MG's in ArmA

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know -

If I am using a light machine gun (M60, SAW etc...) and I am kneeling behind a waist height'ish rock, will I be able to kneel and have the bipod automatically rest on the rock at the correct height, same goes for if I'm standing behind a head height wall or so.

In most military oriented games you can't do this and, like in OFP, you have to get exactly the right height to be able to shoot over the rock. In real life you can simply stick the bipod on the rock, take cover behind it, aim and shoot.

One of the only games i've seen this implemented in is Red Orchestra and i've always thought this was something that was lacking in most military games, especially in a game like OFP which is more akin to a sim.

resting the bipod on hard surfaces is NOT recommended if your primary intention is to shoot accurately or even kinda sorta "that way there". with my experience, I can tell you the bouncing effect really makes it a difficult job.

Yes, I think that this is a difficult thing to implement on a highly-varied map.

World War II Online is still trying to figure this one out, last I read.

I believe the only feasible way of implementing such a feature would be to have certain walls/props capable of resting the MG on however as much as it may look cool, it’s highly impractical. Therefore I doubt it’s in the game.

You mean something like in Red Orchestra OstFront 41-45 ?

Question is if it's significant enough to warrent the implementation.

Allowing weapons to rest on the ground alone probably won't be terribly difficult, but automatically letting weapons rest on objects certainly won't be easy to do right, and do we want it at all if we can't rest weapons everywhere?

One solution to get weapons to rest on objects is to make objects that allow it. Every object will need to have standard heights allowing for prone/crouched/standing modes - this will probably end up looking terribly unrealistic as you'll find yourself only able to rest your weapon on certain sandbags and certain rocks etc.

In my opinion, the first proper solution is to make your character possible to ajust itself to the height of the object you're facing. You could then determine if the faces of the object infront of you allows you to rest your weapon. It would also allow to use cover properly and we wouldn't see soldiers getting up exposing half their body in order to fire over a much lower cover.

But here we're in a whole new ballpark and probably way past ofp.

In the end I'd say it's not worth the trouble until we're really ready to go all the way. game2 perhaps.

yeah i remember a mod to old half-life that was called firearms mod that had that feature at certain sandbags or windows or walls. Or when prone tounge2.gif

I can almost certainly say (well, guess) this wont be in the game.. It is possible to mod it in, kidna like what FDF done with the pickup/deploy MG/Mortar stuff, but I doubt it'll be incorporated into the released game..

Didn't Vietcong had something like this?

I think what VC tried to simulate was having the supporting hand between the stock and the surface the gun was "resting on". anyway that's how far it goes with resting the gun IRL.

having a bipod resting on a wall... first shot goes who knows where and the rest of the burst goes against/through the supporting wall and/or yourself/rest of the squad. implementing this feature would be extremely tricky to make it look realistic and IMO even then it would be totally unrealistic.

bipod on ground get's my vote tho'

There was no support in VC, you were able to shoot over cover that way.

In Red Orchestra, you can use support if the positions allows the animation to play properly. So no objects allowing for support but the player position.

In the 160 MB video, the Bipod did not clip through the ground (the M249 gunner). It should be possible to automatically use the bipod's advantage/disadvantage in prone (supported) position.

Windows, sandbags and such "standardized" objects should be usable as support. Trees too (for long rifles).

But you should be able to fold/unfold the bipod. Most bipods are hinged and shooting with unfolded support ends up in a increased swinging-motion and less accuracy.

We'll see...

we allrdy have that...

not actually, sure there are bipods on the LMG's but are they "resting" on them? nope... when using the bipods the sector you can cover with your fire is quite limited. in ofp you can turn as much as you like and the gun isn't THAT stable.

I didn't say there WAS support tounge2.gif it just kinda feels like that when shooting over objects

I'm surprised to see someone else who's familiar with that mod.  biggrin_o.gif

For old time's sake.  tounge2.gif

On topic: With the proper config settings for animations, you can limit a unit's field of fire (and possibly reduce the recoil using recoilSuffix), though implementing real working bipods without some sort of very limited work-around still seems impossible to me, even with ArmA.

I'm sure you're right.

I have seen lots of pictures and videos of soldiers shooting with the bipod placed on a hard surface though, i'll try find a few for you.
