Terrain detail - wow!

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the precision.

That is good that every players will had the same level of terrain Low in the same multiplayer session

As i can imagine the pain of people without a high end system if the server with High setting forced them to such a level of terrain.

most bridges in addon islands fuck up when you put the terrain detail on (very) high.

i once made a beautifull firing range map, had a rifle range, sniper range , AT range, pistol range , mortar range....

then we went and played it on medium settings... so far for my map... smile_o.gif everything was made in High detail, so in allmost all pits there where bumps covering the targets , lying positions no longer overlooked the targets, etc.... grrrrr

for some reason the jump from "high" terrain detail to "very high" makes the game unplayable. I was getting good fps in "high" but dropped drastically to about 2 fps in "very high". Does this have something to do with the graphics card or the ram? I'm sure the processor isnt the problem as I have a P4 3 ghz

I think it's neither of those two -- I think you are running out of physical memory and causing a lot of swapping to and the pagefile.

I have a 3.06GHz P4, and while going to "very high" does cause a drop in performance, it's not as extreme as what you are experiencing. Just keep Task Manager running iconized while you start OFP, load a mission that causes the performance to drop to 2 fps, then quickly exit and examine the information in the Performance tab.

The Commit Charge Peak is the most virtual memory that was used since you booted, and ideally, this will not have exceeded the amount of physical RAM in your system.

(Useless bit of trivia: I made it to 5000 posts without a single PR! biggrin_o.gif )

hmm..i getting 2 fps on desert island with only one soldier lol tounge_o.gif

i guess the comp wasnt made to handle it. i made sure that it wasnt running any unnecessary background programs.

But what about memory usage? The processor should be plenty fast.

If your system swaps constantly (watch the drive light as you change the direction you are facing in OFP), then you can fix the problem by adding RAM or possibly reorganizing your Addons folder and using the -mod switch.

First of all what are your other settings?

If you try to play with 5000m viewdistance and very high terrain detail it will be unplayable no matter which computer you have.

How much RAM and which gfx-card do you have?

i have a gfx 5200 and 512 mb ram.

view distance settings are the default.

edit: apparently i didnt put the rams in correct pairs. i'll try that and see how the computer does.

edit edit:the comp ran fine for a while, then froze up when i tried to click "options". guess too much for it to handle
