Cyprus Armed forces mod?

Recommended Posts

I was thinking if any modders out there would be interested in making a Cyprus armed forces mod. I only found a website that just shows they're air force but here it is. Cyprus Air Force

Obviously don't know much about Cyprus then do you tounge2.gif

Cyprus is divided between Greek control and Turkish control after Turkey invaded the north of the island in the 70s (possibly 1974?)

So Huey's question is valid, do you want to see Greek Cypriot forces or Turkish Cypriot forces?

Hmm... I saw that 412 the other day... thought at first it was the UN Huey on the way to LP, but it didn't go away. Poke my nose out, and that copper job is orbiting at various altitudes over my house.

SFwanabe: if you want to see the Cyprus National Guard modeled, that's the Republic of Cyprus. Technically, Turkish Cypriot males owe 2 years of service to the PE. But for some reason (what has been called here "scattered local incidents") they prefer to live in the area not under government control (think 60,000 turkish troops, with lots of armor), although an occupying army has brought them much misery, and even more anatolian backcountry yokel settlers. So most Turkish Cypriots do not serve in the PE, but rather in the army of the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" , a state recognized only by Turkey.

There was some dude from Turkey who wanted to do a 1974 war mod, even though -- leaving aside the massive human catastrophe it was -- it was a pretty poor showing for both sides. The Cypriots didn't have ammunition that matched their guns, their tanks (T-34s) were all in Nicosia supporting the coup (sponsored by the US-supported Greek Junta), and they found themselves fighting a NATO country, complete with F-104s, with for example their AA arsenal being limited to 6 40mm BOFORS that had handy markings for deflection shooting -- they went all the way up to Bf110! On the other side, the Turks botched an amphibious landing, and managed to lose something like a dozen aircraft, including one to one of those BOFORS (and before you start saying "I've done that in XXXX (game)", remember that this is a weapons system where one guy cranks the deflection, the other the elevation, a third guy calls out when they're set and the fourth pulls the trigger). So you're talking about an invasion that suffers significant losses in front of a relatively incompetent enemy (spirit, everybody had -- except for the greek officers who turned tail at the first sign of trouble. equipment necessary to fight a war -- that was fairly rare on the republic's side; training needed to avoid a catostrophe -- that was lacking on the Turkish side).

So while I think there is a Cypriot camo mod for OFP. I really don't see why anyone would want to be in an army on Cyprus, even less simulate it. Well, okay, maybe the vacationers at akrotiri or dhekelia, or the UN holidaymaking squads could find it entertaining.

...and no, I'm not providing pictures of any military installations around here (and there are plenty).

Then again, as Hegel said, every historical event happens twice. What he neglected to mention was, one as tragedy, and once as farce.

I have not seen this thread until now strangely. It does not mean that we are speechless. There are major misunderstandings here. I know Turkish History very well and I also committed my military service in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Kyrenia. I know its history throughly thumbs-up.gif

1- Wrong. No matter which countries recognize Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus that, Cyprus, is divided into two separate republics. It is not one national island therefore, tankieboy's question does exceedingly matter. You have to be specific. Otherwise, it's discrimination.

2- Wrong. You should learn its history. Before Turkish landings, there were Turkish and Greek Cypriots living together. There were three guarantor countries, England, Turkey and Greece, who validated Cyprus constitution those times. Cyprus constitution was invalid unless the three ratify it. By landing, we brought there life instead misery for Turkish Cypriots cause EOKA and other Greek terrorist organizations were massacring Turkish Cypriots in order to lessen the number of Turks living. So Greek side could dominate the island as one nation. Greek side did not stop EOKA and others and they watched the "incidents" together with the rest of the world. Like in Srebrenica, Bosnia. We must make landing and stop the massacre. You say "anatolian backcountry yokel settlers". Shame on you. They were just villagers not yokels. Not every villager is yokel.

Anyway, I am tired of correcting you. I had better put some historical record on our website.

