SpecOp9 0 Posted December 23, 2003 I was reading this life on Mars excerpt on the internet and they had videos of the Beagle 2. Now when I watched this video, I could swear it was something even MORE sci fi than what you see in the movies. Real Player Video -RAM file WinMedia Video - ASX file The video is of the beagle 2, entering the atmosphere in mars, and taking samples to identify if there is life on earth... YOu gotta watch the video, it's pretty crazy.

SpecOp9 0 Posted December 23, 2003 You know, It's great that it landed, but I just wonder how they plan on getting it back to planet earth

Tamme 0 Posted December 23, 2003 They don't?Why would they need to.. Just think how cruel it would be to leave a little dog on Mars
Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted December 23, 2003 it might be a small step for a dog, but a great one for .... (is there an english term for it? ) Dont worry about the dog. Corresponding to my highly reliable german news-sources are the first colony-ships already on their way. the XR-2 Prototype
SpecOp9 0 Posted December 24, 2003 They don't?Why would they need to.. Well it is collecting samples from mars... How can we look at those samples if they are on mars!?!?!? beagle 2 would need to come back to Earth "somehow"
denoir 0 Posted December 24, 2003 The video is of the beagle 2, entering the atmosphere in mars, and taking samples to identify if there is life on earth... The video is a computer animation of the beagle 2. The spacecraft itself will be entering Mars' atmosphere early on Christmas day. So, no, it hasn't landed yet and those movies are technically science fiction, as none of it has happened yet.
denoir 0 Posted December 24, 2003 How can we look at those samples if they are on mars!?!?!? The samples will be analyzed directly on Mars by beagle's instruments. The data from that analysis will then be sent to earth by radio waves.
redliner47 0 Posted December 24, 2003 this is a bit OT, but When do you think/not think we will land humans on mars? 5-10 years 10-15 years 20+ years
bonko the sane 2 Posted December 24, 2003 yeah, they have these little spectometers to analise the content of the samples...and personally i would first like to see man establish a permanent lab on our Moon, that will also serve as testing ground for equipment to be used on Mars...so i think Mars is still more than 20 years away

We're too busy killing eachother to bother with space technology right now. Unless the people of Earth adjust their attitude there will be no Moon/Mars landings in the next 20 years. Precisely what i said Yes. All we need is another Cold War inspired space race to get things going again. Perhaps China would like to give us American's a go at it this time? denoir 0 Posted December 25, 2003 No signal from Beagle The first attempt to contact the Beagle Mars probe has failed as the US Mars orbiter Odyssey failed to recieve the expected communication from the probe. The lead project scientist say it's no disaster as this was an expected possibility and that there will be plenty of more opportunities to contact it. In much better news, Beagle's mothership the European Space Agency's Mars Express successfuly completed a number of high-risk orbital burns and is now exactly in the desired positon. Mars Express carried the Beagle to Mars, but now they have separate missions. Although the Mars Express is more important, I really hope that the Beagle will make it. Mars Express is EU's first mission to Mars and the Beagle is Britain's probe to another planet (also constructed within the framework of ESA, but unlike the Mars Express it was built just by one European nation). blackdog~ 0 Posted December 25, 2003 That's a shame to hear, well... always look at the briiight side of life (as the brits always seem to say) - they didn't spend very much on it.
Phleep 0 Posted December 25, 2003 Naw. We're too busy killing eachother to bother with space technology right now. Unless the people of Earth adjust their attitude there will be no Moon/Mars landings in the next 20 years. China, the EU and US are all planning moon missions. China has solid plans, EU seems to be dabbling, and the US is looking that way again (can't find link).
Apollo 0 Posted December 26, 2003 I think China is about to spark a new Space race.Their continues efforts to expand on space technoligy and to graduatly fill the gap with US/EU/Russia will bring them up to par with Europe and U.S in space technoligy soon. When they have landed on the Moon you know it will take the Chinese only an x amount of time to land on Mars aswell ,and then there will be nations that will want to beat China to it. Blink Dog 0 Posted December 26, 2003 They should launch surplus nukes at Mars, if there is life there we would then be able to enslave martians for our own use, if not then we get one hell of a fireworks display.

Well ,most indicators show that Mars doesn't contain life ,at mawx some microorganisms maybe. But there are planets or moons in our solar system that has more chance of seeing life. Titan and Europe for ex. .Titan would have an atmosphere and ice ,And Europe has Ice over most of it's surface with ocean's under the ice. They are both moons of Jupiter though ,quite some distance to travel ,however AFAIK there is a mission ATM going to explore one of these moons extensivly for traces of life ,i think it's going for Titan.
