mcnools 62 Posted March 4, 2007 I don't really know if this is a bug, or if it's realistic, but when using the M107 or M24 I have to aim LOWER to hit things, wich means the bullet hits the target in the head if I aim at his belly, wich seems a little bit odd. Is anyone else having this? it was present both in 1.04 and still in 1.05.
Wolfrug 0 Posted March 4, 2007 I believe some dev posted about this someplace, but basically the various weapons are zeroed in at varying distances : most assault rifles at 300m, pistols at 150 (or was it 50?) meters, and sniper rifles at considerably more, can't remember what exactly. 400-1000 or somesuch So there's an optimal distance at which the bullets' parabolic arc will strike the exact place you point your scope, anything below that makes it fly too high and everything above too low. All part of the sniping experience. Regards, Wolfrug

Its realism mate, taking into account factors such as wind, and the bullet losing power and losing its height
mr reality 0 Posted March 4, 2007 Its realism mate, taking into account factors such as wind, and the bullet losing power and losing its height If its a case of the bullet loosing power or height then it would make sense to aim higher not lower ....
Provac 0 Posted March 5, 2007 Its realism mate, taking into account factors such as wind, and the bullet losing power and losing its height If its a case of the bullet loosing power or height then it would make sense to aim higher not lower .... Depends on how far away the target is. The bullet rises before it falls.
JdB 151 Posted March 5, 2007 Err....no, it goes into a straight line until it loses power (starts running out of propellant) and starts to descend.... The only way you can "climb" while firing is to use a weapon on rapid single-fire, burst or full-auto, and than a round will still not climb, but the muzzle will causing the following rounds to go higher than where you were aiming at initially. Not the way a sniper rifle is used.
MamiyaOtaru 1 Posted March 5, 2007 A bullet will climb if you fire up. Â And that is what you have to do to hit a target that is level with you. Â You aim up a slight amount to offset the amount the bullet will fall due to gravity (and it will fall, it doesn't get where it's going instantaneously). Â So yes, the bullet does rise before it falls. The sniper rifles are zeroed at 500 meters. Â That means the sight is exactly where it needs to be to hit someone at 500 meters by aiming the cross right at him: the aiming slightly up part is built in. Â If he is farther away, you need to aim up even more (putting the cross above him), since the bullet will take longer to get there and will fall more. Â Obviously, if he is closer than 500 meters you don't need to aim as high (so you put the cross below him), since the bullet won't have time to fall fast enough to offset the slightly upward momentum given by the built in slight upward angle of the barrel compared to the scope. This is pretty simple stuff. Â Just have to get it through your head that the scope isn't exactly parallel with the barrel, it's already adjusted to "aim higher." Â If the target's too close, then the gun is aimed too high (so you have to aim down, putting the cross below him). Â Simple as that.
fasad 1 Posted March 5, 2007 A good explanation there MamiyaOtaru. Also note that the bullet does not actually have to travel upwards, just arc above the line of sight of the scope.
MamiyaOtaru 1 Posted March 5, 2007 Of course All sorts of variables with elevation of shooter and target and such. Hopefully we can at lest get the basics across.

CG Man 0 Posted March 5, 2007 It's always a good Idea to have a science lesson on balistics before you go to a range especialy for a war sim Arma ain't a video game on the Play Station, or BF on a kids PC
blankfish 0 Posted March 5, 2007 adding to this ballistic drop thread though slightly off topic: the other day was getting PO'ed with arma as the blood, sweat and tears mission wouldn't end, I was wounded and had tried everything to get the mission to finish. So I thought to waste some time in case that helped I'd try to see how much bullet drop happened with a sniper rifle and wether the claims that the bullets being modelled/parabolic arcs was true. so i aim a little wobbley (due to my wound) up in the air at a bird, followed it around a bit and fired my first shot.. and lo and behold the bird fell from the sky!!! I was like WTF!! bah bullet drop my arse! etc etc was pretty upset.. haven't managed to hit a bird again with a sniper rifle Was just a super lucky first shot LOL :-) :-) this game frustrates and amazes all in one :-)
rom_un 0 Posted March 6, 2007 This his real bullet data for .308 Win (M24): As you can see, the top (arrow in french) is at 12 inches for a 400 Yd Zero. I begin to make balistics tables (and mil-dot manual) for arma but i lose my graphic card . So just be patient.
