Baron Hurlothrumbo IIX 0 Posted April 9, 2004 Hi. I searched for previous topic on this and could not find anything. Does anyone play this game? Apparently its quite like a massively multiplayer online version of OFP. (although simpler.) Just wondering if anyone has played it, and what they thought of it. DracoPaladore 0 Posted April 9, 2004 I havnt played it, but I hear its quite realistic. I've also seen screen shots at @war with updated grahpics soon. Look qit nice.
dinger 1 Posted April 9, 2004 where to start? Well, I knew the dev team back when they were the ones running WarBirds. I followed WW2OL from when it was announced, and was in on the beta. From the beta, it was clear it was gonna be a disaster on release. Release was shortly after OFP 1.0 It was one of the most disastrous releases in the history of MMORPGs. Since then, they've been clawing their way up. I tried it again recently and it didn't catch my interest. Still, I have many fond memories. Of course, for each one of those, I have 20 recollections of walking for 15 minutes only to be shot up by some jerk with a big-ass cannon.
Tex -USMC- 0 Posted April 9, 2004 Not anymore. Back when I did play it, the general consensus was "When everything's clicking in terms of the technical aspects, teamplay, etc, it's incredibly fun". However it just never seemed to click often enough to justify continuing to pay the monthly fee.
Wilco 944 Posted April 9, 2004 WarStory looks amazing so far. http://www.warstory.net Only two screens, but they look so friggin realistic. Edit: Holy Crap! They put up another photo!!!
korax 4 Posted April 9, 2004 Ive tried the 7-day trial offer thing, and I liked it. It wasnt exactly similar to ofp, but did require tense firefights and lots of tactics, using planes and turrets/tanks was hard with the crude controls but you got used to it eventually (you'll NEED a joystick for those things, else its nearly impossible) Ofcourse the best part was that its MMO, and at times you would have 30+ people on each side supporting an attack on a large town, the way you take a town is to capture certain control points by entering them and sitting at a desk for 30 seconds while your friends covered you, and then after you take the building, ally's can spawn in that area. There are ships, trucks, turrets, tanks, planes, and ofcourse infantry, but the one thing that annoyed me most was that you could not get in/out of a vehicle, once you spawned as a truck at a foreward base or camp you would stay in it to the death, however you could transport troops to the frontlines or even tow turrets on the back. Another thing I liked was the "experience" system, if your a trooper who gets a few kills and survives for a certain amount of time, you would get some more experience, and as soon as you reached a certain rank, you can spawn as different infantry types such as sappers or machine gunners. Same goes with planes too, you would'nt have a noobie hogging all the good planes but instead only the more experienced flyers who have been through a battle or two would fly. Basically all this goes on and on, as the Axis and Allied forces have to try and conquer Europe by taking cities one by one, and when one obliterates the opposing force, the map resets and you can choose your side, and go at it again. Â I've played through awesome battles with many people lasting up to 3-4 days all for control of one city, from what I remember the netcode wasnt half bad, so there werent many "lag kills" or people spiking around the place. And yes, you'll need lots of patience for this game! Driving for 20 minutes just to get to a town, then to be blown to bits by a tank isnt exactly time well spent. Colossus 2 Posted April 9, 2004 Not even me have heard of it, so then I'm gone ask a question: Is it released? Or when?
laulau 0 Posted April 9, 2004 me too, never heard of it before. yes it's released for a long time now, 2001. i have looked at the official site and some players' sites and it sounds really interesting. the last campaign lasted 57 days!!!! you can follow the advance of each side on a real time map which shows the front line. Hundreds of cities are modelised... it really sounds good. It's just a shame that there's no demo anymore. If you want to see how it is you have to pay 19,99$. does someone here play this game?? could he tell us if it's worst to try it?

dinger 1 Posted April 9, 2004 Reality check guys: Yeah, it was released at the same time as OFP. It's a MMPOG, so they've been working on it continuously. There are some limitations to it. The comms system is needlessly complicated and difficult for newcomers. You can't leave/bail out of vehicles. The strat system boils down to a rolling spawn point war. If you want a quick fight, then you spawn in a (probably camped) location. If you're looking for a small engagement, you may run into nobody at all. Oh yeah, and it's the Battle of France, about the most exciting campaign in the second world war. The release currently in development is supposed to have things like decent foliage (almost to the quality of OFP), and when they release it, you might be able to wrangle a 7 or 14-day trial. As Tex says, when it clicked, it really clicked. I remember one time sneaking into a churchtower with a K98 and dropping over twenty brits before having to hightail it out of there. Or another time, being the only dude left on a rooftop when a town is overrun, then waging a guerrilla war until relief came (I guess they installed AI to stop that). Or once, rolling out in a PzIII, and, going HD behind a hill crest, spotting a column of 3 British tanks escorting two lorries of grunts down the road along the river Meuse. Tucked into a dell and set up lateral ambush. Popped a round in the front and rear tanks, then just wasted the lot of them. Or flying along in a stuka, buzzing churchtowers, then spotting something moving on a road below. Once over, ID'd as an enemy Bedford with a squad in back. Pull into a hammerhead, and whip around guns hot as the truck runs off the road beelining for a copse of trees. Another pass and it rolls to a stop as the surviving slobs in back bail out. Whip around again for another dose of 7.7 mm. Heck, a couple times I even got a "golden bb" on an overeager CAS fiend. Cool for me, sucked for them. But Ialso remember walking, walking walking. HAnging round in a town for an hour, with nothing happening. Or all those times I was on the receiving end of the kind of stuff mentioned above. It sucks to ride a truck to town and get strafed out the back. Or to take the ten minute ride, only to be killed by an unseen sniper. ANd most infantry missions end with "I think that tank spotted me" Battle of France wasn't known for its effective AT weaponry.

I have not played this MMORPG but you have to agree this could be considered a feature, since it does indeed support so many players and this is more realistic. I personally believe it boils down to how much spare time you have, if you had a lot of time to kill you would probably enjoy that. I know from some OFP missions, some have lasted more than 12h for me.

No way I love long missions but I wouldnt be able to survive longer than 30 minutes Well we survived up to 4h at a time, but used a special "buddy revive" system to respawn each other. If everyone was dead game is over. (you can survive if you take it like actual combat, not a headless chicken run)

hellfish6 7 Posted April 9, 2004 Is warstory.net related to WWIIOL? Is it by the same company?
Tex -USMC- 0 Posted April 9, 2004 My fondest memory from WWIIOL was when myself and about a squad worth of other German players created our very own 20 mile salient into British lines- we finally reached a BEF aerodrome and proceeded to shoot the place up. Good times.
ArchangelSKT 0 Posted April 9, 2004 Is warstory.net related to WWIIOL? Is it by the same company? No not by the same company...not much info on that one though. Guess we`ll hear more under E3 , looks interesting but I don`t know if it is console only and 3rd person? If either I`ll skip that one for sure. About WWII online I haven`t played it, and probably never will to many other games in the mist and so little time
