Xm8 to replace m16?

Recommended Posts

xm8draw.jpg

Quote[/b] ]The XM8 will be quite similar to the "KE" (kinetic energy) part of the XM-29 OICW system, being different mostly in having a telescoped plastic buttstock of adjustable length, and a detachable carrying handle with the Picatinny rail.

The XM8 is a derivative of the Heckler-Koch G36 assault rifle, and thus it is almost similar to that rifle in design and functioning. The key differences are the NATO-standard magazine housing that will accept M16-type magazines, the set of Picatinny rails on the forend, telescoped buttstock of adjustable length and a different scope, mounted on the Picatinny rail, built into the detachable carrying handle.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

The U.S. military won't be replacing the M-16 family anytime soon. Now that they have the A3 and A4 series, the M-16/M4 family may last another 15-20 years in service.

We can have it before the US.

All we have to do is click our heals together 3 times and say "There's no addon maker like Inquisitor". tounge_o.gif

world.guns.ru says it will enter production in 2005. I think some soldiers relly would look forward to that gun. it's about 20% lighter than the currebt M4. wink_o.gif

Looks a hell of a lot like an HK G36 to me.

Never heard of an XM-8.

Most of the Army's 1st Tier units have fully converted to the M4, while the USMC reluctantly clings to the M-16, as they did in the 60's with the M-14. Last I heard the OICW was undergoing some redesign, designated the M-29 and is currently slated for distrubtion to line units later in this decade.

just klick with your mouse on the picture for further information. It's the kinetic energy part of the OICW. and as we all know it's based on the G36. smile_o.gif

Reluctantly?  The M16A4 had fewer stoppages in the A4-M4 head-to-head evaluation.  (Not that I understand why, as the internals are the same.)  In any case the USMC units that need a compact weapon (e.g. Force, SRT's, Security Force CQB teams) already use the M4.

Not in my experience, and most troops I know will agree with me. The internals are not exact, it's not advised to put a M4 bolt in an M-16 of vice versa. There are some minute differences supposedly, that or my armorer is full of crap. No love for the A2/4, sorry, I'm not a huge guy, and I find the M4 more comfortable.

Sorry, missed that in the text, merely making an observation...question...why not just use the G36? It's already blueprinted and HK could easily tool it's US division to make them....I haven't gotten to shoot a G36 but I'd sure like to try it out. Sure, there is the SL8-1, but it's completely different except for the action. Thank you Sen. Diane Feinstein. ::middle finger::

G36 :

no piccinaty (sp?) rail

not US made

non-modulable/changeable sights

impossible to put to sop-mod standard as it is right now

The G36 compact has a 1913 picatinny (Weaver) rail.

Our currently issued side arm was not originally US made.

None of our light machine guns are US design, but are made in the U.S. since FN is now a subsidiary of Browning.

Hey I'll say it, Europeans make better guns, the end.

I'm sure you can swap out a longer barrel on that thing. I don't know it it would accomodate an M203 though. Hey, let me dream. sad_o.gif

I don't think the U.S. making a multi-billion dollar French weapons contract would go over too well right now. crazy_o.gif

yeah better get back on topic

so , about the M8 , will it be able to take ALL of the sop-mod addons ? i'd say yes

and why change from a proven design the M4 is to the M8 ?

ok , it could be used for standardisation meens , the OICW M29 being reserved to first line units and the M8 to second line ones

The M203 will probably be replaced with the HK AGL (AG36) anway, and since it's made for the G36 in the first place, it should fit the XM8 without modifications.

From what I know about the A2/3/4 vs. M4 issue is that men in combat units will get the M4A1 while everyone else will retain their A2's. I don't see why everyone needs an M4, I mean shit, how often does a helicopter mechanic use his personal weapon? (unless he's in a FARP). He most likely won't have to go CQB anyway so it's not like it matters all that much.

Quote[/b] ]as they did in the 60's with the M-14.

I heard alot Force Recon and SEALs still have a liking for the M14 or the Springfield M1A.(Their the same, just ones made for Civ. Purposes.)

Indeed my jarheaded friend. The M-14 is a masterpiece battle rifle. Everything that was wrong with the Garand was fixed in the M-14. The cocking lever was machined too thin and prone to breakage, a detatchable magazine..etc.. If I was fighting in the boonies it would definitely be my weapon of choice. Arguably, an accurized Springfield M1A is among the most accurate Semi-auto centerfire rifles in the world. Definitely one among the next few that will be added to my personal collection. You will still see M-21/25 sniper systems fielded in the U.S. military today. In fact, most spotters now carry M1A scout version rifles to suppliment the sniper's M-24.

I do believe Garands and M14s tend to be accurate anyway.

You just can't beat range, lethality, reliability, and accuracy.

reliable rifle, and a reliable round. 7.62 x 51 may not have the flatest trajectory or the most energy on target, espeically with the emergence of the belted magnum calibers, however, it is consistant, and still my favorite to shoot with.
