BronzeEagle 2 Posted June 12, 2003 It's once been said that energy never stops it keeps moving. Well the nations are having a hell of a time moving nuclear energy. It's used for nothing and it lasts ages. It's very powerful yet noone has been able to figure out how to use it for good but only for destruction. If we needed nuclear power then maybe we'd run into an instance where nuclear missiled had to be dismantled just to get at that energy. If it were like gold only. If the price were too high then noone would have nukes. If it were so needed that every missile had to be dismantled and the nuclear power had to be used for something good then we'd be in business. Noone in military history has ever validated killing massive amounts of human while destroying resources. It's not a matter of who's going to pull the trigger first, its a matter of how we get this stuff moving. It's time to really usher in a new age. I believe the nuclear age is coming. It's going to be used to power everything. It's going to be like fire was to the early humans. Yeah it was dangerous but we worked around it. Maybe nuclear energy only has one purpose. Maybe its sole purpose is that it was given to us to ....psh I don't know. What can it do? It can power stuff for a long time. Well lets say that all the utilities run off of one nuclear core for an entire city? Well in that case how much do I have to pay? Let's face the facts. We're at an energy crisis and we have a new energy that does the trick and people are dying because noone wants to implement it. President Bush has invested in it. I'm glad for that. I'm even more thankful for nuclear energy because I know it can give people less bills to pay. Maybe a cheaper way of life so that things like 40 man team vs. team games will be the next big thing. New communication speeds for computers that whoop what we have now, etc. What if nuclear energy could give us all that in some chain of events? Awww man!! Nuclear toaster oven leads to idea for cheaper and faster internet speeds amongst common people. What if it lead to faster processors amongst the main internet backbone companies? It's power ain't it?

Jinef 2 Posted June 12, 2003 Nuclear energy is not the answer, when nuclear power became well known it was seen as an answer to the energy problem, it's not. It is not renewable so although it seems more efficient than fossil fuels it's still going to run out, it produces nuclear waste. Nuclear waste is not nice and nobody wants it. Bush is an idiot, he has no capability of thinking on the long term scale and all his initiatives will only benefit the people for a very short time, the executives for a bit longer and the planet...well none of is initiatives benefit the planet at all, he is an enviromental disaster. You sound like you are living in the 80s m8, if you remember people thought it was the golden solution...*boom* oops there goes Chernobyl. I can't believe you actually think this. We need renewable energy sources! Why don't people understand (well apart from the Swiss) this concept.
Jinef 2 Posted June 12, 2003 You think on a very small scale, one hydroelectric dam can provide hundreds of thousands of MWs, enough to keep your PC going for a very long time.

Yes, China has the right idea. Build huge dams, get rid of it's dirty coal plants. Happy I'm not one of the 1.3 million people that has to move. -=Die Alive=-

Germany has made a good start with it's policy to shut down all nuclear power plants in Germany within the next 20-30 years.. there are already a lot of wind power plants in my region. Nah.... Imho he looks like the guy in your avantar! Anyway... There's alot of people in sweden that wants to get rid of the nuclear powerplants and use wind power. But then they realize that these things need alot of space. And refuse to put these things anywhere close to their homes... So there's no where we can fit enough of them :-/
Balschoiw 0 Posted June 12, 2003 Always wanted to have a thing like that. Ride in the city, ask some chicks to join for a ride and then let them guess where to take a seat    Edit : I assume this is why the guy is smiling that way. "NUKE THE WHALES !"  legal disclaimer: this quote has been taken from the infamous film "Waterworld" with and from Kevin Forgettherest. Dennis Hopper drove a Cadillac Cabriolet on his personal supertanker and on the boot there was a sticker saying exactly what is quoted above. I kinda liked that slogan and thought about making a sticker for my tank, but well you know there are always some activists in the trees and you dont know what they will be throwing at you
FSPilot 0 Posted June 12, 2003 I remember seeing somewhere that a can of beer is more radioactive than cooling water used at nuclear plants. Â Don't quite see how that works, but it's a little relevant. Anyway, I don't see a new energy source as a solution to the energy problem. Â Solar power and wind power don't produce much anyway. Â I see cutting down on energy consumption as the solution. Â We should invest more in hydrogen cars and cutting down on how much energy we use. Then soon we'll be running out of hydrogen. Â edit - quick question for the earth-saavy out there. trees absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, right? cars also expel (among other things) carbon dioxide in their exhaust, right? so what's the problem? Why dont trees just absorb all the carbon dioxide and give us more air?
SpeedyDonkey 0 Posted June 12, 2003 What a coincidence. I didn't think of it first but i was actually at a nuclear power plant (Forsmark - North of Stockholm) a week ago. If there's anything you want to know, feel free to ask me

so what's the problem?  Why dont trees just absorb all the carbon dioxide and give us more air? First off, if we run out of hypdrogen, the atmosphere is fucked! By then we shall have developed fusion, and then we will be sorted for the forseeable future. As for your tree thing, cars pump out more than just C02, there are many other dangerous fumes in car exhausts. Oh, and how the hell are we supposed to let the trees convert CO2 to oxygen when we are cutting down acres of it everyday? We need to cut down on C02 emissions (Kyoto) , and stop cutting down tree's. (Reminds me of Bush's 'Healthy forest plan' . I hope they never went through with that, it was rediculous.
Tex -USMC- 0 Posted June 12, 2003 It isn't the cooling water that's the problem, FS. It's the spent fuel rods and assorted byproducts of the fission process that are why nuclear power is such a bitch to keep up.
FSPilot 0 Posted June 12, 2003 That's another thing I don't understand about spent fuel rods. Why don't they just keep using them until they're safely radioactive, then use them for other purposes? Like cutting down trees. ;)

-TU--33ker 0 Posted June 12, 2003 Then soon we'll be running out of hydrogen. Â I don't think we can really run out of hydrogen. If our planet has plenty of something, then it's hydrogen! It's not only in the air, it's also the main part of water.
