Badgerboy 0 Posted June 16, 2003 Without a new motherboard, the Barton would pretty much be wasted on it, even if it does support it. You can't go wrong with a Throughbred B, so I would aim for one of those. As motherboards go, you can pick them up for around Å80, with all the trimmings. (LAN, Surround sounds etc). People seem to think they are really expensive, but a good board can give you a big boost. Regarding your DDR, is it mixed, or the same brand? What CAS timings are you running in the BIOS? joltan 0 Posted June 16, 2003 Sure, why pay 180€ for a Barton and add another 80 for the mobo, when I can get a good CPU for just 100€? ;) Thanks for the help. I'll be getting a new machine next year anyways, so I don't plan to sink too much money into this old one. Better a cheap cpu that runs fine with the stuff I already got than buying an more expensive cpu that only has any advantages if I pay an extra 80€ for a new mobo (and maybe even new ram). My ram are two identical 512MB Infineon ddr266 rams. I don't remember what timings I set it to, but it was the fastest setting for my board. Of course a Nforce chipset would be better with two modules, but as I said above, I just want a cheap and effective upgrade - not a complete system optimization. Despite it's age of nearly two years the system is running fast and stable - and that's the way I want to keep it. It's just a bit too slow to get the most out of the GF4Ti I bought a few months ago. FallenPaladin 0 Posted June 16, 2003 The prices for processors are falling right now, aren`t they? I`m looking forward to get a 3000Mhz machine next year!

Warin 0 Posted June 18, 2003 I just bumped to a Barton 2500+, because a friend needed a system almsot immediately. SO I sold them my old stuff and got new stuff. I did want to wait for Athlon 64, though. I think it will be totalyl worth it. You know, I understood overclocking back in the day when a P90 was easily upgraded to a P120 and saved a couple hundred dollars. But these days the processors are so fast to start with, there really is little need for OCing. It's one of those things you do if you just have to tweak things out and try to push it. I'd rather have stability and a cool rig than going nuts with 150-200 dollars in gear for OCing a processor when I could just by the faster processor for less than that But that's just my opinion. joltan 0 Posted June 18, 2003 Next year it will be 64bit! Is that worth waiting for? I think with a little update (switching my AthlonXP1700+ to a 2600+) my machine will be quite good for almost anything I throw at it until the 64bit processors are out - and maybe even until OFP2 comes out and I really have a good reason to update. And if such a small update can prolong the machine's lifetime by 50%, then it's definitely worth it!
