Snow Snow Snow

Recommended Posts

Hi, I was thinking would it be possible to make snow that isn't just a hard surface? Imagine crawling or waiting and hiding on the ground in deep snow...like a mini trench. In reality you sink into snow...could this be possible ingame?

Would that be like walking in OFP water?

By crumble I mean it isnt a solid surface, the snow landscape at the moment is just hard ground ,but when you walk in thick snow you fall into it and could hide.

Imagine the ambush, loads of guys appearing for beside the road...oh man that would be good

Well... I don't know about hiding in snow.... I have never walked in snow with military gear (only 19,5 kg's of gear). But I didn't "fall" into the snow, I was about knee down into it. And at one point the snow got up to my waist.... But you can't "hide" in it, you would panic quite quickly.

if it goes up to your waist or even your knees you could lay down and hide in it!

Not without getting extremely cold, which would effect your aiming and combat effectiveness. It's not even possible.

Actually US Arctic Survival teaches that snow is the hardest environment to fight in, because you move more slowly, you're cold, and your US M82 Woodland field jackets and BDUs don't quite blend in too well.

And anyways it can't be done in the OFP engine anyways so...

No.

If you mean footprints in snow, then that's already done - check out the various snow islands.

Err.... Yes, but you wouldn't be able to get up very well (you would be surrounded by snow).... And besides, huge man-sized imprints in the snow would give the enemy some clue as to where the enemy could be hiding....

A little note about winter warfare (arctic/subarctic) from a swedish perspective.

As someone already stated you tend to move and react slower in a snowy and cold enviroment.

But with proper training and equipment you can conduct almost any military activity in cold and snowy weather, at least down to about -30 to -40 degrees Celsius. Any colder than that and machinery becomes hard to get started and equipment break down more easily.

About hiding in the snow: as long as you insulate yourself from the snow, for exampel by putting a sleeping bag or blanket between you and the snow it actually helps to keep you (relatively) warm, at the very least it protects you from the wind.

For an observation post, you would usually dig a hole in the snow, cover the bottom with something to lie/sit on, then cover the hideout with a white IR-protective camo-net.

Such an hideout could also be used for an ambush or as a machine gun nest.

I have done my share of crawling/skiing/walking in the snow during my military service in the Swedish Army.

I served in an engineer battalion stationed in the northern part of Sweden, we frequently trained north of the arctic circle.

As far as snow in Flashpoint goes, I believe that you could do as nephilim stated and use same trick as with the swimming pool. You probably could use the rotor wash scripts from some helo to simulate blowing snow and so on...

Thank you, yeah I mean I've seen an ex-SAS guy stay in very cold temperatures for a long time, granted he wasn't in snow he was in a tent, on snow but he wasn't that prepared and he survived it.

wow_o.gif can u get snow but falling form sky in ofp?

I'm assuming you mean:

Can you get snow falling from the sky in OFP?

The answer is yes, both Kegetys' Winter Nogojev and FDF mod have a snowfall script and game logic for them, respectively.