The same reason you would if you found someone posting inaccuracy’s about your country.

Shame work on this mod did not take off as I have plenty of pictures of UN kit and lots of pictures of Ayia Napa square!

Cyprus is too big to implement in the game unfortunatelly, otherwise various mods could be made on it. Actualy now it could be made too but it would be a tiny Cyprus.

You could take a divided section like Nicosia.

Turkish - UN - Greeks

Most of the kit used by all three (UN Nation depending) has been made in some form.

Anythings possible, but before that I think certain things must be eyed;

Turkiye and Greece are members of NATO both. And all of us here though we are unofficial here are more or less on the mod of "own" country representation. IMHO we should at least remember our ties to the alliance(s) and proper relations - behaviours - doctrines of our respective countries.

I have read several posts by some users - even moderators - about Greece vs. Turkiye. How a certain side would beat other side, etc... Of course making such missions is possible, noone is setting any boundries to noone. Its everyones own free will, but the proper way would be as I described on the above, again in my H.O.

My best regards, and a desire for peace in everyone's own homelands and peace in whole world. Salutations from Turkiye, Istanbul.

We dont hate greeks, and I am sure sensible greeks dont hate us. Besides we are talking about ideal world peace, then hating another nation whatever the reason is lies in contrast to the very idea.

Its really interesting, theres a common guessing in the world about greeks and turks hate each other. Theres no hate, at least I speak for our side.

To be honest the Greek Guard/Turk Guard contact I experienced within the two UN tours I did on Cyprus was not hate. More funny banter.

For instance. Greek Soldier would stand on his Observation Post shout over to the Turk Soldier to get his attention and then proceed to do as many press-ups as he could and lay down a challenge. Turk Soldier would then return with doing as many press-ups as he could on top of his OP. UN would step in before it escalated and got out of hand.

MMMS we called it. Mediterranean Macho Man Syndrome.

I also experienced some friendly exchanges from both sides of the buffer zone.

Turks watch the Greeks, Greeks watch the Turks. UN watches them both. Greeks and Turks watch the UN.

Tension yes. Hate no. Not in my experience.

Strangest thing was walking past a Greek OP and hearing “Alright mate, you’re a south’ern (south east England) regiment aint yah?†from a Greek Londoner who visited his family in Cyprus and got caught by the draft!

This magical game always seemed to me a perfect platform for simulating Cyprus or at least a tiny Cyprus. You know, Ofp's island concept was such a revolutionary freedom for gamers. This would be really spectacular visually. On the other hand, we now think that making a Turkish vs. Greek mod for ofp is not sensible. As a Greek friend of mine said it is still an open wound. But the real problem is regarding the representation phenomenon. As Turks, we think such mod in such gameplay would hurt both Turkish and Greek people concerning history. Of course this is a game but sides here are not fictitious and both NATO members. So Turkish vs. Greek concept is not sensible. However don't worry, we have big plans for ArmA. I promise, you will see Turkish soldiers at work. You will play Turkish Mod to kick its "separatist enemies".

Of course not. smile_o.gif There is no reason to hate. Greeks are our ally, our neighbours. I have Greek friends. We respect each other. Turkish TV shows are being watched in Greece and we like Greek music. It's very similar to Aegean Turkish musical sound. We have many common points as nations.

When I was there last summer I got lost in Nicosia looking for the border gate. I stopped and asked two pissed off looing Cypriot soldiers where I was. Their English was basic but they pointed me in the right direction. They were indeed wearing that US BDU camo but it was more a mismatch of sorts. They looked like shit to be honest.

One thing of note was the Massive Turkish flag painted on a hillside which was visible for a long time as we drove up the motorway to Lefkosia. Right kick in the balls to the Cypriots I thought, having to look at that every day.

We never did find the border gate. I did go across once or twich in 1991 but I was only 11. I remember the food was great and Shellsuits were cheap as chips.
