that is some pretty neat stuff.  it'd make SAMs obsolete.

It'd make TANKS obsolete! wow_o.gifsad_o.gif

This is clearly the place to ask this question.  smile_o.gif

I've always wondered what these bits are for:

m1a1.jpg

Anyone here care to enlighten me, as my knowledge of tanks is quite limited. Counter-measures? Decoration? Small metallic hedgehogs?

Sorry, too lazy to look it up myself.   wink_o.gif

Those smoke screens have 2 purposes i think.

1. block the view with for the human eye, so you cant aim very well with that RPG-9

2. the smoke screen would block or at least interfere the laser of laser-guided weaponry.

Thanks, but perhaps I should have clearer in my questioning. smile_o.gif I understand the purpose of a smoke screen, but are the pods ever loaded with things other than smoke grenades? i.e standard grenades, other types of grenades etc etc smile_o.gif

the french Leclerc has a Gallix defence system which can fire smoke grenades , antipersonnal charges and IR flares

but i don't know about the other MBT's , i think they can only fire smoke pots

and about the 140mm gun on the M1a3 , if i remember well it's a joint project between the USA , Britain , Germany and France which will replace 120mm guns on these countries' MBT's

Quote[/b] ]ACTIVE PROTECTION: The Type 98 features an JD-3 integrated laser rangefinder/warning/self-defence device. Unlike contemporary Russian active tank self-defense systems like Drozd, Drozd-2, and Arena, which launch projectiles to disable or "shoot-down" incoming anti-tank missiles and projectiles, the Chinese system apparently uses a high-powered laser to directly attack the enemy weapon's optics and gunner.

i dont know about you but i dont see any lasers on that tank

is it possible the commanders have it attached to their head? biggrin_o.gif

JD-3 roof-mounted active laser self-defence weapon (front) and laser warning receiver (back)

I can't show you the picture, when I right click, it gives me some stupid window other than the one I want.

If I remember right, just smoke gernades only. Also, if the M1 Abrams series tanks, run out of smoke gernades, they can produce there own type of smoke, via the turbine engine.

It sprays oil onto the exhaust(which is 1500 F) and it produces smoke.

standard grenades don´t make much sense cause the device is hardly controlable and the launch tubes are not adjustable from within tank.

You can think of AP mine deploying but you know that we wont do that.

it's the french gallix , as i said earlier , it can fire certain variety of ammo , i don't think it's reloadable from the inside

nothing , but before you reach the tank you generally have to make your way through some infantry squads

And I doubt it'd just be sitting still. Probably moving around, turning the turret around. And you're in the middle of a battle. Not the best place for a party. smile_o.gif

simple...

keep the turret rotating at high speeds, accelerate forward and break hard when reaching 50 km/h. smile_o.gif

if that doesn't work.. then it appears the person on top of the tank is a damn Rodeo professional. rock.gif

Well not quite...It is diesel that is injected into the turbine exaust which burns the diesel and creates a lot of white smoke (this is how aerobatic teams make their smoke trails) smile_o.gif

I've been told that it burns oil.But it could be wrong info I guess.

But I would think, if you've seen a car having black smoke coming out of the exhaust, thats because its burning oil,(which is bad to unleaded fuel cars), which I would think is the same concept.

You are both right.. Diesel is oil.

That seems to be a standard feature in most American AFVs now. The new Marine AAAV can pull the same diesel-exhaust smoke screen trick as well.
