Opscifi  release - tau forces

Operation Sci-Fi just released a STUNNING new pack of addon betas that really push the boundaris of OFP.

Ok, everyone knows that normally I really dislike cheezy sci-fi addons and prefer realistic military addons... but for this pack I will make an exception. It is simply incredible. The stealth units for example look like the Predator when he's invisible. In addition they discovered how to make WALKING mechs which are basically soldiers that are twice as tall and are refered to as battle suits.

I always thought that it was impossible to resize soldiers but apparently it's not. So does that mean you can make them smaller? In my opinin this is a big innovation for the OFP addon making community.

Anyways, the pack has its bugs (some units don't have weapons for example) but it's a really fun pack and nice change of pace. Mix this with other Sci-Fi addons (like the Tie fighters and the drop ship that just came out) and you can have a marvelous time making Sci Fi missions.

Oh yeah... the addon can be downloaded at:

http://scifi.the-spectrum.org/cgi-bin/pbb_forum.pl?topic=1757

Also make sure to read the info as you need the password to open up the files. But for those who don't read the password is: don't copy me

Don't ask why they put a password on it... just an unnecessary inconvenience to the player. But it's worth the minor annoyance.

Hoa! This seems to be cool stuff. I like more or less everything connected to science fiction. Must test it. And working mechs and stealth. Cool. Downloading now

I have tested it now and I am impressed. The stealth units are awsome.

But there are a lot of bugs. But I think that they can handle them in the next version. It's mostly missing weapons. One thing is that the driver in the vehicles can't chance to manual fire. The tank for example has a "locked" turret so it only can shoot forward. Maybe it would be better if it could turn a bit.

They should also make the mechs stand only. It looks silly when the go prone.

But I like the pack and I think it will be perfect with some minor changes.

The prone position problem is easy to fix in the mission editor. Simply put this in the unit's init line:

this setunitpos "up";

The stealth unit should also have very low detectibility.

I also agree on the warhammer assault ship. It definitely needs a moving turret. Also on the APC the turret is kinda messed up as it moves outside of the main body of the vehicle which looks wierd. You can also shoot through them and so they are next to impossible to destroy, so that DEFINITELY needs to be fixed. But I like the inside cargo area and they looks SOOOOOOO cool speeding across the landscape with that trail of dust behind them.

Now if only someone could make a descent drop ship like the big ones used in the Mech Warriors series of games. Hopefully mods like this will show BIS the possibilities of linking the OFP game engine, to a seperate "space" game engine where you can travel to different worlds and have battles in space (as well as board ships and conduct planetary assaults and planetary bombardments).

So far NOBODY has done that yet. Maybe BIS might think about that after OFP2.

I hope that they either do that or that they make a good hand to hand combat engine and make historical simulations like of the American Civil War, Nepoleonic Wars, Roman Empire campaigns, or the Crusades.

At any rate, I think that this Sci-Fi mod is definitely a very cool addon. The only thing that sucks is that they have no enemies to fight against accept the Russians. sad_o.gif

However I just tried the Colonial Marines addon and made put them on the East side (by giving them an East leader). They actually stood up fairly well against these aliens. smile_o.gif

I hope more "mech" addon makers will use this system of making mechs instead of the ones that just slide around and don't walk. I know you can't get in and out of the mechs that way, but at least the AI use them realistically plus the players can always operate other types of futuristic weapons, tanks, and fighter aircraft.

Thanks, I was looking for that.

And by the way Teg: This in only a part of the Sci-Fi mod. They are working on Imperial Marines and other things. I hope they will release them soon. And I also hope they will give us their X-Wing pack (from the Star Wars part of the mod team) so we can have dogfights with them and their previously released Tie Fighters.
