My experience with Starforce NOT ARMA RELATED

Recommended Posts

First of all I would like to say that this thread has nothing to do with ARMA/OFP and should not get into such a discussion. It is simply for people to discuss their experiences with Starforce.

Anyway a long time ago I installed a few game demo's. One of the demos had starforce. It was either "Bet on a soldier" or "Heroes soldiers of ww2". At that time I wasn't even sure what Starforce was, didn't care, so I went along and installed it. The PC started acting wierd as my optical drives would not be recognize and just dissapear. Well it happened randomly and I had no idea what was causing it. I did a virus scan, and all that. Couldn't find any software related problems, so I thought it must have been the hardware. Since it would do it randomly, I was thinking a PSU failure, so I got a new PSU. Well it was still doing it, randomly, only not as much as before. crazy_o.gif

As I was trying to figure out what the problem was, trying different things, I must have screwed the new power supply in the process because on day my PC wouldn't restart at all. Then I got it to restart (So not sure if it was a psu failure), but my hard drive would not be recognized. So I thought I screwed up the harddrive somehow. My OS was on the harddrive so I had to get new harddrive and new OS.

After installing, everything worked as normal again. I never installed the demos again because I wasn't interested. A few years after the incident I read about Starforce and read articles from people who had problems with Starforce. The syntoms seemed very similar. Now that I think about it, it makes sense, and I'm pretty sure it was Starforce.

Anyone with similar incidents?

Hmm I have a cup of coffee sitting here on a DVD drive that used to be recognised as an optical drive not a DVD drive and that used to appear and more often never be recognised by my OS WinMe at that time.

As it came on a PC that was preloaded with HUGE amounts of nonsense it might be that some form of Starforce protection was working on my system. The drive worked about 50% of the time when the system was new and this % rapidly dropped to nothing.

I have not used that drive in any PC I've built since as I always assumed that it was at fault but as I assume ArmA needs a DVD drive I might *carefully* remove my mug and pop it into a machine.

To check for starforce follow the steps:

1. Right click "my computer"

2. Click "hardware"

3. Click "device menager"

4. Click view then "show hidden devices"

5. Look under "non plug and play drivers" and see if you have starforce listed.

Thats pretty much the only way to find out if you have it or not. It makes it difficult to localize a problem especially if you have no idea about starforce.

I have not had any problems with StarForce protected games in terms of the StarForce driver damaging my computer. However, I run StarFore remover after uninstalling a StarForce protected game to make sure StarForce is removed from my computer. I tend to avoid StarForce protected games but I make exceptions for certain games.

Oh, I'm a hypocrite ( whistle.gif ).

Many optical drives do have problems with Starforce, mine not.

I have Starforce on my system but no problems with it. Maybe there is a list with incompatible hardware somewhere in the dephts of the net. huh.gif

Back then when i first installed Soldiers Heroes of WW2 it gave me a little headache, only after numerous reboots it ran okay. In the meantime there´s an "inofficial" patch for it that solved all problems. Would´nt buy anymore titles supporting it since it´s a nasty piece of software and i tend to boycott these. Hate programmes that dig deep into the system, one of the reasons i avoid the norton firewalls too.

My ´puter is my castle or something like that.

Something Arma related.

It seams, if the rumors have a true core, that Morphicon will not use Starforce for the german Armed Assault version.

The simple fact remains that discussions about copy protection are prohibited on these forums.
