Northrop f-5e, beta 1

Recommended Posts

Very, very nice! smile_o.gif I really like a lot of the features, though flares/chaff might be really neat. The AI flies it pretty well too, though for humans the roll rate is somewhat high(maybe an AI flyable version, and a human flyable one?). Overall very good! smile_o.gif

Ok, after flying this jet, attacking shilkas, tanks, infantry, support konvois, getting attacked by AA-soldiers and many more:

I must say, this is one of the best aircrafts ever made for ofp!

So much fun to play with!

I can´t wait till the day it will go final with new textures, a new cockpit, a shadow and the other little things are missing.

This is, how a plane must be for ofp!

Thank you again for this great work!

P.S. Maybe you could get some help from a texture artist.

Hey guys, thanks for the feedback.

Lee_H._Oswald - I'll try your config changes and see how they go.

I play with mouse instead of joystick, and I did want it to be a bit sensitive to movement but alot of people say it is too much so I'll what I can do.

One - I wasnt going to worry about a desert camo one, I'm thinking either SEA (Vietnam) camo (like my F-111) or the camo like in the pic below. Dont know what type of camo this is,..Euro maybe... anyone help me here??

http://home.iprimus.com.au/dwright1/f5e1.jpg

Acidcrash - It's only Beta 1 at this stage, so there is only one resolution LOD, no solid geometry LOD, and a basic Fire geometry LOD.

Dont worry, I do know about that. It's also missing a shadow.

Ozanzac - With the complaints about handling I'll have to try changing it, I'll see how it goes, might have to settle for a compromise.

Although I do love what Footmunch has done with his multiple weapons and hidden selections, I'm going to stick with the proxies for now. I seriously hope OFP2 supports multi proxies for aircraft!

Good luck with your exams, I have one more to go and its tomorrow arvo, nice easy one!  wink_o.gif

Wonder - Sorry about the cockpit again, but I always fly 3rd person, so cockpits are never a priority (and cockpits are more about texturing than modeling.... evil texturing).

What do you mean about the high stall speed?

RavenDK - Sorry, no plans at this stage to make the top gun one. I Might do it at a later stage.

Thanks again to everyone, glad you like it!  smile_o.gif

The paint scheme in the picture is aggressor. That is the same paint scheme the USMC uses on their F-5's in Yuma AZ for their Weapons and Tactics Instruction School for our USMC Aircraft. They have a squadron of 12 f-5's out there...really sweet jet.

Hey, it's your pride and joy. tounge_o.gif I like the config to be honest. It really distingushes the aircraft from the A-10/Su-25 based configs out there.

Don't mind me, it's just my Falcon 4 talking, saying, make it hard for the pansies who have'nt played a real flight sim yet tounge_o.gif ...............Hell, a monkey could fly, bomb a target and then land an A-10 in this game! tounge_o.gifwink_o.gif . But I spose I'm a minority in this instance.

About exams, I just finished my last one then, so its off to schoolies as soon as this weeks over tounge_o.gif . Oh shit its gonna be fun. Chicks, booze and beach. It's gonna kick ass. Good luck with getin into Uni or Tafe or whatever. The hard part of educations over, but the wait for results begins. tounge_o.gif

dont include me in that lil statment. granted the closest to a real flight sim for me was F22 III , but i have one minor advantage over the flight sims

ive done it in real life biggrin_o.gif granted i flew an SNJ advanced WWII trainer for 30 minutes. it was one of the most thrilling experiances ever. and i can honestly say this. the WWIIEC:PD Corsair. does fly like the real thing. and i can now vouch for that biggrin_o.gif

Just for the record, I dont have any plans to make aggressor textures, I'd rather make textures that represent combat aircraft, not training aircraft.

I'll have to check out a few more pics before I decide what exactly I'll use.

coporal_punishment - That book sounds pretty good, if you are able to scan in a few of the more common paint schemes (not aggressor ones) that would be great. Or just describe them to me and I'll see how I go.

Consigliere - I'm not much of a true flight sim player. I fly 3rd person cause I love to look at the planes! biggrin_o.gif Whats the point in flying all these cool looking aircraft if all you get to see is a small portion from the inside!! wink_o.gifsmile_o.gif

Lee_H._Oswald - Man thats a nice pic! I havent tried your config suggestion yet, will give it a go tomorrow.

ozanzac - I think I'm one of those pansies, after all, I fly 3rd person......and use mouse instead of joystick!! biggrin_o.gif

BTW, I'm already at uni, and I've already done TAFE. My education has finished, started, finished, and started again! Just completed first year Uni, and I'm doing better than I thought I'd do. I guess I'm a sucker for educational torture!

Now a question to everyone.

There has been alot of people comment that it is too sensitive left/right movement.

