j w 0 Posted January 5, 2007 I'm just curious, since I might be setting one up, but I need to know how much traffic I should buy. So the info I wish to know is: <ul>[*]How much traffic have you used the last months?[*]How much do you play?[*]How many players have been playing?[*]What kind of missions have you been playing? Thanks for answers JW

anders^on 0 Posted January 7, 2007 for a server 10-20gb should be ok Never. A reasonably well visited Coop server with VON and an average of 20 players that stay on for 5 hours a day (I say again: reasonably popular) uses around 250GB/month. Make that 200GB without VON and 300GB if you tune the settings for higher-than-default bandwidth. In our case (server.armed-assault.de:41910) a very well visited Coop server used ~200GB in just two weeks (no VON). I based my estimations on that and on a post by Suma (?) who said that bandwidth per player is 32kb/s with VON enabled (16kb/s in either direction). A CTI server on the other hand might well use up to 1TB/month if it's popular (which probably won't be the case, given the current instability of the server and the massive desync that often occurs). I suggest you look out for a dedicated server with >250GB/month traffic included if you're planning to host a popular public server in the long run.
S.O.S 0 Posted January 9, 2007 for a server 10-20gb should be ok Never. Your statement is definitly wrong, you assumed that there is only one, simple outcome for that case, when there really are a number of only jointly sufficient results.
anders^on 0 Posted January 9, 2007 If you're planning to host a 10 slot coop server for your friends or clan mates then 20GB might just be sufficient. "Never" might have been too blunt, my apologies. However my personal understanding of an ArmA server is somewhat larger in size. When we talk about hosting a game most people will have in mind 20-30 players, and so do I. Quote[/b] ]you assumed that there is only one, simple outcome for that case To my understanding a server will always use a certain amount of bandwitdh per player, at least with default settings. How exactly can there be different "outcomes", apart from size and popularity? Also I am not assuming in any way, I stated what my log files told me, based on the premises I mentioned above. Jack-UK 0 Posted January 9, 2007 In SWAF we used to run an OFP server which took 100-500 GB a month... Better to get something with unlimited bandwidth.. coz as better maps are released, and optimisation occurs in patches, expect more players on a server at a time.. meaning more bandwidth.. and when 16th Feb comes expect a ton more players joining the game
wex-q 0 Posted February 18, 2007 Now that the 505-version (stop bragging about it being the UK-version, it's the rest-of-europe-version ) has been released, does anyone have good stats over your server, ie, how often people play, how many, how much traffic that has been used, what connection the server have etc? With regards wex
terox 316 Posted February 18, 2007 based on the ofp engine zeus used to run a 30 player server 24/7/365 and we could use anything up to 400gb/month/server from what i have been told, and it may just be hearsay, so someone running a dedi like cia may be able to clarify here the arma engine uses less bandwidth per player, so we are guessing we can run a 40 player server using our hardware and expect the same 400gb/month/server for a linux Now i would really love to see a busy server's bandwidth stats, because we are going to relocate our server to a different colo and forewarning of the correct bandwidth expectations would be great for us when negotiataing a contract we estimate needing a maximum ever of 1 terabyte per month for our 2 servers and have actually come across a few colo's that will give us either unlimited or 2 terabytes. I would assume the unlimited bandwidth will be a choked connection, not a 10 to 100mb burstable so could someone who actually knows what they are talking about give some realtime stats please Much appreciated
Soviet Spetsnaz 0 Posted February 19, 2007 Unlimited transfer is not really unlimited. At some point (usually in the 2-3TB range) the hosting company will reduce your bandwidth or cut it altogether. Such companies have poor connections. Expect your pings to be well above 100ms. I'd stick with limited transfer in the range of 1 to 2TB.
