far as i know.

I know the Javelin is bugged and not finished but I have a great video of its demonstration which I'll when im home from work. It shows the missile leaping out of the tube then firing its rocket motor a split second after.

Totally agree with original post that stinger should have that groovy IR lock tone!!!!!

Trust me, this is the best illustration of the Stinger sights you'll ever find on the web.stingerob5.jpg

best image on the web? - well, untill i scanned my handbook ofcourse, that is IF i can find it....

But, your image comes VERY close indeed. cant remember the square aim point D in the middle, i thought it was round.

next to that, i think i was very close with my homebrew animation too....

last time i had a real stinger in my hands is 12+yrs ago smile_o.gif

anyways, the aiming stuff on a stinger is as simple as hell, no optics, nothing other than some molded plastic....

How effective is it in real life? I saw a video of some guys in Bosnia who shot down an Mi17. I was expecting the chopper to go kaboom but instead it just crash landed with a bit of smoke. I take it its a fragmentation warhead?

It seems you can engage targets in ArmA all the way across the map with it.

I'm pretty sure it's fragmentation warhead. In OFP they are a bit overpowered, almost like minature nuclear bombs. They can even take on light armor such as a BMP and such, which is fairly absurd.

It seems like you can lock onto vehicles in ArmA, but I haven't tested how much damage it does.

Very little damage most likely, although there are anecdotal

reports of Stinger missiles tracking (by accident) on ground

vehicles. In the real world, however, you'd probably get your

balls chewed for firing a $30,000 dollar missile at a vehicle,

when an AT4 costs about $2,000   tounge2.gif

Mind you, the other way around, anti-tank weapons have

been fired at aircraft in history - witness the "surface to air"

84mm carl gustav rounds fired at Argie aeroplanes in the

Falklands war (and the RPGs used as SAMs by various

"armies")

edit: Anecdotal reports of real world Stinger missiles tracking

vehicles, I mean.

yeah it is round! The curves are also at the bottom of the screen because you then automatically aim the thing upwards where the rocket is supposed to go! wink_o.gif Kinda like the javelin idea... But also as mentioned so that you have a good flightpath in front of the target. Depending offcourse on angles etc

Had fun with a stinger simulator few years ago. Basicly a stinger launcher with extra gadget ontop of the scopes. So you see into a video world but with the real scope! And I did shoot down the enemy hind! rofl.gif

And to have the proper sounds would be cool. But I would love a nice missile sound aswell...

For BIS to implement the code for disposable weapons would be huge. WGL has done scripted solutions for it before but it's quite inelegant as opposed to a real solution. Also weapons that have the round inside (and don't take up inventory) would go hand in hand with this.

Improvements to the Stinger in ArmA would be nice. The sound based on lock strength, increase in time it takes to aquire a target, and less of a "sure thing" to hit the target would all be major improvements.

since when can u reload a stinger?

Stingers actually are 'reloadable'. The magazines just happen to include the disposable launcher tube and sights, the handguard with BCU and IFF antenna is reuasble, they can be attached to a new stinger 'round' (which consists of the missile in the launcher tube and the optics).

Second, the ArmA engine doesn't support proper IR based locking, lock tones, etc., or disposable launchers, so stop asking for them. The engine would need to be modified (especially for the locking) if not quite a bit, and that's entirely up to BIS.

Just make sure you keep it inaccurate enough to maintain ITAR / Wassenaar compliance, unless you want to end up in Gitmo for an indefinite period of time.

I call shenanigans on this.

excuse me, in OUR army, you shoot and pick another...

yoo got a nice big box, with a few tubes, where you click the stuff on....

i NEVER seen a soldier in the field 'reload' his stinger...

and if it WAS possible, why didnt i learned that? but hey- it the dutch army,so who knows....

And to my thought, it should be easy to at least come a little close to reality.

needed:

1 landrover +hangar

the hangar contains certain amount of stinger rounds.

a lil fix on the ironsights, and.. maybe only a fictive lock sound?

then drive around with ur stinger team and fire away smile_o.gif

Well I guess it depends on how you define reloadable. Each stinger round is of course not reusable, but new stinger rounds can be attached to the reusable grip assembly with BCU and IFF antenna. So the whole assembled weapon is not entirely disposable.
