US Coast Guard tried helping...those are the remains of a Seahawk. The crew made it fortunately.

600,000 litres of heavy petroleum have left the wreck already!

Full story here!

The environment has barely recovered from the Exxon Valdez spill, now they have to face the next disaster

crazy_o.gif I hope clean-up methods have improved in the last 15yrs and that the impact on the local environment will be less severe than last time.

God. How hard did it hit some rocks to do that to it!?

Hope they find a way to get most of it up before it gets worse.

I am supprised only a few of the crew of the ship where lost. With that i would expect alot more.

considering the mass of a fully loaded ship...a small hit is a very big hit sad_o.gif

and you would be surprised at the terrible condition the vast majority of tankers are kept, thats why they sail under poor, easily corruptable countries flags, my father worked in shipyards for 40 years and ive seen boats that had their hulls down to 1 or less inches thick due to wear and tear.

it makes me very angry this sort of crap really...just because the ship owner doesnt want to pay an extra buck, millions of lifes will be affected.

dunno if this is the case, it could be a engine malfunction or such, but by norm its a drunk captain or a ship that shouldnt be allowed to set to sea that causes this sort of thing...BASTARDS.

I saw something on the news at work a while ago but I thought it was something on the Exxon Valdez, not a new story.

Wow, that sucks. Hopefully they've got some new tricks up their sleeve since the Valdez.

How does a supertanker manage to split itself in half?

It's basicly a thin foil container and if the tanks get's empty it will break because of the waves as easy as you crush a soda can. So imagine the mid tank section empty while the ends or still full and heavy what will happen.

Yep, that's correct. The mass of the ship including cargo keeps the ship together. That's why oiltankers always carry cargo/load. When it's emptied for oil they replace the cargo with water.

The problem with sharp objects such as minor reefs etc. could largely be avoided if they build the tankers with a "dobbel hull" - something that is discussed in Norway because of the worlds harshest coastal climate. We've had lots of major accidents involving oiltankers and our coastal wildlife have suffered some grave effects from it.

However, when tankers and large cargo ships brake up it's usually because of "stressed materials" and week points in the construction.

Fry: What's happening?

Zoidberg: All 6,000 hulls have been breached.

Fry: Oh, the fools! If only they'd built it with 6,001 hulls! When will they learn?
