Quote[/b] ]that's not ofp, that is a big battlefield

Are you forgetting? In relation to any other tactial FPS out there at the time compared to OFP...

Ofp was a "BIG BATTLEFIELD". Ghost Recon? That was rainbow six in the woods. Delta Force? It had nothing on OFP. Both small potatoes compared to OFP's overall simulation potential. There were always games that looked better than OFP for it's time. However that's not what made OFP special. You had a chance (finally) to experience combat on a much wider scale than every previously experienced. With the exception of a few precursors like Wargasm or Muzzle Velocity, that did some things right but the technology just wasn't there the way it was when OFP was finally released.

Yes you could make missions that were similarly limited as compared to Ghost Recon or Delta Force. That wasn't where OFP's strength was rooted. Doing a side by side comparison at the time. You'd have OFP losing out because it's visuals weren't as strong. The developers simply had other priorities.

That's ofp's claim to fame. It's a broad scale combat simluator. This is simply taking it to the next level. The industry is stuck in a rut of making shitty squad based tactial shooters, and OFP was one of the few to break the mold. I think it's best to run with this and make it even better.

Quote[/b] ]2ghz seems to be very light to simulate 1000 ai

Face it buddy. Nobody here will get away with playing OFP2 on a current PC if it's in fact going to be a good game. If making OFP2 in your opinion means keeping the limitations of OFP 1 with nicer visuals... we already have that. It's called: "The user addon community inundating itself with strictly high detail addons".

That in my opinion is not what OFP was truly intended for. That is pretty much turning OFP into every other goddamned tactical FPS out there right now.

Just to persuade you for the cold war NATO v Soviet Union mission. Imagine

A dark sunrise in 1985 and you are in high alert with your platoon. In a trench. All of a sudden a massive bombarment starts of your postion. you take cover. When the bombardment finished you get up and see a mushroom cloud far in the distance and you hear the radio chattering about invasions of east europe but your cut short by a company of mechanised infantry attacking your lightly held position. You see AT missiles streaking into BMPs as you try and hold the position. Eventually you get the retreat command and you engage a tactical fallback. The AI covers you as you move and you cover them all the way back to HQ where you hear about whats happened as you see jets streaking overhead...

Now wouldnt that make the perfect game? set it against the soviets at the peak of their time and you would have the greatest and ONLY true modern warfare game that would still have enough action and realism.

i would like to see it modern like not before 1990 and not after 2010..

Same here. I like firing and flying weapons i am familiar with. Not a tazer x-1000b module 2 with a 15000v battery.

I'm fine with anything between 1980 and the present day.

One of the other advantages that OFP has is that the story line and target models were based around the late cold war, something that nobody else really touched. Do we really want another WW2 or Nam game? It's one thing to make excellent mods after the fact for the interested community, it's a whole different issue to make a WW2 themed game because you want to ride the BF1942 wake.

Do we want a bastardized mutt of all the other games out there rolled into one? No, I don't think so. Would it be nice to have WW2 and Nam stuff? Sure it would, but if BIS focuses in on that they could run a great risk of vision sellout for me-too-ism.

There's plenty of material that hasn't been touched, like a Resistance-style campaign set in Budapest 1956, Afghanistan 1979-89, the Sub-Saharan African wars like what the Brushfires mod is doing, and so on.

While I like the idea of a "Red Storm Rising" theme (it would be cool if they did it as a two-sided dynamic coop'able campaign), there's so much sci-fi writeups on it that it could get messy.

It seemed to me the "normal" evolution of OFP would have been the modelisation of Central Europe, with accurate maps to simulate the "so feared" WWIII as it was "expected" to be in the 80's by some. The engine would have allowed managing battalions and supports, with a finer aircraft dynamics and some more specialised troops including NBC features.

There would be so much to do with that...

So long as the standard units are of the modern battlefield, I really couldn't care less where the campaign happens.

BIS could make an exact copy of the current campaigns for all I care.

It's the new engine capabilities that interest me most. If there's a nice, new (but believable) campaign, then in my eyes, it's just an added bonus to the marvel that the new engine will hopefully be. smile_o.gif

But on the subject of campaigns: I would REALLY enjoy a Korean campaign, (much like Falcon 4.0's brilliant campaign, only complete from all aspects, ground, sea and air), because of the mix of units that would be in theatre. All that the east has on offer vs. all that the west (via the U.N), has.

ozanzac drips with drool as he salivates over the possibilities a Korean campaign could entail.

Codemaster asks what we prefer in this list.

So i imagine assembly with BIS and Codemaster:

You can do that? Yes

This? Yes

This too? Yes

Coffee? Sorry this we can't biggrin_o.gif

So now imagine a scenario for a RTS-God-Sim-Fight-STU-MMP game.

Bon courage codemaster biggrin_o.gif biggrin_o.gif

Seriously, I would'nt give a crap about other time periods.

I would focus only on present day war. That way, there is more for the Developers to program into the game, giving mod makers a more in depth modding capability, and letting them create Vietnam and WW2 themed mods.

It's only what will work best.

An example would be Battlefield 1942.

There were no helicopters back then. So the developers never needed any codding for a helicopter.

While mod makers WERE able to create helicopters in the game, they did'nt work and handle very well.

I think it's best to give us a modern day, or a future year 2010 themed game, with future technology being planned by the military AS WE SPEAK.

This gives modders more to work with.

Agreed. One thing I wish is a campaign playable from both sides, as flightsims have been doing for years (EEAH, EECH, IL2). And even better is all missions can be played in coop games.

In that context a China vs US conflict could also work very well. Perhaps not as balanced as a US vs CCCP war scenario, but a lot more adequate than US vs N.Korea.

Clancy's got another fun one in "The Bear and the Dragon" where you have old Russian reserve divisions assisted by the US rolling back a modern Chinese incursion into Siberia. But the lack of a strong Yankee theming would not help sales in the US.

So true. A sci-fi theme would kill the game.

OFP is about using tactics and weapon systems as you expect in reality. Things are not 100% relalistic, but at least you know than an Apache will perform more or less as expected, and a AP round will do the job is meant to do. That's what helps balancing the game in a natural way.

Technology from the year 2100 would only open Pandora's box and kill the balance through an infinite succession of silly new weapons, counter-weapons, counter-counter-weapons, etc. Maybe good material for a pre-pubertal arcade console game, but nothing that fits OFP's ethos.

Up to BIS to decide if they want to come to another Clancy/RedStorm redneck stuff or bring their initial idea to its climax. biggrin_o.gif

Thats what i think they should do, coming up with a whole new fictitional story based on the 80's cold war.

Then they could make a full expantion based on the Russian/Afghanistan war in the 80's too for diversification.

With the improved game engine, features and graphics i could see a great new game coming out of this.
