Cold war songs

Recommended Posts

(returning to the original OFP theatre)

Just found it while browsing my records:

Billy Joel -- Leningrad

Quote[/b] ]Viktor was born in the spring of '44

And never saw his father anymore

A child of sacrifice, a child of war

Another son who never had a father after Leningrad

Went off to school and learned to serve the state

Followed the rules and drank his vodka straight

The only way to live was drown the hate

A Russian life was very sad

And such was life in Leningrad

I was born in '49

A cold war kid in McCarthy time

Stop 'em at the 38th Parallel

Blast those yellow reds to hell

And cold war kids were hard to kill

Under their desk in an air raid drill

Haven't they heard we won the war

What do they keep on fighting for?

Viktor was sent to some Red Army town

Served out his time, became a circus clown

The greatest happiness he'd ever found

Was making Russian children glad

And children lived in Leningrad

But children lived in Levittown

And hid in the shelters underground

Until the Soviets turned their ships around

And tore the Cuban missiles down

And in that bright October sun

We knew our childhood days were done

And I watched my friends go off to war

What do they keep on fighting for?

And so my child and I came to this place

To meet him eye to eye and face to face

He made my daughter laugh, then we embraced

We never knew what friends we had

Until we came to Leningrad

Ah bastler, you drag me into this sentimental Billy Joel stuff. Most of his songs were great.

What about the Sting song? That one is even more famous. I am sure most of you know what I am talking about!

"I hope the russians love their children too" ... that line always made me shiver

aaahhh Sting's Russians

I prefer London Callling by Clash tounge_o.gif different style though smile_o.gif (and it's french "equivalent" : Paris brűle-t'il by Bérurier Noir)

Red Army Blues - Waterboys

( about the Red Army and American Army meeting for the first time during WW2 somewhere in Germany, and how they all were equal )

Yes, this is one of my favourites and I thought about this one, too.

One song that comes into my mind (or better a whole album) is "The Wall" (Another Brick in the Wall Part II the most famous song from it) from Pink Floyd; I always thought that they meant the Berlin Wall, but reading the song texts the seem to sing about an abstract wall.

@ vektorboson

Don't wanna be a smart ass but I think it's something about kids and them hitting walls set up by adults.

Just my 2 cents

What about Megadeth stuff, theres stuff about the Polaris ICBM (i think), plus the name Megadeth is derived from "mega-death", which means 1 million deaths, used as a unit in reference to nuclear warfare. Check out the albums (if you like thrash metal or speed metal) Peace Sells...But Whos Buying (1986):

Or Rust in Peace (from 1990 but still has cold war related themes in some songs):

Yes I do have to pimp good heavy metal everywhere I go. biggrin_o.gif

Depends on whether you only mean "Another Brick in the Wall Part II" or you mean the whole album. They talk in the whole album of "the" wall, always in a different sense; even the wall as in "Another Brick in the Wall Part I" seems to be different from Part II.

Another song coming into my mind: Frankie goes to Hollywood's "Two Tribes" (because of the video!)

Land of confusion, Genesis. Do you remember the Spitting image video ? Reagan wanted to call for the nurse at the end of the video and pressed the wrong button biggrin_o.gif

Hey I thought of Billy Joel when I saw this thread too, but I was thinking of that song where he names all the names of people and events.

99 Luftballons. Reminds me of how close we came to the brink of pushing the button  a few times after some false alarm.

I know it's not a literal translation from the German version, but the message pretty much stays the same:

Quote[/b] ]You and I in a little toy shop

Buy a bag of balloons with the money we've got

Set them free at the break of dawn

Til one by one, they were gone

Back at base bugs in the software

Flash the message, something's out there

Floating in the summer sky

99 red balloons go by

99 red balloons

Floating in the summer sky

Panic bells it's red alert

There's something here from somewhere else

The war machine springs to life

Opens up one eager eye

Focusing it on the sky

Where 99 red balloons go by

99 Decision street

99 ministers meet

To worry, worry, super scurry

Call the troops out in a hurry

This is what we've waited for

This is it boys, this is war

The president is on the line

As 99 red balloons go by

99 knights of the air

Ride super high tech jet fighters

Everyone's a super hero

Everyone's a Captain Kirk

With orders to identify

To clarify, and classify

Scramble in the summer sky

99 red balloons go by

99 dreams I have had

In every one a red balloon

It's all over and I'm standing pretty

In this dust that was a city

If I could find a souvenir

Just to prove the world was here

And here is a red balloon

I think of you, and let it go

That one can be found on "Stormfront", too.

Well, "99 Luftballons" by Nena and "Russians" by Sting come to mind first. And yeah the Genesis song was great, too. Of the three I'd probably select "Russians" as the one song I associate most with the cold war. And then there's always that little tune at the end of 'Dr. Strangelove - or how I learned to love the bomb': "We'll meet again,..."

<s>I know it's not a literal translation from the German version, but the message pretty much stays the same:</s>

Quote[/b] ]Can you spare a minute for me

Then I'll sing a song for you

of 99 toy ballons

on their way to the sky [resp. horizon]

Perhaps you think of me

Then I'll sing a song for you

of 99 toy ballons

And what results of such things...

99 toy ballons

on their way to the sky

were regarded as ufos from outer space

therefore a general sent in

a flying squadron

to confirm the alert

But there were

only 99 toy ballons

99 jet pilots

Each a great warrior

believed to be Captain Kirk

created a big firework

The neighbours failed to see

and felt pissed off

But in the sky they were only shooting

at 99 toy ballons

99 war ministers

match and petrol cans

believed to be clever

scented prey

cried 'war' but only tried to seize power

man, who ever thought

things go such a way

'cause of 99 toy ballons

'cause of 99 toy ballons

99 toy ballons

99 years of war

no winner left

no war ministers anymore

no jet pilots too

today I'm cruising

see a world in ruins

found a toy ballon

think of you and let it go

Ok, lyrics should now be literal... biggrin_o.gif

Goldfinger did a cover, yes, but Nena sung it in english too. Those are her lyrics.
