MEDICUS 0 Posted October 8, 2004 ... with a 3 year old game your luckey to find a mission that doesn't use some addon ... ... and if you find one runing on a server, you'll have to start you game mostly without any addons or you'll get kicked couse of the ckeck-files (cheater-hysteria?) ... Sorry for that .. was a little bit OT. BTT: In my oppinion you have 2 options: 1. You start your game chaste, without any addons and play the (also really nice) missions useing only the BIS-addons or 2. you try to enter an addon-server by downloading all the needed addons (via OFW-Watch or Serverv-addon-packages) and play there. But i think there is no need for some kind of rules you are trying to set up here for the server-admins and/or mission-makers. Just keep in mind that these guys are spending their freetime to maintain 3rd! MfG MEDICUS

benu 1 Posted October 8, 2004 I know those words sound harsh, but we LOVE to play with addons. So why abstain from that because of some new player who might never play again on my server anyway? I don't think i overlooked anything regarding addons, we use lots of addons since we got our first ofp server and know the issues about it. I remember long hours with new players, checking if they got all addons in the right version and troubleshooting the causes that made them drop from the server. It was hell. All that is gone now thanks to ofp watch. I put the adress of our homepage into the servername, so people notice the server in any gamebrowser and are willing to play there can always go to the homepage and forum if they got problems. My ICQ/AIM/MSN/Mail contact data is also on there. And i wrote a tut about how to get and configure ofp watch. We got teamspeak where everyone can connect without password (although channels are moderated), and we will help people there too (although at "premium time" the help will most likely be "visit the homepage" or "ask me again tomorrow"). We have our addons in modfolders on the server too, so every player can see in the gamebrowser that the server uses addons. And addon missions are not tough either. All the addons it needs are in the mission.sqm. The only problem is when the addonmaker decides to use classnames that have nothing in common with the pboname. Everything else can be found with google or some ofp sites, ofp.info comes to mind. I am just now working on a script that extracts needed addons from missions and classes from addons and compares the needed addons in a mission to those installed on our server. When i put winter kodiak on the server yesterday i was looking for missions on this island and downloaded the mission pack from SES server (which seems to be out of business, which is really sad, as SES and Zeus are/were my favorite servers) and had 5 working missions at once. Three other can be made to work on my server by installing one additional addon for each. And i do know where to get eg cwk_zodiac, if i did not already have it on my harddrive. Rune 0 Posted October 10, 2004 I'm not sure exactly what category I fit into; CS-flaming or not...but since my opinion is so valued in this thread I must reply I never played CS, but I laughed very hard about it claiming to be realistic after I saw it played...I could be wrong of course if real life anti-terrorist team members and terrorists prefer their exciting day jobs to being NBA-stars

SpecOp9 0 Posted October 12, 2004 MISSION MAKERS 1) If you are using addons in your missions consider what it is that makes a mission good - it is rarely the addons... Incorrect 2) When considering putting in a certain addon, ask yourself 'will this mission work without it?'. If it will then take it out. Or just provide an easy way for the downloader to get the addons required. Like a Readme 3) When considering putting in an addon which is not strictly needed - make the mission without it, release it without it...THEN put in the addon to play the mission with your friends... I do this sometimes...But remember that's just more work from the Mission maker, and mission makers are lazy, including myself. I wish it was more fun now that I been in th Editor for a few years. 4) If an addon is absolutely unavoidable, think about wether the whole mission revolves around it...if it does, odds are your mission is not as good as you think it is... either get a better plot or don't release it. Most of the time, Missions with Addons usually to revolve around the addon. 5) If you do use addons, write PROPER lists of them and where they can be found. Make sure that this list can be read in the mission description on downloaded-sites and in readme file. Everybody does, it's just the downloader is too frickin lazy to look at the readme and download the damn files. 6) If you do use addons, make sure the fact that addons are required shows in the mission name. pointless if you have a readme, and takes too much room of the actual mission title. 7) If you do use addons, try to use addons from an easily describable group of addons/mod team - such as BAS/CoC/FDF. This will speed up finding them and make listing the addons on a certain server easier in the ingame browser. Thats what mod folders are for

Placebo 29 Posted October 13, 2004 Just wanted to add something.... People have been asked politely a number of times, on a number of occasions to refrain from making accusations of cheating on the forums, we do not of course condone cheating, it is a vile and reprehensible plague to multiplayer gaming, however it is all too easy to make false accusations as there is no real way of proving 100% that someone has been cheating. As people were clearly incapable of processing polite requests to stop making cheating accusations, here's an impolite threat, from now on anyone who makes an accusation of cheating will receive a warning level increase of 2 and 1 month post restriction. If anyone feels so strongly that they have caught someone cheating and have proof that they must tell someone they are welcome to send me the information and I will look at it. As always any information about cheating, cheats themselves, hacks, anything of that nature should be sent to me at placebo@bistudio.com and they will be investigated
