yeah, I hear ya. I'm all about the outdoors during the summer time: fishing, camping, destroying shit, all the things American kids have forgotten about. I used to be a Boy Scout, but I decided that I wasn't interested in be getting too many of the more boring merit badges, and being the oldest Tenderfoot in the troop didnt sound too great either biggrin.gif

I don't know about that. I had the advantage/disadvantage? of spending half my childhood living in the city and the other half in the country. Even in the city, there was plenty to do. We used to go down to the city park and play baseball or football until it got too dark to see. In the summer we went swimming at the community center pool. Hell, we even played in the street. Tag, Hide and Go Seek, sledding down a street when it iced over in the winter. Kids are pretty imaginative, make them go outside and they'll come up with something. I rode my bike everywhere when I was a kid. I used to clim up on top of buildings and yell things down at people passing below. All this outdoor activity had one good result, it kept us in shape. There weren't a lot of fat-assed kids in my generation. Our parents didn't let us sit and watch MTV (and this was back when it was all videos all the time with no commercials.) We were allowed to play video games (Atari, Coleco Vision LOL!!wink.gif about once or twice a week, otherwise it was get your asses outside and play, then come home for dinner and do your homework. MTV is pure shit and it corrupts our culture tremendously, but the fault lies with today's lazy, self-oriented, me first, materialistic, apathetic parents. Parents want to be their kid's buddies today, instead of being the parents they are supposed to be. You should have to get licensed to become a parent these days.

I too hate MTV. Everyone here watches it and I feel like an outsider when they're talking about all these god damn shows I've never heard of. I always wondered why MTV was always playing things unrelated to music. And MTV2 never really caught my eye with the crap they played. It's really sad to see the younger kids growing up with MTV. 8 year old girls aren't supposed to dress like sluts! crazy.gif

So true. These new age parents, or whatever the hell they are, have a few screws missing.

I would have to disagree with that. But ok, some of the stuff on there vurges on X rated, but thats not the point. Those truth about sex programs have been shown as primetime specials many times over when they first came out. People are so quick to say MTV pushes this image on people, which is true, no doubt about it, but they also realize the power they have. The truth is, MTV's president is over 50, and most of its exec or mid 30's - 40's. If you watched MTV on a semi-regular basis you would see the MANY safe sex ads they run. I mean, they literally have alot of them. They don't just say "where a condom", they do alot to get the point across. As i said, they know they have the power, and most of the brains over there are using it in the right way. Its just, as far as regular programming goes, yea they do push that "image" across a little too much. But they know how to bring good messages across, and they do. Just remember this, i am NOT a bubblegum chewer that falls into the MTV void, i can't stand most of the crap on there, its just i see when they do good, and respect that.

well, MTV may talk the talk, but they certainly don't back it up.

On an entirely unrelated note, I'm going through some old albums (Credence Clearwater, etc.) and I realize that the music today really sucks crazy.gif which is probably the strongest reason that we need a protracted conflict in Asia: makes for good tunes tounge.gif

as for the music im sure anyone on a good pc with good software and a bit of talent could make as good or better than most of mtv crap which leads me to another question how come there isnt any electronic-synthesizer music that has the complexity of classical music ?

uhh.....well, probably because its 2003 and not 1986 biggrin.gif And considering the amount of crap that came out of hte 80's, that is a good thing.

After seeing all the anti-MTV replies, I don't think that there's a whole lot to be concerned about. Everyone here seems to think about the 'unknown dumb majority' but they fail to realise that they have alot in common with alot of people that don't post here. That's understandable though, we can't read people's minds,...........yet. tounge.gif

Yes, there are crass, materialistic, and shallow people out there, but I don't think that they are as numerous as we like to think.

Or maybe MTV and things like it really do represent the downfall of western civilisation. Who knows?

I will agree with you guys on a number of thing's though.

Young kids today do dress like they are going to apear in a GAP commercial, or a rap video, and young girl's clothes are getting more and more revealing. When I was that age, jogging pants were all the rage and there was only a couple of fat people at our school.

We I was young, me and my buddies would hike about 4k to go out to the back 40 and play soldiers with our paintballguns and playdough 'C4'. Today, there are video games for that, which is unfortunate.

Parents should tell their kids what their 'culture' is all about. Change the myth, and the values will follow.

Oh yeah, MTV sucks anyway, Much Music actually plays music, but even that is getting too 'poppy' nowadays. I miss the mid '90's when they played good 'ol Canadian rock.

LOL, so true. Why do I always think of doing helo inserts when I hear CCR? tounge.gif

BTW, Undergrads is a good show Tovarish, ever see 'Mission Hill'?

Nah, only seen about 5 episodes. Got hooked on it while drinking at a buddy's house one day. Saw the episode where Gimpy had to win a Quake game and he was training his friends in the use of a joystick

"As I was saying, your joystick...is there something funny about your joystick Private Rocco? You must master your joystick as a fisherman masters bait!" biggrin.gif

After that I downloaded a few episodes. I'll look for that one.

Mission Hill and Undergrads are both pretty good. You can see them both late night on Teletoon (for you Canadians out there biggrin.gif)

They each have their own advantages and humour. Of course, if you want something over the top rude:

Quads

Hmm, for me I never found Quads all that funny.

The holy trinity of TV cartoons for me (excepting the Simpsons, which is a given) is The Family Guy, Futurama, and Duckman

Anyway, back to MTV, I just got access to it through my cable provider about 2 months ago (it didn't cost any extra).

Every time I turn it on there is some BS show on instead of music! The only shows I like on MTV are Jackass, Beavis & Butthead and the Andy dick show. But I find it really annoying that when I just wanna sit back and chill to some music, there is some pubescent idiot yammering at me instead of a filmclip.

Even when the music does come on it's usually the same sound alike "R&B" (I remember when R&B used to mean good soulful Rythm and Blues, not some bunch of half naked black or hispanic girls singing about how hot they are or guys telling us what badass gangtas they think they are).  confused.gif Thankfully my cable has 2 other, local music channels, which are marginally better.

In our house, we don't subscribe to anything. That leaves us with Israeli's government channel 1 and public channel 2. Extremely boring and demented content 95% of the time.

Keeps the kids busy with other things, though I have to put some limits on the amount of time my oldest boy plays OFP. I tell him to look at his father as an example. tounge.gifbiggrin.gifsmile.gifwink.gifconfused.gifsad.gif

I like MTV, i like it a lot, there's different kinds of shows and lots of nice music.

Dunno what's so bad about this program, everyone just watches it to see those idiots acting like... well... idiots smile.gif

It's just entertainment, calm down, ppl who take these shows for serious probable think that the young people these days are dumb enough to do anything they see on TV.

Sheesh...

we have lots of shows produced in USA over here on german MTV.

the best so far are Jackass (i always wonder how dumb people can be but it's still fun to watch how they beat the shit out of themselves tounge.gif ), The Osbournes (please shoot ozzy's dumb kids, they ruin the whole show!wink.gif, and yes Celebrity Deathmatch was also quite funny... untill they made a german voice-over for it. crazy.gif

we also have MTY2 over here but it's even worse than MTV because it's only about techno and pop.

that's why i prefer the german rival channel Viva. although it also shows mainly corny pop music, it sometimes has some highlights like a Manowar live show. biggrin.gif

Viva+, another channel, sometimes shows Foo Fighters or Queens Of The Stone Age live gigs.

and the show metal video clips in the evenings regulary. smile.gif
