SA-8 repaint

Recommended Posts

happened to one of my addons recently, even thought i know the anim shouldnt do that  whistle.gif

FFUR 2006 makes this happen with a few addons.

I was so kind to edit the addon a little bit to include sharp edges. Just a fast and simple edit, nothing fancy. Major part redone so that the lighting issue is gone.

Get it here;

http://s46.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0R64A9D5GV6H50W6M9JRMR76Z7

I didn't understand this at all?(sharp edges and the lighting thing)Is there something in photoshop that needed to be switched on when doing textures?...or is this done at the 3d model level?

Nope it's something you need to do in Oxygen.

Correct. It's done in O2. It's quite simple in this case, but complex addons canbe real pain in the ass to sharpen/smoothen. It makes addons look a million times better though, since wierd lighting issues are solved with it when done correctly.

Your textures have nothing to do with this.

i get a couple of bugs..

fist i get a error message, something with MCAR and repair.sqs (obviously i need MCAR, so where do i get that?)

and second, it fires missiles, but they seam to explode instantly but dont harm the launcher (and they dont harm the target either)

this is with the version with the fixed model (smooth/sharp edges) that Capt Frostbite linked to...

other then that, it´s a nice little addon smile_o.gif

now it would be nice with a couple of other radars, SAM´s, AAA´s, SCUDS and things like that (on all sies, not just east)

I don't seem to have that problem(was using it last night)Could be that it does need Mcar to funtion properly.

Yeah, you can grab the latest Mcar engine from their thread.

I only changed the model and nothing on the scripts or anything else in the PBO. So there shouldn't be any problem. But you do need the MCAR engine. I think that must be the problem.

yes, that was the problem...

when i got the MCAR engine everything worked, shot down my plane with 1 missile and i didnt get a error message....

now, where can i find other russian MCAR vehicles? biggrin_o.gif

This is basically an MCAR addon, using MCAR scripts, and as such, it totally needs the MCAR engine. The whole concept of a wheeled missile launcher rests on what the MCAR engine allows. I thought this would have been obvious lol (unless you're new to OFP and didn't know that the OFP engine does not allow fully functioning wheeled missile launchers)

This is the first Russian addon using MCAR since MCAR's creation, to be released smile_o.gif

And this baby is a biatch! wow_o.gif

It shot me down while I was hovering behind a hill. The missile flew over the hill, took a dive and blew me right out of the sky sad_o.gif

Awesome death though, but it proves it's quite dangerous biggrin_o.gif

The MCAR engine is great and we all love missiles fired from wheeled vehicles. This SA-8 is bloody awesome and a great looking vehicle.

BUZZARD @ Mar. 27 2006,21:15)]Wasn't the SA-9 GASKIN the first soviet vehicle to be released in MCAR?

SA-9 Gaskin in MCAR Release Beta 3 @ OFP.Info

Note, be sure to also get the MCAR Patch to V3.1 @ OFP.Info

No, the SA-9 was an MCAR production, released at the same time as the engine. I meant that this is the first 3rd party Russian addon using MCAR to be released.

Does anyone know a western addon counterpart for this bad boy in OFP? Anything even close to its effectiveness?

There's the Avenger from the CBT HMMWV Pack

There's the LAV-AD from the SEF LAV Pack

Although... These systems are better than the SA-8 (in OFP terms) as they are not only armed with SAMs, but with MG/cannons too

Errmmm, well with there being quite a few HMMWV packs out there I may be confusing it with another pack, but I do have an Avenger in my mission editor crazy_o.gifwink_o.gif

EDIT: Yeah sorry, I meant the SEF HMMWV Pack goodnight.gif

@ Shashman: Ah, right indeed... haven't been keeping up on MCAR, only tried out the first release I think... oh well... smile_o.gif

Actually, to be historically accurate, only the M48 Chaparral tactical SAM system would be a counterpart to the SA-8 and SA-9, since neither the LAV-AD nor the HMMVV Avenger SAM systems were available but in the end of the Cold War... smile_o.gif

So, any Chaparral on the horizon? biggrin_o.gif

If you'd still like to have a battlefield-ranged "western" SAM, check out Swissmod's fixed Rapier SAM emplacement or the MIM-23 Hawk system I think is available in a release by Swedish Weapons mod... also there's a fixed Roland SAM in Malvinas Mod Beta 3, get it @ OFP.info here .

Now all that's missing is OFrP make some Crotale SAM systems and NATO should be well represented in the Cold War period! (Since the SA-6, SA-8, SA-9, SA-11 and SA-13 already exist for OFP on the soviet side...) crazy_o.gif

I replied in terms of what's available to download and use in OFP for the NATO side wink_o.gif

Damn, MCAR missiles work better than hardcoded ones. Should we use scripted missiles for ALL vehicle types? wow_o.gif

Don't scripted missiles render all countermeasures useless? (ECP, FFUR, etc...) One thing I don't like about MCAR SAMs is that they cannot be fired at ground units, and a lot of the shorter range SAM systems have a small secondary anti-ground vehicle role

Yes, most likely..

MCAR AA missiles come with their own countermeasures so there's basicly countermeasures on all planes..

Put a Sa-8 somewhere and pilot a plane yourself.. Once you get fired upon and the missile comes in flares are deploeyd by the plane..

At least there should be tounge2.gif

Been sooooo long I last assed about with MCAR..

And yes, the Gaskin was re-released with the MCAR Engine so you should use that instead of the old one (check the thread wink_o.gif )..

Sadly the Gaskin isn't "real" as it's the BIS BRDM2 (OT) we stuck the turret on..

I had in mind updating it to use some BRDM-2 model but never had the time to do it...

well, not exactly. A SA-9 causes this because it's an IR system. A SA-8 is radar controlled so it doesn't make the attacked planes firing flares (even if it would be possible modifying a parameter in the stringtable.csv file). By default (that is, the first release) if a plane or an helicopter flies under a certain height the missile looses lock. Just don't stay in the same place cause the missile directs in the last known position. If the SA-8B is destroyed the missile looses lock too.

If you have the latest MCAR engine (0.9), you can make so that if the target flies behind a hill, so that it's no more directly visible from the shooting vehicle, the missile looses lock. To do this just depbo the Sa-8.pbo file, open up stringtable.csv in a text editor and add this line at the end of the file:

<table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr><td>Code Sample </td></tr><tr><td id="CODE">mcar_Sa8_GMK,"true"

Pbo it again and enjoy.

Slightly off topic but has anyone tried the latest MCAR engine on a dedicated server? Han't tried it yet but I get significant frame rate drop when hosting from my PC. If so, is there a way of reducing the amount of processing going on?
