barret 0 Posted January 12, 2002 I think that for multiplayer on dedicated servers, they should have some thing that would download the addons as they download the missions so for those who didn't know that a server required an addon they didn't have would'nt have to worry
Gamer 10 Posted January 12, 2002 some off the addons are 1+mb ... Just think for a second how long the load up is just to DL the map.... It would be faster for the peeps w/o the addon to DL it on thier own I kringe at the thought of having to wait 20-25 mins for a 56ker to DL a file that should only take him 5 minutes on his own
tlx 0 Posted January 12, 2002 Yes it already takes some time when ppl need to download missions on a slow connection. Think of 20 ppl downloading Kegety's Winter Addon
Iax 0 Posted January 13, 2002 I think it should auto-download. I mean whole maps, have been downloading to all the quake series of games. and I just checked, the half-life maps are 5 megs+, and they all auto-download.
Hudson 0 Posted January 13, 2002 Even if you did download the addon with the mission it dosent do any good until you restart OFP. Addons folder is checked at game launch. Would be nice if it would have been made that way though.
-=-DUNEE-=- 0 Posted January 14, 2002 Actually, I'd just like to know what extensions are installed / required AND where is it that I can get them. This way I will not enter a game where the map is 700k [1] [2], causing needless pain to my fellow players while they wait for me to d/l the thing, only to find out I don't have #doohickey installed, causing me to crash to the desktop and leaving them to fend for their lives in the pool with the other bunch of unwashed gamespyers. Phew. [1] MP maps should not be too large in the first case. I don't want to download a large map to see some fancy intro or to listen to someone bark at me in German [3]. Mind you, there was this map with a chopper and a Jimmy Hendrix tune playing while we were being transported to the battlefield... [2] I'm on a 56k and still enjoy MP. [3] obDisclaimer: Nothing against Germans, it's an example of a language I don't speak. Hey, my granma's German. [4] Infinite loop. Run away, run away! R. Gerschwarzenge 0 Posted January 14, 2002 Oh great. Now I'm stuck in your infinite loop.
WhoCares 0 Posted January 14, 2002 Sorry, please no auto-DL. Up today, I use only official addons. The reason is, that unofficial addons cause sometimes strange behaviours within OFP and some Addons can't run in parallel. I wan't to be in full control, when I screw up my installation However, there are some interesting things around or in work, that might change my mind in this like Kegetys Winter or Goetterfunkes Dune - but still I don't want a auto-DL. wkr WhoCares
FetishFool 0 Posted January 16, 2002 Auto-Download of addons could screw a person's OPF, anyways. That's why the OFPEditingCenter needs everyone to put tags onto their downloads. Addons like Kegetys old Object files screw with most addons. But some people and their servers use all the old Object files. So autodownload might give everyone FADE. Mister Frag 0 Posted January 16, 2002 It won't trigger FADE, but it can certainly mess up OFP in other ways and cause bizarre symptoms like parachutes that change into BMPs etc.
Chris Death 0 Posted January 16, 2002 There are official addons and unofficial addons. If you are missing an addon, then there are two possible reasons: 1 - you are missing an official addon (you should have gone for it earlier, BIS let us know when they're out) 2 - you are missing an unofficial addon (it should everytime be up to the owner of the pc, which unoff.addon should be installed or not) There's no reason to include any addon-auto-dload option by BIS, as they don't have to know about those addons. Another reason to avoid the auto-dload option is: If you are installing an addon (we talk about unoff's now) and your game starts makin strange things (like flying bmp's) you might remember when these strange things started. So you can go for deleting the addon and sort that problem in easy way. If you are auto-dloading, you might not be able to find out this easy. Also the dload time of a mission could really be endless, as already written above. It would be ok, if you could see a list of required addons of the actually running mission, before you join the server, so that you can go for them before you enter.
