Smaller Models = Larger Maps?

Recommended Posts

Remember those addons that had small versions of soldiers and jeeps?

Wouldn't it be possible to make all soldier, vehicle and object models this small (scale to each other) on an ordinary 12km x 12km map, resulting in a larger playing area?

Would you be able to tweak the configs to make the experience just as real?

If you had a 25km x 25km DEM (digital elevation model) you could shrink it down to a 12.4km x 12.4km map, then decrease the size of all of your objects and units by 50%, tweaking their configs appropriately.

Would it work?

I'm thinking that the only noticeable difference would be that the ground textures would be less detailed and you would have to have 50% fewer objects on the map to prevent lag.

I'm pretty sure that creating the smaller models would start to create problems with floating point precision or at least O2 point positions etc. And you would have a variety of size offset problems multiplied in game, like vehicles which floated 5cm over the ground might float seemingly 10cm over.

It would become such a clusterfuck it is unbelievable, as it is now all functions and sizes are in meters, nice and organized.

And really, why do it, there is no specific limit it would break.

Yeah, I can think of a bunch of scripting problems, aside from what bn880 said. But the main question is: why? I've never played a mission that used even half of an entire island's area, so why would you need twice as much?

Only thing I could think of would be to make some sort of Red Hammer/Warcraft style RTS mod.

And what about hills, WRP tool (or anyother terrain making program) can't handle that small elevation chanches ( tounge_o.gif Still don't know how to write it).
