A tool to make odol explorer....

Recommended Posts

I think this maybe the most mature method to take this asit puts the emphasis on the person who wants to modify an addon.

Although an thief could do what he wants in theory this licence would mean if said thief tried to release, all that would have to be done is the orginator to contact the website and report as theft the addon, I have seen addons dissappear when reported as stolen.

It seems the community willl support the originator more than the thief.  Encyption would only turn this the other way around with apparant distrust of the communities ability to support the originator and stop thiefs getting away with this.

I use the word apparant wisley as this may not be the intention.

Also the minute you encypt something it puts a challenge out to those with the knowledge to just decypt it, in the end its just a time delay.

Me and Mr Sniper Skull have a solution. We will simply attach licensing to our work.

For example

"by downloading this addon you hereby agree not to edit the content without obtaining prior permission from the author. In the event of breach of this licence you will be liable to have legal action taken against you for breach of international copyright law"

Of course that will be improved upon, but, yeh.....if you accept the license you have to do what it says. Fair enough huh. wink_o.gif

I would just love seeing you try to apply a damn shrinkwrap license on somebody living outside US, even microsoft cant seem to pull it off. unclesam.gif

Why dont YOU try breaking it and see what happens rock.gif

If you are so doubtful of international copyright law protecting us, then why do you support ODOL Explorer?

Oh and i dont live in the US......thank god....

I really fail to see what international copyright laws and dubious EULAs have in common. Copyright is a clear cut case of intellectual property while EULAs are some sort magical contracts that are supposed to be binding with a single mouse click and no witnesses.

And I dont think copyright laws will help with model theft in invidual cases, but the bad rep and flaming will prevent that alone in my opinion.

The problems Microsoft has is pure copying and not getting the money, what is being mentioned here is someone modifying and passing of as their own work.

Believe in the eyes of the law this is quite different.

I would not want to push this style of licence as it does exactly what it says and it tells the community all about it too, and applies across international bounderies.

I do support the tool, but I have nothing to hide, but I also would rather be asked before (although most likely after) anyone modified anything I put time to build. Its all a matter of pride and honesty.

When I said the magic word microsoft I was referring to their EULAs, not copyright issues.

Thats up to the addon maker, but under international copyright law i am protected.

And if i wish to use that protection, thats my choice.

Anyway, i cant see anyone moaning, its not like im legally binding you to shag 10 sheep within a day of downloading the addon, then post the pictures on the forum...... rock.giftounge_o.gif

Its just ensuring permission, which most people here would respect anyway.

I can't belive you guys.... I support the ODOL explorer tool becasue I feel that we can learn from each other's work. However I feel it is the user's responsibility to make use of it in a responsible and respectible manner. If anything its the user of the ODOL explorer who should be held acountable for his / her actions with the tool. And if anything, we shouldn't waste our time with trying to take legal action against such people. Afterall wouldn't it be worth our money if we used it to buy OFP2 instead of a Lawyer? smile_o.gif And anotherthing, in the end GOD will take care of them. Why waste our time? They'll just find another way to de-crypt the files

I think thats the best solution so far. People would still be able to look at the config / model, but they wont be able to steal and publish it.

Not that they could without a license. wink_o.gif

I just dont see the point, if "stealing" the model is already illegal why attach any form of licenses? Its like I would be asked to sign an agreement at the bank door which says I cannot rob the bank.
