Explosions

Recommended Posts

i already sent a PM to Placebo about this but have not got a reply back:

Quote[/b] ]Hi Paul

i know what we see is WIP but the explosions in the videos that i have seen seem to lack impact, i have seen a few people comment on this as well.

here is a small clip of the current explosion effect:

http://www.everetts.plus.com/Files/ArmAC4.avi

and here is a youtube vid of a real C4 explosion:

i know this is only a minor feature of the game but i was just pointing it out

thanks

Jamie

p.s. on a different aspect

do you know if the physics engine is being improved upon?

i think this kind of thing would annoy me after playing the game for ages, lets hope it gets improved   thumbs-up.gif

I think we're seeing here is a conflict between peoples expectations and reality.

If the huge fireball was removed people would say the explosions looked boring or some such thing.

People have come to expect things to look like Hollywood were they always use gasoline explosives to get that yellow colour.

A few months ago people were complaining about a screenshot of waves in OFP, they didn't look real was the consensus.

I happened to be on a plane a few days after and either reality had changed to accomodate ArmA waves or the community was wrong because the waves below me looked just like the screenshot people were complaining about. smile_o.gif

If BI want to get people to think the game looks realistic they have to make it look like people expect reality to be, not the way reality is.

Hollywood wins over reality all the time it seems.

A pretty good example of an explosion effect in a game would be Halo:

notice the initial blast wink_o.gif

And let's throw in a real grenade for compairision to see how wrong that explosion really is.

Heh, explosions and good! And I'm glad BIS are showing them all off, they worked hard and deserved it.

Well I for one was hoping for explosions that are realistic for 1 game finally out of 100s before it. Real explosions are instant, dusty. They are not slow rolling fireballs. And real life grandes are usually pretty pitiful looking.

that was underwater / mud and seems to differ a lot from other nades videos ...

hopefully there will be size (height, width and density) variation possible for grenades ... so it gives "more variations" with minimal perf impact ...

more videos (some were already posted around these forums so if saw them already good for You smile_o.gif

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-20062050494804859

grenades use in real fight, clearly You can see it also depends on terrain (explosion is more subtle and kicked dust is lower yet still dense )

and grenades in real fight inside structures

I hope not only size variation but also assignment of patterns and colors for each explosion.
