Bah, I guess I'll have to upgrade my current connection.

But once you get past a certain bandwidth it shouldn't make a difference no?

I am very disappointed. I thought that there would be real improvements. I'm on a 100 MBit line that's connected directly to a 1,6 TBit fiber optic base network. So it's quite pathetic that the world speed record is only a factor ten larger then regular internet connections in Sweden that anybody can get. confused.gif

Veru interesting, but my problem is not so much in speed, as limit. I have a cable connection that goes fast enough (I'll get over 500kb a second download from a good server) but I have limit on how much I can download. Before the start of this month we had a good system, you can download basically as much as you want, as long as you don't download too much more than everyone else. Now each user is given a 3gb download limit per month unless you pay lots and lots of money. And of that 3gig, only 1gig in mine so now I have to be quite careful what i download. If its over a couple of meg, its got to be good to warrant a download. Been a OFP fan, that means I will have to be more careful what add-ons I download. Oh well, better than nothing smile.gif

It will be cool when technology like in the forementioned article is avaliable widely. In Australia for example, Cable internet is only avaliable in major cities and then, only in certain areas of those cities.

which is just not right...us in the UK pay Å20-Å25 for 512kbs/256kbs

granted both BB companys are pathetic and dont know x-over from a straight-through (BT and NTL) and as a consequence cant offer an internet service worth a damn

Not everybody wants to have their internet experience government-funded, Denoir.

It's not, unfortunately. It's all privatized so there are 500 different ISPs with different quality of service. Basically, if you happen to live in the right place you can get a good connection very cheap while if you don't you can end up paying a lot for rubbish.

There is one thing that is worse then government monpoly and that's private monopoly.

I think that the internet should be viewed as an infrastructure equivalent to phone lines and roads and should be government regulated to some extent.

Fair enough. I guess the prices stay so low because the market is small, competition is high, and setting up infrastructure is cheap? I know you can't find the same kind of setup in America for twice that amount.

one sentence: faster porn dowloading

i mean

better OFP MP. wink.gif

speaking of pigeons, some ppl actually tried it out. they used pigeos to send messages just lik einternet protocols(for fun), and ended up with some really slow connection. IIRC, there is a RFC on it.

it's not a big step forward, but considering the distance, it's getting better. small steps at a time, ppl smile.gif

And there is a big demand for it. We have the second largest internet connection density in the world. (Finland is the most internet-dense country).

What I am really looking forward now is 3G that is getting introduced. GPRS is fine but 2 Mbit is much better smile.gif I only hope that the prices won't go up. I use GPRS extensivly on my ipaq (via blutooth to my ericsson t68i). The price is 1,5 € /Mb. It might sound like much but you don't have any need to download any larger files and the data stream is highly comprsed. For regular web-browsing, emailing and ICQing it's really nothing. I use it every day and still don't even reach one MB/month.

GPRS bites the big one smile.gif It's severely bandwidth limited, especially when you are in a densely populated area with a large number of users.

I am running a 1XRTT connection right now (almost 3G) and it's 2-3 times faster than GPRS. We should have 1XRTT EV-DO later this year, which will spool up to 2mbps if you dont needed to be handed off between cells, and that is going to be phenomenal. I am holding out on buying a PDA with cell integrated until EV-DO is available.

Are any of the european carriers actually looking at a switch to WCDMA? Last I heard they were trying to massage GSM to extend data speeds (EDGE? )to avoid having to do a massive infrastructure switchover.

Since the hotel I'm billeted in has the worst phone lines in the world, I'm enjoying a hyper connection of 26.4. Yeeeeah!

It's all up hill from here for me. biggrin.gif

I'm actually very pleased with it. It's a 100kbit permanent connection which is combined with extensive data compression more then enough for regular web browsing. The limitation that is most annoying to me is the small ipaq screen (320x240 standard). You can boost that to 800x600 but the characters are then too small to be readable.

The infrastructure is being built as we speak. This summer all the larger cities will have 3G. I've heard that its already available in several cities in Germany and some in England.

Indeed, they do like to brag. Nowhere near as much as the Americans of course but sometimes those Norwegians and especially the Finns!

Not that i hold any prejudices whatsoever!

Yes...but that badwidth is shared with all of the other users on the network in your particular cell. biggrin.gif Which isnt bad if there arent any other users on at the same time. But get 5 or 6 people trying to use the same cell site and suddenly you're at 20kbps.
