Hockey112 0 Posted February 5, 2005 Hey. I'm going to Normandy this summer, anyone have any tips what I should have a look at?? (I mean WW2 thingys) Thank you!
thisismyrifle 0 Posted February 5, 2005 Yep if ur a pommy go to Aromarch (I think that's how it's spelt). It's the site of the british port they used floating pontoons to offload all their kit. Allos up the hill from the big museam by the beach is a good 360 movie theate. The Americian war cemetry is allso a must, and it is interesting to then go to the german cemetrys, it is really depressing to see how they are all buried in mass graves. . bonko the sane 2 Posted February 5, 2005 ask for a brochure at some tourism department, theres tons of very good museums, bunkers etc etc. The museum at St.Mere L'eglise is excellent, and so is the Resistance museum, but i cant remember where its at. edit: speaking of cemetaries, the german cemetary in Normandy is something to see, they gave the germans a small plot of land to bury their dead, so in a really small space they buried thousands in a monument that is a masterpiece of architecture. Billabong81 0 Posted February 5, 2005 St. Mere Eglise is a must if you are American. All the artifacts and museums and shops there will blow you away. Going to all the little museums behind the beaches was interesting as well, there is a cool one right behind Omaha. Have fun on your trip .
commando9903 0 Posted February 6, 2005 I was there a few summers ago. Be sure to go to the large allied graveyard with all the crosses. Also visit all the landing beaches, omaha was the best imo. arromanches is also good as when the tides out you can walk out among the remains of the mulberry harbour. All the locations have good museums.Be sure to visit pointe du hoc too, although I think they shut off part of it for safety reasons, well they had when I was there. Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted February 7, 2005 Caen is a nice city, you should have a look. There is lots to see in the area and you shouldnt focus only on WWII sites! Have been there many times (Cabourg) and I know of one museum in Caen (Memorial Museum of Caen ) that has some nice WWII related stuff! http://www.memorial-caen.fr/portail_gb/hp/hp.asp BTW, does anyone know the bridge mission in Call of duty? Well here you got the original ;)

Well here you got the original ;)[im]http://www.memorial-caen.fr/portail_gb/decouverte/im_galerie/D08_big.jpg[/img] Yep, Pegasus Bridge. Maybe one of the most famous bridges of war, which kind of funny considering it's size .

ran 0 Posted February 7, 2005 Only going to Normandy ? France is quite large you know and I know that if I came from as far as you, I would rentabilize my plane ticket and profite of the occasion to go a little bit more to the south ... why not spending a couple of days in Paris or wandering around the Chateaux de la Loire ? Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted February 7, 2005 because Paris is a tourist rip off. Never seen a capital that is so seperated: districts for the french, and districts for the tourists. I lived there for nearly a year, have family over there and my sister is married to a parisian and settled there, BUT I had a tough time integrating! If you want to get in touch with the "real" France then go to bordeaux, marseille or whatever.. but stay away from Paris!

Naturally it became a tourist's haven but it's one of the if not the most beautifull capital in the world. Paris is a world apart from the rest of France. No not only Normandy. You see I'm gonna drive through the most of europe down to Lido di Jesolo near Venice.. Stay there 2 weeks and head north, going to Paris and Disneyland and then off to the coast of Normandy. Then it'll be pretty much home to Norway.
ran 0 Posted February 8, 2005 Why Dysneyland ... it's so overdone and americanish (and costly too ) ... If you want a theme park, you could go to the Futuroscopeoar rom where I live ... (It needs quite a few more visitors to climb up the slippery slope of bankrupcy héhéhé). Or in place of Cinderella's castle, why not visiting the Loire castles ... (much more interesting IMO, but if you have children with you it will most likely bore them to death). Loire castles Or if you prefer something more how can I say ... entertaining than say old rocks, you have the Puy du Fou theme park which is mainly focused on medieval stuff.