Do all these people use joystick or are there mouse users out there that think it is too sensitive too?

I personally thought it was slightly too sensitive but didn't think much of it, after all, as people have said it is supposed to be a highly manuverable plane.

Any mouse users out there that think it is too sensitive then please let me know. I just need to clarify if it is a joystick only problem, or if mouse users think it is too harsh as well.

Thanks all!

I'm a Flight sim enthusiast and have 7 hours flying time in a Grob Tutor Mk.2 including aeros.I use my Sidewinder Precision Pro II joystick, and from experience, I'd say that the handling is probably what could be expected from a nimble little aircraft like the Freedom Fighter smile_o.gif

I always played ofp aircrafts with mouse/keyboard, cause it´s very easy.

But now I have a very good joystick and I can say:

I have missed a lot!

It´s is so much fun flying in ofp with a stick.

Also with choppers it´s great, but not so easy.

---

The sensitivity thing isn´t a joystick or mouse problem. It´s just the way how it works.

Flying with mouse means: The plane follows the mouse cursor. If you don´t touch the mouse, the plane goes straight alone.

With a stick you have to steer complete by yourself, so a too high sensitifity makes it close to impossible to get the plane back flying straight after a hard turn.

i think we can work out a comprimise here. most of us use a joystick to fly planes (i use a mouse for helos and joy for planes). config it to the joystick users. and put an extra config in the zip file telling users "if you use a mouse, de-pbo the addons and replace the config with this one" that way we can have a choice, and everyones happy smile_o.gif

No way buddy make the default config for Mouse users , majority have mouse we dont use 'JOY'sticks to play OFP.

How would you know?

It makes sense flying with a joystick...You wouldn't use a joystick to control your player (if it was possible, obviously) would you wink_o.gif

Like Lee already said: For mouse users it doesn't matter very much how the config is set

My personal tip: If you're using a mouse to fly, also use the keyboard, e.g. "Q" and "Y" during turns to get a better manoevrability

But joystick-users play because they want to sense the flight feeling, so why not to config it realistic for joysticks?

It's really sad if you have a joystick, but can't fly any plane with it... sad_o.gif

Amen! All I do is fly in OFP...mostly helicopters, but with jets, I like the feeling of hauling ass over the enemy and dropping some cluster bombs or napam and heading back to base.

When ever I get a chance in a game to fly helo's or planes I choose that over the ground warfare...I am a big supporter of good close airsupport and I couldn't half as good as I do with out my thrustmaster joystick. Makes it real easy to fly at 20 feet off the deck going 140 knots in a blackhawk for a troop insertion.......

Wow went all Marine Corps on this post...sorry guys...love my job WAY to much..

Skaircro -

It does seem a bit too quick to roll (ie aileronsensitivity), but

the nose up/down is pretty much okay. If you haven't got

a joystick, I'm sure there are people willing to beta test

any changes...

I guess I'll have to do a v1.1 F-5A to keep up. wink_o.gif

Man what missile is that i dont have it on my planes?  sad_o.gif  rock.gif

Ace, you crack me up tounge_o.gif .

Thats a Mk82 SE retarded bomb.

Toggle through all the weapons selections on the Mk82SE F-5, and it should be there somewhere.

The bombs have two modes, a slick mode and a retarded mode.

Hope you find it smile_o.gifwink_o.gif .

For Cutscene Purposes, is there a way I can get the AI to fly the F5 and drop the Slow retarded bombs over a target. Is it the Do Fire command??

Any help appreciated, love the plane, especially for Vietnam CAS.

Nexus6

Lee_H._Oswald - I tried your config changes and I think it is way too sluggish on mouse. I'll do a bit of experimenting.

Footmunch - Let the competition begin..... but seriously, I think the masses would have my head if I took you away from your work with the F-4 Phantom!!  wink_o.gif  biggrin_o.gif

Nexus6 - the best thing you could do for cutscenes is to use the camcreate command and setvelocity command to make it look like the bombs were dropped. The AI isn't very effective when using these bombs. They only drop one at a time, it is rarely on target, and I dont know how to specify to the AI to use them in retarded mode.

I forgot to include a list of ammo/weapon class names etc in the rar so I'll bung up a quick list. Available below.

F-5 class names and stuff

Ok everyone this is what I'm thinking, I'll try some changes to make it a bit more stable but still maneuverable and next version I'll make two separate addons, one configured for mouse and one for joystick, that way you can just download the one you would prefer.

I've only got a very old and shitty MS joystick at my disposal so before I release it I will take Footmunch's suggestion and get some joystick users to give it a pre-test.

I don't know when this new version will be available because I'm making a small prop driven plane as well at the moment and would like to get a beta out for it asap.
