Tripods?

Still, there is no way to achieve a decent walking animation for the tripods with their tentical-like appendages. The best you could reasonably achieve is a stiff leg movement and getting the "feet" to step correctly is out of the question. Over all, considering the very organic appearence of the tripods, you could potentially class it as a Man, this would allow you to animate it better and it probably wouldn't look and perform half-bad. You'd just have to worry about it's massive size, however...

hi folks,

i think that was enough flaming here. lets get a bit more productive... some people seem to be really interested in having the tripods ingame therefore i think we should collect some reference material first...

so plz post all the pics u have... biggrin_o.gif

All i can say is that research is being done now... And if all goes good the tripod production will begin next week sometime.

As for animation... We can always release a ofp1 and then hope for the better with armed assault.. But thats looking to far foward.

With that many hiddenselections, the model's face count will be simply too high and the amount of scripting to make it work (which probably would become too much work for any one person - you'd need a staff) would pile on top of that to cause further lag, add multiple tripods in the map and it's unplayable, probably so even for the first.

The easier solution: make it a Man...

Just thought id post to show my support (for thoughs of you that didnt click the link to my old thread on the previous page) for tripods in OFP.

As for the walking animations, maybe some one could take a few tips from the guys at the Tiberium Genesis mod and there recently released juggernaught giant robot thing. That seemed to have pretty good animated legs.

Also id love to see the classicle version of the tripod from the WOTW musicle.

i really appreciate c&c mod but i think without being offensive their animation was not that convincing...

i think we all could learn alot from the grumman plane... its "open source" and the community is helping to finish the model - i think this is the way to go....

so people post some reference pics...

Even that animation is a little too complex for OFP, you're talking about a leg with 3 joints, in OFP once you get past the 1st joint you're usualy screwed...  confused_o.gif

Also, being limited to a single animation per selection, it'll be impossible to get the legs to keep the foot in place on the ground. It's simply too complex for CfgAnimations, the only way to do it is with a Man animation.

Well, looks like the animation is impossible unless someone finds a way to make it move with skeletal, or vertex animations, it doesn't look like this will happen.

Rotating on 1 axis with 1 joint? It will look like it's floating around with sticks taped to the bottom, flapping around. Without 3 joints in each leg it would be impossible to capture even the rudiments of the tripod walk.

plaintiff1-

i hope you clicked on the link that i posted earlier... i dont think you know what you are talking about...there are 2 times in the movie when the tripod did a crazy walk... That is when i blew its loud horn and it like stretched. ( you can not do in ofp 1) and when it was chasing tom cruise after it got his daughter..(that is also not possible as of yet.) but the basic motion of the tripod walking will be fine. so stop harassing us about what its going to look like. If you do not have anything intelligent to say... then dont say it.

Actually, I'm a 3d artist and I've done animation. In fact, I saw that link 2 years ago when I was researching a design for another project. The link you provided has 3 legs, each with 3 or 4 joints. A poster on this board said that using anim rotate, you can rotate only one joint. I take this to mean that you cannot link animations in an object hierarchy. What I envisioned, given the information, was one joint at the top of each leg responsible for the movement of the entire leg. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that this is going to look like rubbish.

This community has done some amazing things, but some basic things are not possible given the limitations of the engine. Realistic armour penetration comes to mind as a sort of holy grail.

Wenker, I'm not abashed to say that I know more about game modelling than you do. Cut the attitude.

why not just use OFPAnim to make the movements then, its easier said than done and easy to do, its all a case of setting it up like ive done my animated hands.

and wenker, stop it with the shitty attitude to everyone who even suggests somethings. all youve done in threads like this is bitch and whine about you wanting this model and that model, welcome to the world of real life and not getting what you want when you want it.

Shut up im not bitching or whining... its you 40 yr old people that need to stop provoking fights.... And because i told someone to stop complaining about the animation... It is as easy as this.. Im lazy and dont have that much time to do shit with modding so yes i do say i want this and i want that. It comes down to this.. if the addon is made which most likley will happen.. dont play with it.. that is all i can suggest.... if you dont liek the animation of the legs.. there are loop holes in every and im sure we as a community can find one just so every one is happy. smile_o.gif

Just because someone disagrees with you doesn't mean that a fight must break out. Settle down, take a breath. You must first identify problems before you try to formulate solutions.

I can see what Wildo was on about when s/he was saying that something gets 'up on his/her tits.' This disgusting sense of entitlement you've got going on there is really something.

I'm curious, what makes you think that this addon is likely to be made?

Yep, I'm in the Wildo/plaintiff group too. Although the idea of making it a man would be quite a good idea, but it usually brings up problems with giving it weapons, but I'm sure these can be overcome wink_o.gif

What problems? Soldiers in OFP are more versatile than vehicles in terms of weapons.
