What should I do?

Recommended Posts

Currently, at Wendy's, I'm being paid at a rate of 6.75$ an hour. I'm earning one of the lowest salaries at my workplace(next to a colleage of mine who's earning 6.70$) and I am one of the few cooks.

It's a matter of what I should do. While I do not feel offended, or any sort of disrespect, I beleive its an illegal act based on the fact that the minimum is about 6.85-7.15 (depending on age). I'm not that materialistic, so an extra 10 cents means little. I do not depend on my wage, nor do I have to yet pay taxes(17 years old). I'm part time, only about two times a week.

But at the same time, isn't this illegal for a company to do? I'm afraid of doing or saying anything, mainly because I love work so much. I know so many people, meet many, talk, have fun, and I simply love the people I work with. I freely buy gifts for my friends, I occasionally go out and buy a small bag of chocolate bars for everyone at work(any left overs go over to my family, my brother and his girlfriend mainly). Christmas is coming up, and I already spent over the limit (40$, a Siberian tiger teddy bear thing with a nice tear shaped cubic cerconia(hell if I know how to spell it)). Unfortunatly, I havn't met the owner of the resturaunt but I hope to meet him at an upcoming party.

Should I just ignore this problem, seeing as it dosn't affect me in any way? Otherwise, not doing anything means that I am willfully holding back information that might lead to something illegal. As well, I am wondering what sort of effect this could have on future employments if I do choose to say something about the situation. What will future companies think of an employee who rats out on something as simple as ten cents? While I doubt anything drastic will happen to me, I do not want the resturaunt closing or coming under new management, as well as bring hostility towards me from fellow employees.

Call your union representative right away.... wait, what union?  biggrin_o.gif

I say you should just take the 10 cents owed to you per hour by stealing stuff from Wendy's.  A packet of ketchup cost about 4 cents, so for every hour you work, you should pocket 2 and a half packets of ketchup.  Remember, take only 2 and a half packets, no more (don't want look greedy), so you must open one packet, squeeze out half of the ketchup, take the amount that's left along with 2 full packets, and there's compensation for the 10 cents that is owing you for that one hour of work.

Well, you could drop out of school....

Actually, this comes as a surprize to me. I never knew minimum wages for students were different, and that does stink. My first sumer job I earned  $9.00 an hour, and my first permanent part time job shortly after started me off at $7.15, back when the minimum wage was $6.85 (still at the same place and I'll be making $10.50 in a month ($12.10 on Sundays) - part of me really wonders why I even bother with college :P)

Talk to your boss, stating that you believe that you deserve to get paid at least minimum wage for the work you do. (This is totally absurd for someone to pay UNDER minimum wage!) Be polite and just ask for a raise. Make sure you are right about the min.wage first.

EDIT: Oh yeah, 6.7 for students. hehe Another Free nation. So never mind.

Think y'all are going a bit overboard with this given that he likes his job and was merely worried about the principle of being illegally underpaid - which he isn't.

6.70?

I keep hearing different numbers, guees those ones are right.

Student Minimum Wage

Jan 1995 $6.40 per hour

Feb 2004 $6.70 per hour

Feb 2005 $6.95per hour

Feb 2006 $7.25per hour

Feb 2007 $7.50per hour

Guess I was wrong about the situation. I thought I heard in class that the MW was around 6.85+, but its apparent they were mistaken.

Oh well, C'est la vie

Whilst I sympathise with your situation, it is unfortunately too off-topic for off-topic. I would advise you to go to your local equivalent of a Citizens Advice Bureau for further help and information.
